ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 1 – INTRODUCTION

7. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The ADAHRS can be installed in an EFIS equipped aircraft or a non-EFIS equipped

aircraft. ADAHRS installation instructions for aircraft with EFIS are described in this
manual.

A. Description of ADAHRS with EFIS

The Chelton Flight Systems ADAHRS provides a data conversion function for the
Chelton Flight Systems Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS). The
ADAHRS module receives inputs from the Magnetic Sensor Unit (MSU), Outside
Air Temperature probe (OAT) and the aircraft pitot and static systems and
translates them to digital data that is routed to the Integrated Display Units (IDU).
The main function of the ADAHRS module is to provide heading, attitude and air
data information to the IDU. See Figure 34 - ADAHRS Block Diagram.

8. Component Description

The ADAHRS is made up of three components, the ADAHRS module, the MSU, and the
OAT probe with interface wiring harnesses. These components are described in detail
in the following sections of this manual.

A. Description of the ADAHRS Module

The ADAHRS module contains an Air Data Computer (ADC), the Attitude
Heading Reference System (AHRS), a heater, an electrical connector, a status
light, pitot and static ports and associated electronics. These components are
housed in a machined aluminum housing that is anodized for corrosion
protection. By incorporating the above components in one device,
communication, wiring, power, and mounting issues are minimized while
providing improved reliability and shielding. All covers and connectors are O-ring
sealed. See Figure 1 - ADAHRS Module.

The ADAHRS module communicates via RS-232, RS-422, and ARINC 429
digital communication ports. Input data comes from the MSU via RS-422.
Output data from the ADAHRS module is routed to one or more IDUs via RS-
232. Other devices may use the ARINC 429 outputs. All input and output lines
are protected from lightning and High Intensity Radio Frequency (HIRF)
interference per applicable DO-160E levels. A Fast Slave switch is installed to
activate ground mode function for alignment. The ADAHRS module receives DC
electrical power from the airframe through a single circuit breaker for a single
bus system or from two circuit breakers from a multi-bus system. Aircraft DC
power is also supplied through the same circuit breaker of a single bus system to
the ADAHRS modules’ internal heater. Aircraft DC power is supplied through a
separate circuit breaker of a multi-bus system to power the ADAHRS modules’
internal heater.

Internal to the ADAHRS module are rate sensors, accelerometers, pressure

sensors and heaters. The rate sensors and accelerometers are used to sense
64-000023 Page 10 of 123
ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 1 – INTRODUCTION

the positioning and acceleration of the ADAHRS module in orthogonal space.

The pressure sensors are used to detect and calculate the absolute and
differential air pressures of the airframe.

Figure 1 - ADAHRS Module

The AHRS measures the Cartesian accelerations and rates using solid state
MEMS sensors, three orthogonal accelerometers, temperature sensors, analog
to digital (A-D) converters, a heater and a controller that collects the digitized
sensor data and transmits it to the CPU board via a high speed serial data link.

The heater is a resistive element that is attached to the heat sink and is used to
ensure the ADAHRS module is heated to the minimum operating temperature
that the sensors require.

The ADC assembly includes the static absolute pressure sensor, the pitot to
static differential pressure sensor, interface circuitry for the OAT probe, a heater,
LED status indicator, A-D converters, ARINC-429 driver and a microprocessor.

Circuitry on the ADC connects to the RTD OAT probe. The components have
been selected so that a two-wire interface to the Resistance Thermal Device
(RTD) is practical. To maintain accuracy, the RTD cable should be less than 40
feet when using 22 gauge wires.
The ADC communicates via RS232 serial Tx. An Rx line is used during
calibration. The ADC also transmits on an ARINC-429 (low speed) line.
A green Light Emitting Diode (LED) located on the ADC board and visible
outside the ADAHRS modules housing via a sealed light-pipe, reports the status
of the ADAHRS module, Figure 2 – ADAHRS Module LED. The LED illustrates
when power is present on the ADC board. The LED flashes whenever a
message is received from the AHRS board at the communication rate and

CHAPTER 1 – INTRODUCTION

properly processed by the ADC microprocessor, thereby validating the health of

both devices. The states of the LED are as follows:

LED

Figure 2 – ADAHRS Module LED

OFF: No power.

