Poetry Lesson 3
Part 3: Examine a Poem

Look closer at Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” Answer the following questions. Submit to
SP. We’ll discuss these questions in class as well, so be prepared to share your answers.

Identify examples of each of the elements we’ve talked about.

1. On the surface, "The Road Not Taken" is about a walk in the woods.  However, the walk
and the paths are metaphoric for something else. What do you think that is?

2. What do you think the road “less traveled by” represents?
The narrow path of good
3. At the end, what does the sigh mean? Is this a sigh of regret or satisfaction? Why do
you think so?
Satisfaction, because he is in a place where he is at peace
4. What do you think is Frost’s theme? Why do you think so?
Every choice effects our lives. Had he taken the traveled road, he would have gone to a
different place
