(1) Sometimes experience in other countries can help people to understand their
own identity better. Mahatma Gandhi was born in 1869 at Portandar in Western
India. After studying in India, he dreamt of going to England to study. He was told
that his Hindu religion did not allow voyages abroad. However, Gandhi was very
determined and he finally left for England in 1887. At first, he tried to learn to
behave like an English gentleman, but he soon learnt that it was better to be
himself. He studied law in London, qualifying in 1891. He also learnt about other
religions.
(2) He returned home to India and worked as a lawyer for two years. After some
problems, he was offered a job in South Africa. Here he experienced racism as a
member of the Indian community. He decided to fight for the rights of Indians
using "passive resistance. He had three main beliefs, namely non-violence,
religious tolerance and truth. When he finally returned to India in 1915, he became
a great political leader. During the fight for independence, he was often put in
prison, but his beliefs never changed.
(3) Gandhi had studied in Britain, so he understood the British better that they
understood him. Gandhi's leadership led to independence, but, on Independence
Day, 15th August, 1947, Gandhi refused to celebrate. He was in favor of Hindu-
Muslim unity, but Muslims and Hindus could not agree. so a separate Muslim state
was formed in Pakistan. In 1948, Gandhi started fasting to death as a protest
against fighting between India and Pakistan. He was assassinated by a Hindu
fanatic on 30th January 1948. India and Pakistan are still fighting in Kashmir
today. The fight for independence was a difficult one, but not as difficult as the
fight for non-violence, religious tolerance, and truth.

Soal Wind energy is produced by the movement of air and converted into power for
human use. Wind has been used as a source of energy for more than a thousand
years, but was replaced by fossil fuels for much of the 20th century. Today, wind
is making a comeback as a source of electricity and power.
Wind energy is produced with wind turbines—tall, tubular towers with blades
rotating at the top. When the wind turns the blades, the blades turn a generator and
create electricity. Wind turbines can have a horizontal or vertical axis. The
turbines do not actually produce wind energy. The blades turn, convert the energy
of wind into rotational energy, a form of mechanical energy, and this energy is in
turn converted into electrical energy.
Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWTs) are the most familiar type of electricity-
producing windmill. Most have three large blades that spin parallel to their towers,
where the main rotor and generator are located. Most HAWT arrays are painted
white, to promote visibility to low-flying aircraft. This type of turbines can be
much bigger than their vertical counterparts.
Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have varied, unusually shaped blades that
rotate in complete circles around their tower. The main rotor and generator are
located near the ground, making maintenance easier and less expensive. VAWTs
do not have to be upwind to generate electricity. Vertical-axis wind turbines can be
much smaller than their horizontal counterparts. Standing only 5 meters (15 feet)
tall, these VAWTs can be installed on the roofs of buildings.
Turbines cannot operate at every wind speed. If winds are too strong, they can be
damaged. Therefore, the turbine has an automatic controller that turns on when
winds are blowing at prime speed for generating electricity. This speed is usually
13 to 90 kilometers per hour (8 to 55 miles per hour). If the winds become stronger
than that, the controller turns the turbine off.

Which of the following is not the advantages of VAWT turbines mentioned in the
passage?
Pembahasan
“Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have varied, unusually shaped blades that
rotate in complete circles around their tower. The main rotor and generator are
located near the ground, making maintenance easier and less expensive. VAWTs
do not have to be upwind to generate electricity. Vertical-axis wind turbines can
be much smaller than their horizontal counterparts. Standing only 5 meters (15
feet) tall, these VAWTs can be installed on the roofs of buildings.”
Artinya:
bangunan.”

