A General Requirements (SAIC-W-2037 - Insp of Socket & Seal welded Threaded Joints is used in conjunction with this checklist)

The thread joints shall be taper pipe thread (NPT) conforming to ASME
B1.20.1 unless otherwise required by specifications for specific
connections. Threaded connections for fire services are exempted and SAES-L-110,
A1 shall be in accordance with SAES-B-017. Para. 7.1
Refer to Attachment 1 & 2.
(NOTE: Threads are tapered (1:16) and cut
at 60 degree angles.)
Site threading operations are monitored in process for code quality per
ASME B1.20.1 as follows:
A) Pipe ends are reamed clean after threading.
B) Oil and residual shavings are
removed from inside piping C) OD threads are

PTFE (Teflon) tapes are not used for service temperature greater than SAES-L-110,
A3 204°C on threaded connections. All threaded joint compounds shall be
specified & approved by Saudi Aramco prior to their service application.

Threaded Joint Requirements (Incorporate into Gap Control Procedure & Inspection Practices)

Socket welded joints should be avoided in any service where crevice

corrosion, severe erosion, or cyclic loading may occur. Para. 5.2.2

SAES-L-110,
Socket weld joints are not permitted in location where high vibration can

occur (such as high velocity gas control valves and reciprocating pumps).

The axial gap between male and female component, as shown in Figure
SAES-L-110,
328.5.2C of ASME B31.3 code, shall be maximum of 3 mm and minimum
B3 of 1.5 mm. This gap is required prior to welding.

C Threaded Fitting Material Requirements & Limitations (Specifications are Checked)

Threaded and Socket Welding Fittings limitations (SHALL BE) as follows


SAES-L-110,
(Spec Check):
A) For steel piping in hazardous services, threaded fittings are
ASME B16.11 Class 3000, Class 6000 or higher.
B) Pipe unions in hazardous services shall be limited to Class 3000
threaded or socket welding forged steel unions per MSS SP-83.
C) Threaded
bushings with one size reduction are not be used. Only hex head steel
bushings are used
C1 Para. 11
D) Welding bosses are forged steel ASTM A105, ASTM A350 or ASTM
A182 per SASD AE-036175 (Attachment 3). Note hole/drilling reqmt.
E) Threadolets are Class 3000, 6000 or higher, as applicable, and abut
the pipe wall with a full penetration weld.
F) Malleable iron screwed fittings are ASME B16.3 Class 150 and are
galvanized and limited to non-hazardous services, except that pipe
unions shall be Class 300.
G) Pipe plugs for use in metallic piping are solid body, bar-stock, or
forged steel plugs per ASME B16.11.
SAES-L-110,

In hazardous services, maximum size of threaded connections shall be:


A) 1½-inch for standard fittings & valves
C2 B) 2-inch maximum for maintenance, minor field SAES-L-110,

modifications of existing piping, matching threaded specialty devices
(scraper signals, corrosion monitoring access, etc).

In non-hazardous services, maximum size of threaded connections is, A)


3-inch for standard fittings and valves,
C3 B) 4-inch maximum on special items such as fire hydrants unless a

Seal welding and bridge welding of threaded joints conforms with the SASD AB-

PTFE (Teflon) tape or joint compounds shall not be used in threaded SAES-L-110,

connections requiring seal welding. Para. 9.5

The seal weld shall be a fillet weld going from the outer diameter of the
female part, and it should be smooth with slight concavity as allowed by

ASME B31, to the male part covering all exposed threads without Para. 9.4
undercut.
SAES-L-110,

Threaded joints up to the first block valve are seal welded in the following
services and applications:
a) All hydrocarbons.
b) Boiler feed water, condensate, and steam systems utilizing
ASME Class 300 and higher flange ratings.
D5 c) Toxic materials such as chlorine, phenol, hydrogen sulphide, etc.

d) Corrosive materials such as acid, caustic, etc.
e) Oilfield chemicals (e.g., corrosion inhibitors, emulsifiers,
electrolytes, etc.)
f) Piping which is subject to vibration, whether continuous or
intermittent

d) Joints which require frequent disassembly and are located
downstream of a seal welded block valve, e.g., sample
connections.
