How does the church look like?
Acts 2:42-47

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to

the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the
many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers
were together and had everything in common. They sold property and
possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to
meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and
ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the
favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those
who were being saved.

Lesson 2B

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

HABITS - OBEYING GOD
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one because they have a good return for their
work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man
who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lies down
together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A
cord of three strands is not quickly broken

Proverbs 27:17

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

What is Accountability?

• An obligation or willingness to accept

responsibility

• To account for one’s actions

• To be answerable to someone else

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

What is Accountability?

We should practice accountability in:

• Relationship with God

• Spiritual Disciplines
• Personal Life

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

Necessity of Accountability
1. Accountability is an essential part of a functional society.
Philippians 2:5-8
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as
Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with

God something to be used to his own advantage;

7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by

becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!

HABITS - OBEYING GOD
Necessity of Accountability
2. Accountability helps promote biblical controls or checks
and balances.
Romans 14:7-12
7 For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8 If we
live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we
belong to the Lord. 9 For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might
be the Lord of both the dead and the living.
10 You,
then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with
contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 It is written:
“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
every tongue will acknowledge God.’”
12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.
HABITS - OBEYING GOD
Necessity of Accountability
3. Accountability is necessary because like sheep we tend to
go our own way.

Matthew 28:19-20

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing

them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very
end of the age.”

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

Necessity of Accountability
4. Accountability promotes servant-like leadership in keeping
with the pastoral mandate to watch over the flock

Ephesians 4:11-13

11 SoChrist himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the

evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for
works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built
up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge
of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole
measure of the fullness of Christ.
HABITS - OBEYING GOD
Necessity of Accountability
4. Accountability is protective of both leaders and the flock.

Hebrews 13:17

17 Haveconfidence in your leaders and submit to their

authority, because they keep watch over you as those who
must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy,
not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

Importance of Accountability
1. You belong to God’s family with other believers

Ephesians 2:19
You are a member of God's very own family... and you belong
in God's House hold with every other Christian.

Romans 12:5
So in Christ we who are many forms one body and each
member belongs to all the others.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

Importance of Accountability
2. You need encouragement in order to grow spirituality

Hebrews 10:24

Let us think of one another and how we can encourage each

other to love and do good deeds.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

Importance of Accountability
3. You need accountability in order to grow spirituality
Proverbs 27:17
People learn from one another just as iron sharpens iron.

Galatians 6:1-2
Brothers if someone is trapped in some sin, you who are
spiritual should restore him gently…carry each other’s burdens.
And in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

Importance of Accountability
4. There is great power when people pray together

Matthew 18:19
Whenever two of you on earth agree about anything you pray
for, it will be done for you by My Father in heaven.

Matthew 18:20
For whenever two or three people have come together in my
name, I am there, right among them!”

HABITS - OBEYING GOD

Importance of Accountability
5. You are a servant to other Christians.

1 Peter 4:10

God has given you some special abilities, be sure to use them
to help each other.
