ly thankful he came up with the idea. Although there are other possi-
ble ways of tuning a diatonic harmonica, his system has become the
b e n c h m a r k a n d s till d e f i n e s t h e s o u n d to d a y.

Originally conceived to allow for the combination of simple chords
w i t h s i n g l e n o t e f o l k m e l o d i e s , i t a l s o p r o d u c e s t h o s e u ni q u e l y b e a u ti ­
ful sounds with which the harmonica has been associated ever since.
