Function of Protein

Experiments were done to study the factors that affect the function of protein molecule.
Insulin hormone that is secreted by the beta
cells in the Islets of Langerhans in the
pancreas in case of hyperglycemia was used
in this experiment.
Diabetic animals were subjected to the
injections of pro-insulin and insulin shown in
Pro-insulin Insulin
document 1.

insulin.
2. Compare the polypeptide chains in pro-insulin Injection of pro-insulin Hyperglycemia
and insulin. Injection of insulin Normal glycemia
3. Analyze the results in document 2.
4. Conclude the active and inactive insulin. Document 2
5. Conclude the factor that influence the function of protein molecule.

Correction

1. Insulin hormone is secreted by the beta cells in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.
2. The polypeptide chain in pro-insulin is made up of chains A, B and C while in insulin is made
up of only chains A and B.
3. Hyperglycemia appeared after injection of pro-insulin to diabetic animals while normal
glycemia detected after injection of insulin.
4. Therefore, pro-insulin is the inactive and insulin is the active hormone.
5. Therefore, any defect in the sequence of amin acids will affect the function of protein.
