One Tablet per student (or a class television)

Observe, describe, and predict patterns of the sun, moon, and stars as they appear in the sky (e.g.,
sun and moon appearing to rise in one part of the sky, move across the sky, and set; stars other
than our sun being visible at night, but not during the day).
Objectives: The students will be able to identify the four phases of the moon after watching the video.
Students will construct models of the phases using sugar cookies.
Differentiation Students will be allowed to choose which two phases they would like to create on their cookie.
Strategies: The students will discuss the moon phases with a buddy.

ENGAGEMENT:
To begin the lesson, the teacher will ask students what they know about the moon. Students will have a moment to share
what they know about the moon. After a few moments, the teacher will discuss the moon and what the students will be doing
for this lesson.

Assessment: While the students are sharing what they know and do not know about the moon, the teacher will observe what
the students know and if there is any misinformation.
EXPLORATION:
During this stage the teacher will allow the students to get iPads and headphones (if there is not access to iPads, a classroom
TV will be fine). The teacher will then begin the video lesson of the moon and it’s phases.

Assessment: While students watch the video, the teacher will circulate the room to ensure the students are understanding
focusing on the video.
EXPLANATION:
Once the students finish the video, the teacher will have a discussion with the students about what the video entailed.
Students will share what they learned and the teacher will ask follow up questions:
What were the phases of the moon?
The moon appears bright because of?
How long does the moon cycle last?
What is it called when the moon is not visible?

Assessment: During this time the teacher will take notes on which students absorbed the material and which might need more
help. The teacher will ensure if the students know the phases and can move onto the moon phase cookies.
ELABORATION:
Students will each receive a plate, 4 circle sugar cookies, vanilla frosting, chocolate frosting and craft sticks. The teacher will ask
the students to demonstrate the moon phases with the frosting.

Assessment: While students are creating their moon phases, the teacher will ensure that the students know the moon phases
and are not just copying their neighbors cookie.