Steady ON: Power is present, but either the AHRS or the ADC CPU is not
functioning properly.

Blinking: Blinking at the rate and duty cycle of AHRS communications

indicating that both the AHRS and the ADC processors are
working normally.

1) Electrical Interface

External connections to the ADAHRS module are via a standard MIL-C

38999 Series II or III circular 22 pin connector.

2) Pitot & Static Ports

Air pressure inputs are connected to the pitot and static ports on the
ADAHRS module. Both threaded port holes are MS16142-4, female
Unified Fine 0.4375-20 straight threads, intended to accommodate
standard fitting ends per MS33656-4 such as AS4841 fittings with
AS4395 E 04 and AS568A-904 O-rings. An example of fittings that may
be used is an AN815-4D union with AS568A-904 O-rings installed on the
pitot/static port and an AN919-6D reducer on the static port.

B. Description of the MSU

Components of the MSU, Figure 3 - MSU, are housed in a machined aluminum

housing that is anodized for corrosion protection. All covers and connectors are
O-ring sealed.

64-000023 Page 12 of 123

ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 1 – INTRODUCTION

Figure 3 - MSU

The MSU consists of a triaxial earth field magnetometer, a two axis

accelerometer (tilt sensor), a microcontroller, power supplies and communication
with protection circuitry collocated in a single enclosure. It is a solid state device
with no moving parts.

The MSU processes aircraft yaw, roll, pitch rates, magnitude and transmits field
vector information to the ADAHRS module via an RS422 differential signal serial
communication link. All lines are protected from lightning and HIRF per the
applicable DO-160E levels. The MSU receives raw power, through either one or
two circuit breakers, from the aircraft.

The MSU’s connector is a standard MIL-C 38999 (Souriau 8D0C-11F35PN)

connector. The connector mates to an 11-35 configuration MIL38999, 13 pin
connector such as a Souriau 8D5-11F35SN with a 90 degree (M85049/39-11N)
strain relief.

Utilizing a single bus power system, DC power is supplied through a single circuit
breaker to the ADAHRS module and to the MSU. Utilizing a multi-bus system,
DC power is supplied through dual circuit breakers to the ADAHRS module and
to the MSU. The ADAHRS module and MSU receive power in parallel from each
circuit breaker.

C. Description of the OAT Probe

The Chelton Flight Systems OAT probe, Figure 4 - OAT Probe, is a remote1000
ohm platinum Resistance Thermal Device (RTD) based temperature sensor that
is mounted through the exterior skin of the airframe. It monitors the outside air
temperature and sends analog data to the ADAHRS module for use in the air
data calculations.

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

2. PRE-INSTALLATION INFORMATION

Always follow good avionics installation practices per FAA Advisory Circulars 43.13-1B,
43.13-2A and AC 23-1311A or later FAA approved revisions of this document.

Follow the installation procedure in this chapter as it is presented for a successful

installation. Read and understand the entire chapter before beginning the installation
procedure. Perform the post installation checkout before closing the work areas in case
problems occur.

Complete an electrical load analysis on the aircraft prior to starting modification to ensure
the aircraft electrical system has the ability to carry the ADAHRS electrical load per AC
43.13-1B, Chapter 11. Refer to Chapter 1, Table 3 – List of Specifications and Major
Components (by part number) that Make Up the Equipment System Complying with the
Standards Prescribed in TSO-C106 for the power consumption of each component.
Record the aircraft electrical load; identify system configuration and location of equipment
on FAA Form 337.

3. WIRING/CABLING TERMINATION

A. General

Terminate all individual cable shields, which are not “dead ended” using a solder
sleeve and braid pigtail (equivalent in cross section to shield braid without center
conductors) or optionally the braid pull-out method. Use the smallest solder sleeve
that will fit over the cable shield and the braid pigtail.

