FORMATIVE TASK - MYP4

Tibor Varga
The level of each exercise is for Criterion A.
For Criterion C you are assessed considering the whole test and according with the levels shown at the end of
the test.

[A: levels 1-2]

1) Solve the following equa on:

3x + 5(x − 12) = 20
3x + 5x -60=20
8x=80
x=10

[A: levels 3-4]

2) Show (and prove) the type of propor onality there is between x and y in the formula below.

20
5∙y =
x2
We can clearly see that when x increases y decreases. This is because x is in the denominator. So we
know that it is an inverse propor onality. Now because x is to the second power it is an inversely
square propor onality. By plo ng it on a graphing calculator this is further proved:

3) Solve the following system of equa ons using the subs tu on method.

check the answer of the previous system graphically.

We subs tute the rst equa on into the second one:
6-3x-2x = -4
6-5x=-4
-5x=-10
x=2
A er this we can solve for y by using the found x in the rst equa on:
y= 6 - 3x2
y=6-6
y=0

4) Calculate the price of 1 Kg of broccoli and the price of 1 Kg of apples, if, 5 Kg of broccoli and 2 Kg of
apples cost €16.20 and, 3 Kg of broccoli and 7 Kg of apples cost €24.80. (show your working).
a: price of apple
b: price of broccoli
Equa on 1:
5b + 2a = 16.20
Solving for a:
2a = 16.20 - 5b
a=8.1-2.5b
Equa on 2:
3b + 7a = 24.80
Subs tu ng for a:
3b + 7(8.1-2.5b) = 24.80
3b + 56.7 - 17.5b = 24.80
-14.5b = -31.9
b= €2.2
Solving for a using the be we found:
a=8.1-2.5b
a=8.1-2.5(2.2)
a= €2.6
Therefore price of 1kg of broccoli is €2.2 and 1kg of apples is €2.6, hence:
Price of 1kg apples and 1kg of broccoli = 2.2 + 2.6
Price of 1kg apples and 1kg of broccoli = €4.8
