Intended Learning Outcomes:

 Differentiate stability from sustainability.


 Define global food security; and
 Critique existing models of global food security.
Sustainable Development

 Sustainable Development

- The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of
the future generations to meet their own needs (Chambers and Conway, 1992).
 Stability
- It is the ability of the system to keep it in the given parameters. It is used to
attract attention to a balance between today's needs and needs of future
generations, including their need for safe and healthy environment.
 Inertia - the ability of a system to resist being disturbed or altered.
 Constancy - the ability of a system to maintain a certain size or state.
 Resilience - the ability of a system to recover after disturbance.

 Sustainability
The ability to maintain at a certain rate or level. Sustainability is often thought
of as a long-term goal. The ideals and principles behind it lay on broad concepts such as
intergenerational equity, gender equity, social tolerance, poverty alleviation,
environmental preservation and restoration, natural resource conservation, and building
just and peaceful societies.

Models of Global Sustainable Development

-The pursuit of sustainable development requires (Brundtland & Khalid, 1987):

• A political system that secures effective citizen participation in decision making.

• an economic system that is able to generate surpluses and technical knowledge on a self-reliant and
2 sustained basis.

•a social system that provides for solutions for the tensions arising from disharmonius development.

•a technological system that can search continuously for new solutions.

•an international system that can search continuosly for new solutions.

• an administrative system that is flexible and has the capacity for self correction.

Sustainable Development Goals

1. End Poverty in all its form everywhere.

Global Food Security

- “it is when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to
sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food
preferences for an active and health life.” (World Food Summit, 1996)

Factors Influencing Global Food Security

1. Rising food prices and poverty.


2. World population growth.
3. Rising incomes and growing per capita food consumption.
4. Rising cost of fuel and agricultural inputs like fertilizers and pesticides.
5. Stagnating or decreasing agricultural yield growth rates in developing countries in the
context of poor or dropping levels of public investment in agricultural infrastructure
and research and development.
