SS21403 ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY & CHEMODYNAMICS

TUTORIAL 2

1. The distilled water you use in the laboratory is slightly acidic because of dissolved CO2,
which reacts to form carbonic acid, H2CO3. Calculate the pH of a 0.0010 M solution of
H2CO3.
H2CO3 (aq) H+(aq) + HCO3-(aq) Ka = 4.4 × 10-7

2. Calculate the concentrations of the species in 0.15 M hydrocyanic acid, HCN, solution.
Ka = 4.0 × 10-10 for HCN.

3. Laboratory measurements show that a 0.100 M solution of chlorobenzoic acid has a pH of

2.50. Calculate Ka.

4. Calculate the pH of a solution from 0.050 M ammonium ion (Kb = 1.8 × 10-5).
NH4+ (aq) + H2O (l) H3O+(aq) + NH3(aq)

5. What is the pH of a sodium hydroxide solution at 25°C in which the hydroxide ion
concentration is 0.0026 M?

6. At 20°C, the solubility of N2 in water is 0.015 g/L when the partial pressure of nitrogen is
7.63 × 104 Pa. What is the solubility of N2 in water at 20°C when its partial pressure is
1.05 × 105 Pa?

7. In a sample of blood at 25°C, [H3O+] = 4.6 × 10-8 M. Find the molar concentration of OH-
and decide if the sample is acidic, basic, or neutral.

8. 0.2 M acetic acid and 0.4 M sodium acetate are dissolved in enough water to make 1.00
L of solution. Ka for acetic acid is 1.8 × 10-5. Calculate the pH of the solution using the
Henderson-Hasselbalch equation.