Soal There are numeros consequences due to illegal activities in the foresty sector.
Revenues lost by governments casued by illegal logging result in decrease of their
ability to invest in the forestry sector. This han an effect on poverty levels,
primarily because of the revenue lost by goverment. As result, reduces their
financial capability as well as the programs that could be implemented to help the
poor.
Moreover, poor people are not in a postion to influence political bodies. This
keeps them from accesing the forest resource. Finally the resources’s ;ow cost
contributes to an increase in waste and provides very little incentive to buy timber
harvested from forests managed in a sustainble manner. Inadequate forests law
enforcement and governance in other countries can also threaten sustainble forests
management.
Despite the negative impacts, some stakeholders might benefit from illegal forest
activities, such as consumers who could benefit from lower process and national
industries that could increase their competitiveness by having access to lower
timber prices
Other more practice solutions are being put forward to reduce illegal loging and
trade. Some if those solutions relate more to timber trade, there is no doubt that
forest certification is seen, for some as tool; among many others, that enables
control over the illegal wood trade., especially when it comes to the cain of
custody. Also, there are other methods presently used or put forward to help
combat illegal loging and illegal trade. They inculde log tracking systems, legality
license-based verification system such as labeling, privat and public procurement
policies, international coorporatiion and coordination in trade statistic, information
exchanghe on illegal trade, an the study of possible trade-related measures.
B. the more illegal logs entering the market, the more competitive the prices
C. the wider the illegal logging, the less, forest will remain on earth.
D. the richer the people, the more they will influence the government
E. the more extensive the illegal logging, the poorer the people
Pembahasan Jawaban: C. the wider the illegal logging, the less, forest will remain on earth.

Soal From toe length to handwriting and sleeping position, there have been countless
studies linking various features with specific personality traits. But these are of
course just associations between incidental features – which toe length we happen
to have does not, after all, shape who we are as individuals. For that, we need to
look at the brain and its complex anatomy. Now it has been discovered that there
are striking structural differences in the brains of people with different personality
types. It is believed that the structural changes – seen as variations in the thickness,
area and folding of the brain – may result from differences in development in early
life.
It was found that neuroticism, a personality trait underlying mental illnesses such
as anxiety disorders, was linked to a thicker cortex (the brain’s outer layer of
neural tissue) and a smaller area and folding in some brain regions. Conversely,
openness, a trait reflecting curiosity and creativity, was associated to thinner
cortex and greater area and folding in the brain. The other personality traits were
linked to other differences in brain structure, such as agreeableness, which was
correlated with a thinner prefrontal cortex (this area is involved in tasks including
processing empathy and other social skills).
This is the first time the big five personality traits have been clearly linked to
differences in brain thickness, area and folding in a large sample of healthy
individuals. However, it was previously found that the brains of teenagers with
serious antisocial behavioral problems differ significantly in structure to those of
their peers who do not display such disruptive behavior.

Soal The Boston Tea Party was one of the events that led to the American
Revolution. It happened in the American colony of Massachusetts in 1773. At the
time, the colonies were ruled by Great Britain. For many years the American
colonist had complained about the way British government treated them. One of
the complaints was that the government made the colonists pay taxes on goods that
were shipped to them. Although an indirect tax, it was opposed by many American
colonists who saw this legislation as another attempt by Parliament to assert
unconstitutional authority over the colonies. They complained so strongly about
the taxes that the government eventually ended most of the taxes.
The colonist still had to pay tax on tea, however. And there was only one
company that was allowed to ship tea to the colonies and to sell it there. Colonist
in New York City and Philadelphia refused to allow the ships to unload their
cargo. In Massachusetts, however, the governor, Thomas Hutchinson, was loyal to
the British. He allowed the ships to enter Boston Harbor and unload their cargo.
He also made merchants pay the tax on the tea.
The first tea shipment arrived in Boston Harbor on the Dartmouth in late
November of 1773, and two more soon followed. After its arrival, by law, tea had
to be unloaded within 20 days. On December 16, the twentieth day after the
Dartmouth’s arrival, Sam Adams organized a meeting of his fellow Bostonians to
discuss what to do about the tea. Incredibly, 5,000 people (about 1/3 of the
population of Boston) attended the gathering. Later that evening, the Sons of
Liberty inspired by Adams, and many dressed as Native Americans, tossed 92,000
pounds of tea (valued at about $1.7 million today) into the harbor.
The British government soon imposed several new laws that were meant to
punish the colonist. One of the new laws closed Boston’s harbor until the colonist
paid for the tea that was ruined. Although the new laws were aimed mainly at
Massachusetts, they made the colonies want to work together to end British rule.
Representatives from the 13 colonies met to protest the laws in Philadelphia on
September 5, 1774. The meeting became the First Continental Congress. This
important event, possibly more so than any other from the colonial era, is
emblematic of American resistance to British oppression.
