FEATURES
The Soil Instruments In-Place Inclinometer (IPI) sensor incorporates a solid state (MEMS) accelerometer
making the instrument virtually shock proof, giving a high degree of repeatability and accuracy.
The sensor incorporates an on-board microprocessor which performs an automatic temperature
compensation of the tilt (g) data.
Three versions of the sensor are available, Horizontal, Vertical and Inclined. The vertical is also avail-
able as a biaxial sensor. The Soil Instruments In-Place Inclinometer is a very low power, low EMC
device which conforms to the specifications laid down under EN-300-220, making it particularly suit-
able for work on or adjacent to railway lines and tunnels.
Low cost, simple, rugged sensor technology, requiring very low power.
Sensor strings can give a complete profile of vertical or horizontal displacements.
Available in Uniaxial and Biaxial versions.
Easy to automate via data acquisition and I-Site software.
Can be supplied as a Cable Free data transmission version.
In-Built temperature compensation.
Waterproof to 2000kPA.

TECHNICAL APPLICATIONS
The Soil Instruments In-Place
Inclinometer (IPI) sensor utilises a
MEMS solid state accelerometer
which has no moving parts and is
virtually shock proof.
The sensor itself is a small discrete
device, which measures in g (grav-
ity). Soil Instruments have designed
the power supply electronics, out-
put signal conditioning, housing
and calibration procedures to
enable this technology to be used
in geotechnical and structural
applications.
The sensor incorporates an on-
board microprocessor, which per-
forms an automatic temperature
compensation of the tilt (g) data.
The vertical IPI is available in both
uniaxial and biaxial configura-
tions. The horizontal and inclined

are available as uniaxial sensors
only. In Place Inclinometers are
ideally installed in Soil Instruments
EC casing. The sensors combine
with gauge lengths and wheel
assemblies to build up a concate-
nated string in the borehole.
The sensors are powered and
data recorded by a datalogger
such as the Campbell CR100.
Alternatively, Soil Instruments
Cable Free transmitters can be fit-
ted to give a cable free IPI system
– please see datasheet C12CF for
details of the Soil Instruments
Cable Free system.
IPI sensors are specifically
designed for automated monitor-
ing.
To create a profile of the hole to
be monitored, a summed deflec-
tion plot is calculated from the
data. If I-Site software is used, a
near real time profile can be
drawn and constantly updated.
