from the CEO

Dear Entrepreneurs,

On behalf of all of us here at Hult Prize, congratulations! We are so proud of what

you have already accomplished and can’t wait to see you present your idea on
an even bigger stage.
Every year, tens of thousands of young people from colleges and universities
across the world come together through the Hult Prize to think big, be bold, and
work hard towards solving some of humanity’s biggest challenges. We believe in
the power of young people to create positive change in the world.

At Hult Prize, we have spent more than a decade helping students reimagine the
future of business through social entrepreneurship. You are joining a global
community of changemakers, thinking differently about how to achieve our goals
as a global community. Today, our program operates in nearly one hundred
countries and provides opportunities for you to learn valuable skills related to
pitching, creating business plans, marketing, and more.
None of this would be possible if it weren’t for our global staff, our phenomenal
Campus Directors, along with our thousands of students’ workforce. Please join
me in thanking them!

Keep practicing your presentation, and once the summit begins, HAVE FUN talking
about your business!

Thank you for joining us.

About the
Hult Prize

The Hult Prize empowers the next generation to reimagine the future of business.
Through our yearlong social entrepreneurship competition, over 100,000 young
people in 100+ countries work to create high impact startups that address the
annual Call to Action in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals. Finalists pitch their businesses to a panel of expert judges,
and the winning team receives $1M USD in funding to make their idea a reality.

Since it was launched in 2009 by a group of Hult International Business School

students, the Hult Prize has engaged more than 1 million youth worldwide. Many
of our alumni continue to work actively on solutions to the world's most pressing
social issues. The Hult family, founders and owners of EF Education First and
benefactors of the Hult International Business School, support the prize by
providing a US$1M grant to the winning team(s) at a capstone event each
September.

How Does
it Work?

Phase 1: OnCampus Program

The OnCampus Program serves as the first phase of the annual US $1,000,000 Hult
Prize competition. Student volunteers, known as Campus Directors, organize
training programs and community events at their universities focused on this
year's Hult Prize Call to Action.

The goal of every OnCampus Program is to select one winning team, who will
represent their university in the Regional Summits.

Phase 2: Regional Summits

The Regional Summits are hosted by the Hult Prize team in 16 cities around the
world. In 2022, thousands of competitors will pitch their business ideas to panels
of experts in an immersive digital format.

The winning teams from each of these summits will earn a spot at the Global

as Regional Summit Winners to qualify for the Global Accelerator. The round
provides the Hult Prize global pool of experts with the opportunity to submit
recommendations of the best startups from the Regionals who did not win
their event.

All 2nd Chance Round submissions are reviewed by the Hult Prize team, with
a few being selected each year for a spot at the Global Accelerator.

Phase 4: Global Accelerator

The Global Accelerator is the final step before reaching the finals of the Hult Prize
competition. The teams who make it to this stage are immersed in an intensive,
6-week program which aims to refine and build upon each team's social
venture.

Student entrepreneurs will be introduced to crucial business concepts such as

design thinking and work hand in hand with Hult Prize staff and experts to
take their social venture to the next level. At the conclusion of this stage of the
competition, six teams are selected to move on to the Global Finals.

Milestones & Resources
This section aims to guide competitors through key milestones during their Hult
Prize journey. As you further understand what’s vital for your startup to succeed, it
will become increasingly important for you to prioritize which milestones you
focus on, adapt, or create on your own. Accumulatively, these set of milestones
shall prepare you for the US$1M pitch and launch your impact startup.

Disclaimer: These recommended milestones aim to only provide you with

guidance and a focus to perform your best in your final pitch. You will not need to
submit these to anyone and will not be disqualified for not meeting them.

Please make sure to click on the hyperlinks to access additional resources.

1. Team Milestone

Full Team
A full team refers to the networks and relationships you (co-founders) and your
business are a part of. Human capital leads to the growth and scalability of your
startup, hence your team’s talents should be diversified to develop dynamic
capability and competitive advantage.

This milestone will help you understand the strengths and weaknesses of your
current team, and what kind of people you should be trying to bring to surround
your team, including potential advisors, employees, customers, local authorities,
investors, university professors, etc.

23 www.hultprize.org

2. Product/Service Milestones

Problem Defined
Find out what is the root cause of the problem. Identify the root cause and fix the
issue at its heart rather than the rippling effects. Then, tell the story about the
scope and scale of the problem you are solving by providing a clear problem
statement using information backed by research.

While defining the problem is just half the story, we want to know deeper
indications, the effect, the other triggers, and the connections between these
variables - a 'Root Cause Analysis', and not resorting to ‘Solution Bias’.

Solution Defined
Solution refers to either your product or service delivered to your target
customer. It shall be challenge aligned, well-thought out to directly solve the
customer’s problem you have identified previously and processed via theory of
change model to match outputs to your impact outcomes.

3. Startup Management Milestones

Company 1-Pager
A company 1-pager, sometimes called a 1-pager investor strategy or a 1-pager
business plan, is a concise snapshot of a startup and its unique value
proposition. An effective one-pager quickly orients the reader to the value of your
business, whether the reader is a customer, investor, potential partner, and more
without further research needed. You may refer to examples for inspiration, but it
is crucial to be creative and have your own signature!

4. Sales and Marketing Milestones

Your Target Market

Discover and explain who your ideal customer is and how many of them there
are in either an underserved or unaddressed market. Conduct a market analysis
to get a sense of the total addressable market size. Market research builds a
sturdy foundation for a business to be built upon, preparing the company for any
threats or weaknesses that may arise as the business grows. From getting to
know your target audience to exploring potential competitors, market research
gives businesses a competitive edge, allowing them to thrive in new
environments.

Go to Market
A Go-to-Market (GTM) strategy is a focused action plan created to successfully
release or promote a product/service to market, specifying how your startup will
reach its target customers and make the sales.

The purpose of a go-to-market strategy is to make sure that a product launched

reaches the right audience whether it be entering a new market or with a new
customer. It includes effective product positioning so your target customers
understand the value you will be offering.

A solid and comprehensive go-to-market strategy will give you a framework for
measuring your progress along the way, and help you detect and diagnose any
issues that may affect your success before they have the chance to run your
startup into the ground.

Pitch Pro-Tips
The pitch content pro-tips will help you in formulating your pitch script
and your pitch deck.

The Interest Generator / Opening Line

Your first statement should be a hook that acts like a slippery slope that leads
your audience to pay attention to the rest of your pitch. Without it, your pitch will
be average. Here’s an example of a perfect interest generator from the U-Light
pitch in the 2018 Hult Prize Finals. (The lights in the hall were switched off and the
opening line was: This is what 1.2 billion people in the world see when the Sun
goes down.)

Your Main Point

Now that you have everyone’s attention, what is your main point? Ideally, your
interest generator should capture the problem that you are trying to solve. Your
main point should be a brief and succinct presentation of your solution. For
example, U-Light was a cost-effective device that converts human energy into
electricity.

Redundancy
Repetition of the main point and your clear problem statement to make sure
your target audience gets it.

Your Pitch Recipe

This is how your pitch flows and should capture the interest generator, your main
point and the redundancy talking points throughout. A simple pitch recipe for a
business pitch can be:
• The Market problem
• Key issue + Insight
• Solution
• How it works
• Why it works

Your Pitch FAQs

In your notes make sure you record some FAQs you anticipate from your pitch to
make it easy to answer quickly. You can look for pitch feedback from several
people before your final pitch and record all the questions you will be asked as
potential FAQs.