The shield pigtail may be either a wire segment (of sufficient diameter equivalent to
shield braid without center conductors) or another small braid segment. Wire
segments are used when the cable shield is terminated to a connector or a terminal
lug. Braid segments are used when the cable shield terminates at a backshell or
EMI spigot, terminal lug, or slip ring used to terminate a braid sock. Environmental
splice assemblies with multiple terminations may use either wire pigtails, braid
pigtails or a combination of both.

For backshell terminations, the individual cable shield shall be terminated at the end
of the cable, maintaining the minimum length of unshielded conductors with the
shield pigtail installed at the back end. The solder sleeve may end up inside the
backshell depending on the length of the unshielded portion of the cable. See
Figure 5 - Solder Sleeve Assembly.

ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

Figure 5 - Solder Sleeve Assembly

B. Solder Sleeve Assembly

CAUTION: Cutting through the cable jacket may result in damage to the shield.

1) Remove the outer jacket using a thermal stripper or other suitable means,
exposing 0.25 to 0.38 inch of shield braid.

2) When using a suitable tool other than a thermal stripper to remove jacket,
score jacket lightly and bend cable to complete jacket separation. Do not
cut completely through cable jacket.

3) Push the solder sleeve over the exposed shield braid so solder sleeve shall
be approximately centered over the exposed shield braid.

4) To avoid heat concentration which might split or otherwise damage the

solder sleeve, the end of the shield ground wire insulation, if not preinstalled,
should be positioned approximately even with the inner edge of the ring.

5) Maintain the relative position of the solder sleeve, shield ground wire and
shield braid during assembly. See Figure 6 - Wire Termination.

Figure 6 - Wire Termination

6) Use tinned copper braid Alpha P/N 1223 (3/64 inch) or equivalent for pigtail.
Lap pigtail braid or wire segment with wire shield and place solder sleeve
over assembly.

64-000023 Page 27 of 123

ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

7) Shrink the solder sleeve using infrared or hot air heaters. Apply the
heat uniformly, periodically rotating the solder sleeve during the
heating process. Do not allow the infrared or hot air heater to touch
the solder sleeve wiring during the heating process (touching of the
heating guard is acceptable).

8) Inspect for conformance to criteria for installed solder sleeves per the
following:

a) No appearance of the solder preform ring will remain.

b) In the case of solder sleeves with indicator rings the following

also applies: It is necessary that the indicator ring has
completely disappeared or melted.

NOTE: If the process continually results in less than 100 percent

melting of the indicator ring the wire may be a problem with
the process, which should be corrected before further
processing.

1 If infrared heating is used, the problem is usually

caused by a dirty reflector.

2 If hot air is used, the sleeve may not be centered in

the hot air reflector.

c) The shield ground wire shall be approximately centered in the

melted area.

9) Preformed solder ring inserts are to melt and flow along the shield
ground wire leads and shield.

10) A minimum of 0.125 inch fillet length is visible under a maximum

power of 4X magnification along the shield ground wire lead and
shield junction on at least one side of the shield ground wire. This
requirement also applies to each shield ground wire of a multiple
shield ground wire termination.

11) Browning or darkening of the sleeve is acceptable unless this

condition inhibits visibility of the solder termination.

12) The materials must not be split, charred, or otherwise damaged to

any extent that would compromise the insulating integrity of the
sleeve.

13) Inserts are to melt and flow around the circumference of the cable
between the cable jacket and the insulation sleeve to prevent solder
from flowing out of the work area.

64-000023 Page 28 of 123

ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

14) The melted insert rings must not obstruct visual inspection of the
solder joint.

15) A maximum of ½ inch wicking up the shield ground wire (measured

from the shield ground wire end of the sleeve) is allowed.

C. Optional Shield Pull-Out Method

1) Do not use this procedure for a shield that has flat conductor braid strands.

2) Remove the cable outer jacket to the point of breakout.

3) Using a non-metallic awl or similar tool, start a small hole in the shield braid
approximately 0.5 inch from end of outer jacket by spreading the shield
carriers slightly. See Figure 7 - Shield Pull-Out Method and Figure 8 -
Shield Pull-Out Method.

4) Push the shield braid back on the wire(s) to cause it to bunch.

