Management and Control Practices
◼ Chicks and Poults should be obtained from FT and
PD free parent flocks
◼ Pullorum and Typhoid free flocks should not be
mixed with other confined birds
◼ Chicks and poultry should be placed clean
environment with proper disinfection
◼ Chicks and Poults should receive pelletized and
crumbled feed be to minimize introduction of S.
gallinarum and S. pullorum through contaminated
feed ingredients
◼ Fowl Typhoid vaccine is used in some countries
where disease is endemic
◼ Introduction of Salmonella from outside sources
must be minimized
◼ Free flying carrier birds source of infection
◼ Rats, mice, cats may be source of infection
◼ Drinking water must be chlorinated to minimize
chances of contamination
◼ Mechanical carriers including feed trucks, poultry
crates, egg trays etc.
◼ Proper disposal of dead birds is essential
Treatment
◼ Chloramphenicol and florfenicol
◼ Nitrofuran group including Frultadone and
Furazolidone
◼ Sulfonamides
◼ Aminoglycosides (gentamicin) and Tetracycline
group (CTC)
◼ However no drug or combinations of drugs
eliminate infection from treated flocks
◼ BACTERIN is good option
