A) The soccer team lost the game last night, so they will
not play in the tournament.
B) The soccer team lost the game last night; therefore,
they will not play in the tournament.

A) John has a lot of Algebra homework today, and he has


a lot of Biology homework to do.
B) John has a lot of Algebra homework today; likewise, he
has a lot of Biology homework to do.

1. B sentences use a CONJUNCTIVE ADVERB to
clarify relationship between ideas.
2. B sentences are punctuated with a semi-colon and
comma.

B) The soccer team lost the game last night; therefore,
they will not play in the tournament.

A) John has a lot of Algebra homework today, and he has

B) John has a lot of Algebra homework today; likewise, he

How do CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS
function in a sentence?

•  They work like coordinating conjunctions (fanboys)


to compose compound sentences.

• They help to clarify the relationships between the


independent clauses of a compound sentence.

• They are stronger, more precise, and more formal


than coordinating conjunctions (fanboys).

How do I use CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS to
compose a compound sentence?

Follow this sentence pattern:

Complete sentence ; conjunctive adverb , complete sentence.

I enjoy studying grammar; moreover, I enjoy learning the rules.

Learning grammar can be challenging; however, it will help you


do well on the ACT exam.

Students learned how to write compound sentences; thus,


students learned to add precision and variety to their writing.