5) Widen the hole in the shielding by alternately pushing shield carriers back in
each direction.

6) As the hole enlarges, start bending the wire(s) slightly to allow shield carriers
to be worked down over the bent wire(s) until the wire(s) can be pulled
through the opening. During this operation, avoid damage to braid and
other insulation.

7) Do not overstress individual shield strands causing breakage.

8) Do not subject the conductors to a bend radius less than 3 times the
insulation diameter.

9) Work the bunched shielding back down the wires and straighten the shield
wire to its full length. See Figure 7 - Shield Pull-Out Method and Figure 8 -
Shield Pull-Out Method.

10) Cut the shield ground wire to a maximum length of 2.0 inches.

11) Protect shield breakout area using M23053/5 sleeving.

64-000023 Page 29 of 123

Figure 8 - Shield Pull-Out Method

D. Backshell Termination (M85049/19 Type)

1) Attach backshell body to connector, properly clocking backshell and tighten

backshell coupling ring slightly beyond hand tight torque if required. See
Figure 9 - Shield Routing ADAHRS Connector.

2) Dress wires in backshell body and position cover. Do not pinch wires
between backshell body and cover.

3) Route braid pigtails back over backshell body EMI cone and fold braid
pigtails evenly over the taper of the EMI cone. Trim braid pigtails to prevent
braid from lying on threads. Do not let braid ends cut from shield, fall into
connector.

4) Slide rear EMI cone over the front EMI cone, wedging the shield pigtails
between the two tapered surfaces.

64-000023 Page 30 of 123

ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

5) Tighten backshell strain relief to hold strands securely. During the tightening
operations, the shield pigtails may move slightly. This is acceptable as long
as the pigtails do not lie on top of each other.

Figure 9 - Shield Routing ADAHRS Connector

E. Attaching a Ring Lug to Shield Braid (optional)

A crimp-on or solder-on ring lug may be used for shield ground termination.
Prepare shield by using pull-out method if dedicated shield braid is not used.
Attach lug to shield using the crimping tools designed for the lug used. Ensure
adequate connection strength by subjecting lug to a light pull test while checking for
movement or looseness.

B. Pre-mod Avionics Systems Check

1) Perform a pre-modification avionics system check of all interfaced

equipment. Verify that all systems are functioning properly in accordance
with the applicable aircraft maintenance manuals. If any discrepancies are
noted, generate the appropriate paper work and record these discrepancies.

2) Turn master switch and all equipment in the aircraft off. Remove power
from aircraft.

3) Ground aircraft.

4) Open all access locations as required for installation of the ADAHRS.

C. Pre-mod Pitot/Static Leak Test

1) Perform a pre-maintenance static leak test in accordance with FAR 43,

Appendix E (a) (2) or applicable aircraft maintenance manuals and record
the results. In the event of excessive leakage, leaks must be found and
corrected prior to continuing the installation. Note results below.

Static leak rate_____________FPM at______________FT.

2) Perform a pre-maintenance pitot leak test in accordance with applicable

aircraft maintenance manuals and record the results. Note results below.

Pitot leak rate____________KTS per min. at__________KIAS.

D. ADAHRS Module – Installation

WARNING: Misalignment of the ADAHRS module will cause pitch rate errors to be
introduced during rolls.

NOTES:

1) The ADAHRS module should be located as close to the vehicle’s center of

gravity as practical. Refer to Figure 10 - ADAHRS and MSU General
Locations and Figure 11 - ADAHRS and MSU General Locations for general
mounting locations of the ADAHRS and MSU. The location must be able to
structurally support the weight of the ADAHRS module and mounting
hardware. Since the ADAHRS utilizes a remote MSU and is not susceptible
to magnetic interference, mounting considerations should focus on a rigid
and well aligned installation.

2) A dry, temperature-stable location should be considered, with enough

distance from motors, pulse generating equipment, relays and cables

64-000023 Page 32 of 123

ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

carrying high DC or AC current, to avoid interference with low level signals

of the OAT probe.

