Dissertation of Ph.D. in Industrial and Information System Engineering
Advanced Swarm Inspired Computational Technique for Solving Transportation Problems in Logistics
Transportation network has always been an attractive field of research in logistics and supply chain management. Many
different variation of problems related to transportation networks often draw devotion of researchers to address them in their
studies. This is due to the fact that a huge portion of decision making in logistics and supply chain management sectors
depends immensely on transportation related matters on almost daily basis. In this dissertation, PSO based enhanced methods
have been proposed to handle different transportation networks. Swap-sequence based velocity tentative PSO is utilized to
handle Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP), double-layered local search based PSO for Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem
(CVRP) and hierarchical-iterative combined approach for Capacitated Location-Routing Problem (CLRP). The proposed
algorithms have demonstrated superior performances than the other approaches for solving benchmark problems. The
concepts proposed in this article is not only applicable to PSO based approach rather generalized expressions are described so
that they can be compatible with any other population based metaheuristics.
Thesis of M. Sc. in Energy Studies
Thesis I – Stand–alone solar-wind hybrid power system for Home: Resource Analysis (Brunei Darussalam)
Depletion of fossil fuel with increasing rate is a critical concern in the recent era. Even though energy consumption depends
mainly on fossil fuel, a major portion of population still don't have connection to electricity. Top on that environmental
pollution due to fossil fuel is another major issue. Utilizing renewable energy resources is an attractive way out for reducing
dependency on fossil fuel and bringing the remote area in touch with electricity. In this research, an economic evaluation of a
hybrid wind-photovoltaic traditional power generation system for typical houses is demonstrated. Combined power of wind
turbine and photovoltaic solar panel is stored in a battery bank to support a household. A methodology for calculation of the
Load of electricity in house, β distribution, clearness effect of solar radiation, probability density function of wind turbine,
cumulative distribution function, power curve and performance factor from wind speed in Brunei Darussalam is discussed.
Electricity load of two economic class with two house of each class is considered for experimental analysis. Five years solar
radiation data is used to find power generation resource from PV and six years data of wind speed is used to find the energy of
wind in Brunei Darussalam for stand-alone home.
Thesis II – Integration of Wind Energy into ASEAN Power Grid (APG)
The world today is facing an increasing demand of energy, especially in the form of electricity. Due to the fact that a huge population is still
having no (or insufficient) access of electricity, the actual need of electricity is more than as it seems. Till date electricity generation is
mostly dependent on fossil fuel which has negative environmental impacts resulting a great threat to human health as found in a study that
power generation emits nearly 10 billion tons of CO2 globally per year. Understanding this global intimidation necessitate finding alternate
sources for power generation. The renewable energy sources are prospective solutions to meet the growing demand of energy from reliable
sources which will even save the environment. In this regards, the Kyoto Protocol has asked member states to decrease their greenhouse gas
emissions, is a step forward decision to generate electricity from green power resources. To provide energy security, ASEAN leaders
announced ASEAN Power Grid (APG) plan, a proposal of integrating renewable resources into APG for green electricity generation is
introduced in this article. Wind energy integration is only considered as it is the most potential energy source among all renewable energy
sources available in Southeast Asia. In this report, the technical and economic facts and issues are identified such as wind energy
penetration level, present infrastructure and what level of amendment needed, forecasting wind energy for particular site precisely, planned
wind farm size, understanding of variability or wind resource, specific design of turbine, transmission system amendment, policy and
implementation etc. The potential resource locations are identified and marked on a map. Furthermore, it is found that these issues are not
only engineering but rather more economic and policy playing.
Final Year Project of B. Sc. in Mechanical Engineering
Development of Cryogenic Storage Vessel (DEWAR) with Minimum Evaporation Rate
In this project a pressure vessel is designed which is capable of storing liquid nitrogen of -196°C (77K) for 8 days. The vessel
is designed by two thin-walled bottles nested one inside the other and sealed together at the neck. Vacuum minimizes the
conduction and convection of heat and strong thermal insulation minimizes the radiation heat transfer and thus evaporation
rate is controlled. There are four major steps in this project, such as – Study one existing DEWAR – Make a prototype – Done
four important experiments related to project – Propose new Design and Materials for DEWAR to reduce evaporation rate.
