What is communication?

COMMUNICATION:-
Communication comes from the Latin word “Communis” means common. When we
communicate we are trying to establish a “commonness” with someone.

DEFINITION & MEANING OF COMMUNICATION:-


“ A sending, giving or exchanging of information ,ideas from one place to another place”.

OR

“ A process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system


of symbols, signs or behavior, also a technique for expressing ideas effectively in a speech”.

ACCORDING TO OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY:-


Communication- The imparting, conveying or exchange of ideas, knowledge etc. (whether by
speech, writing or signs)

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION:-
(i)- Intra-personal communication

(ii)- Inter-personal communication

(iii)- Extra-personal communication

(iv)- Machine Assistance communication

(1)- Intra-personal communication:-


Intra-personal communication also known as “Self communication”. In this way, a person or
individual communicate with your own self, talk to yourself, correct yourself and write diary on
daily basis etc. Intra-personal communication is the basis of all other forms of human
communication , without an effective system of Intra-personal communication , an organism is
unable to function in its environment --- that is, to be open to external forms of
communication. Ideally this communication system allows one to make decisions based on
information received through the senses.

(2)- Inter-personal communication OR Face to face communication:-


Inter-personal communication is exchange of information between two or more people. It is
usually involves face to face interaction, because both the spoken and body language are used
to communicate. It is usually a two way process. Inter-personal communication requires people
to “build knowledge of one another” to get to know them as unique individuals.

Inter-personal skill also includes:-


(a) Ability to listen and understand
(b) Problem solving
(c) Decision making

ELEMENTS OF INTER-PERSONAL COMMUNICATION:-


(i)- Sender and receiver

(ii)- Channel (words, signs, symbols, verbal or non-verbal ways)

(iii)- Feedback

(iv)- Message

In this way of communication immediate feedback can be obtained, which is essence of


effective communication.

(3)- Extra-personal communication:-


The process by which man communicates with animals, plants or non-living objects. People
talks to their pets, plants, and in animated things like toys, etc.

(4)- Machine Assistance communication:-


Communication through machine, in which one or more people communicating by means of a
mechanical devices, like ATM machine, mobile phone, SMS, etc.
