Music Educa on Lesson Plan

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Grade Level or Ensemble: Beginning Band 4-5th Grade

Central Focus for the Lesson: Focus is to get students to understand the mechanics of
an ensemble setting and becoming a better musician.

Relationship to Curricular Context or Unit Plan (where does the current teaching fit in
the larger picture?)
The students are in beginning band. I believe this connects to the early stages of a
musician. For example, time, rhythm, breathing, are all useful tools that the
students will use through the course of their lives.

Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to understand how to properly warm up with their given
instrument.
Students will be able to sit with correct posture.
Students will become aware of their issues and begin to examine themselves.

Vocabulary: (New terminology for your focus, should appear through the objectives and
assessment)

Breathing, Posture, Tone Production, tempo, release, tonguing, stacatto

Standards to be addressed: Paraphrase of the meaning (not just number)

(MU:Cn11.04)

What do I know about the students’ developmental progress or prior knowledge in this
area?
