Greece is always surprising and nowhere more so than the Pelion peninsula, home to the eponymous
mountain where mythological Centaurs roamed and taught Achilles. Pelion features every shade of
green, from centuries old olive and plane trees to huge sweet chestnuts, majestic oaks, ash and pines
with mid-sized carobs, judas and smokebush (Cotinus coggygria). In the autumn deep red apples, figs
and pomegranates as well as srawberry trees (Arbutus unedo) offer their precious gifts.
For the first time our course participants will have the opportunity to identify and learn about the
trees of Pelion as well as sketch their particularities, shapes and relationship to their surroundings.
The group will be based in Lafkos, South Pelion, a beautiful rural area that has embraced simple
tourism for many years, mainly for Greeks.
David Lewis and Anna Martin will share their love of Pelion with you. Each day you will walk to
discover new trees which you can sketch in situ. You can use pen and ink, pencil or watercolour or a
combination. A well-stocked library with botanical books is available, and you can immerse yourself in
the calm and reassuring world of trees.
David is an ideal walking guide for this exciting opportunity, having spent over 20 years
as a university lecturer teaching students about trees and forest management. He is a
keen walker and has trekked extensively in Southern Europe.
Day 2 Short talk from a local who will tell you about Pelion, some of its history and describe
the kalderimi (stone footpaths which link the traditional hill villages and also the
coastal settlements). Discuss your painting style and level as well as any particular
interests in nature with the tutors. Walk into village for taverna lunch and to look at
the planes, cypress and linden in the imposing square. Learn about these trees and
make sketches.
Return to the hotel to work on the sketches in the studio. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3 – 7 The group will be taken to a different location to start a linear or circular walk where
we will find special trees and large shrubs. The walks will be relatively short but those
who wish to go further can continue with David. The others will stay with Anna once
the chosen subject has been found. Lunch will be provided and will either be at a local
restaurant or a packed lunch giving you flexibility and will be at a place where you can
do more sketching.
The group will return to the hotel in mid afternoon for more time in the studio if
wished before dinner at the hotel.
There will be one longer excursion day to see more of Pelion. Lunch will be taken at a
renowned taverna and the group will be free for dinner on that day.
Day 8 Departure of participants, or a rest over the weekend. There is a possibility to continue
using the studio, tools and materials unsupervised over the weekend for a small extra
charge. Please ask if you would like to stay for extra nights and/or make sure of the
studio space.
Notes Non-sketching partners can come on the stroll or go on a more strenuous route as they wish.
You will need to bring and carry all your own equipment, including a sketch book and watercolour
pad, that ideally will fit into a back pack, on the walk. Daily itinerary subject to minor changes.
Some studio work will be included at the end of the day, so that you can produce more finished
paintings from your sketches. For this you will need to bring all your normal equipment with you on
holiday - a list will be provided nearer the time.
