CSTP 2: Creating and Maintaining Effective

Environments for Student Learning

2.1 Promote social development and responsibility within a

caring community where each student is treated fairly and
respectfully

Level of Development: Applying-Integrating

I strive to create a supportive atmosphere and
stimulate discussions. My students are encouraged to
share their life experiences.

Students practice social situations through role playing
with their peers and social stories. Students have
responsibilities including classroom chores and kitchen
cleaning.

to design a lesson plan for social development. I
also engage my students in discussions about the
importance of being part of a community and
contributing to chores in the classroom and at
home.

2.2   Create physical or virtual learning environments that

promote student learning, reflect diversity, and encourage
constructive and productive interactions among students

Level of Development: Exploring

I strive to create a safe classroom environment, where
student can express themselves in a non-hostile
environment.

I model cultural respect and talk with students about
“tolerance of our differences.” I also encourage positive
social interactions during play time and in class.

students in conversations about diversity and tolerance
of our differences and model behavior that is tolerant of
people who are different than me.

 2.3   Establish and maintain learning environments that

are physically, intellectually, and emotionally safe

Level of Development: Applying

I work to make my classroom a safe space for students
that is free from hazards. I constantly work to make it
an environment where students know it’s safe to make
mistakes.

Students are free and ask questions about lessons and
engage in discussion. Conversations are repeatedly if
necessary.

2.4   Create a rigorous learning environment with high

expectations and appropriate support for all students.

ensure that student is learning at an appropriate pace
toward the IEP goals.

I work to make lessons fun and engaging. I ask
students to engage in deep thinking.

2.5   Developing, communicating, and maintaining high
standards for individual and group behavior.

Level of Development: Exploring

As a virtual teacher, I model the behavior that I would
like my students to engage in. I am professional and
interested in teaching and ask them politely to work for
me. I deal with unwanted behavior in the moment, when
it is happening.

I often collaborate with general education teachers for
advice about how to handle difficult behaviors.

classroom expectations I work with in my
sessions. I review these with my students at the
beginning of the year.

2.6   Employing classroom routines, procedures, norms, and

supports for positive behavior to ensure a climate in which all
students can learn

Level of Development: Exploring

I use several routines in my virtual sessions. I start with
a greeting and discussion about what happened since
our last session. I always end with a reward including
watching a fun video or a joke or just a fun discussion.

I address student’s unwanted and difficult behavior in a
timely manner. I work mostly with positive behavior
reinforcement. I try to find something that the student is
doing that I like, and I tell the student that I like that they
are (for example) being quiet or working hard or sitting
up straight.

2.7   Using instructional time to optimize learning.

Level of Development: Exploring

I organize lesson plans and materials and pace my
instruction to optimize learning. I always try to break my
session up into blocks of time to ensure that every IEP
goal is being worked on in every session. I try to use
technology to maximize my time. I am an organized
person and well prepared.

My students enjoy the routine and are much more
relaxed knowing what is going to happen in every
session.

Evidence: Class Schedule This is a class schedule
I use with one of my students. It ensures that I am
working toward all of his IEP goals in every
session by breaking the session into 15 and 30
minute blocks of time.