3) The ADAHRS module must not be lower than the lowest point in the Pitot
and Static system, to reduce the chances of collecting moisture or water in
it. If the ADAHRS module cannot be located above the lowest point in the
Pitot and Static system, then a water trap and drain must be installed at the
lowest point. Additional field approval and documentation in the Instruction
for Continued Airworthiness must be made to inform maintenance personnel
of the location and maintenance of the location and maintenance
requirements of the new drain.

4) Installation of the ADAHRS module shelf should not change the primary
structure of the airframe. Any changes to the primary structure will require
additional FAA approval.

5) The pitot/static port face of the ADAHRS module must be aligned parallel or
perpendicular to the center line of the aircraft to within ± 0.5º for fixed wing
normal category aircraft and for rotorcraft. Misalignment will cause pitch
rate errors to be introduced during rolls.

6) The ADAHRS module may be mounted upside-down or on an incline. The

leveling alignment procedure (see Chapter 5) will electronically level the
ADAHRS module.

7) The ADAHRS module should be rigidly mounted to a portion of the frame

that has sufficient stiffness (with the ADAHRS module installed). The
location must be able to structurally support the weight of the ADAHRS
module and mounting hardware.

8) Use of an existing avionics shelf located in an unoccupied area of the

(avionics equipment bay, aft accessory shelf, etc.) is preferred. If an
existing shelf is used, ensure the additional weight of the equipment does
not overload the placarded weight limit of the shelf.

9) New shelving may require separate FAA approval. Additional requirements

are as follows:

• Ensure equipment, shelving, and mounts do not interfere with control

cables.
• Do not attach shelving or mounts to pressurized bulkheads. In
unpressurized aircraft, attachment to existing airframe support
structures using existing holes is acceptable.
• Do not attach shelving or mounts to primary structure elements when
installed in a pressurized aircraft.
• When attaching to existing structure, use hole-filling fasteners (rivets,
hilocks, appropriately sized screws with washer and nuts, etc.).
• Inserts must be used if shelving is constructed with honeycomb
material.

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

• Cantilever supports require gusseting.

• If existing structure is less than 0.050 inches, radius blocks or
doublers may be required for additional strength.
• Do not block venting or intake areas of other equipment,
decompression vents, or cargo fire detection systems.

10) Upon determination of a suitable existing shelf, or completion of a new

equipment shelf, a static load test may be performed per AC 43.13-2a,
Chapter 1 to determine proper load bearing of the equipment. Higher load
factors may be required depending on the type of aircraft. Consult a
Structural DER if unsure of the load values required.

11) An optional method of determining proper load bearing of the ADAHRS shelf
may be through structural analysis and structural DER approval.

Fabricate a simple test jig that will be used to measure static test loads as shown in
Table 11 – ADAHRS Module Mounting Plate Structure Test.

NOTE: The ADAHRS module mounting shelf should be installed for the static load
test, but is not necessary as long as the mounting holes for the shelf are
used for the tests.

For aircraft operating in Normal FAR 23 (CAR 3), Normal FAR 27 (CAR 6), or
Normal FAR 29 (CAR 7) category, perform a static load test per AC 43.13-2A,
Chapter 1, §2 and §3 to determine proper load bearing and security of the
equipment. Perform the tests at the center of gravity of the ADAHRS module
installation for three seconds and note the results in Ground Functional Test
(Chapter 5, section Error! Reference source not found.). An acceptable
installation will show no signs of permanent deformation after three seconds of
applied pressure in all directions of pull.

If required, drill mounting holes in the shelf using the ADAHRS module as a
template. Secure the shelf and support structure to the airframe structure.

Secure the ADAHRS module to the mounting structure. The ADAHRS module
must be positioned on the mounting shelf so that the pitot/static port face of the unit
is aligned parallel or perpendicular to the center line of the aircraft to within ± 0.5º
for fixed wing normal category aircraft or rotorcraft.

Document the location of the ADAHRS module in the appropriate Instructions for
Continued Airworthiness for the aircraft STC.

F. ADAHRS Pitot/Static Lines - Installation

WARNING: Both Pitot and Static pressure lines must slope down as they move
away from the ADAHRS module ports such that moisture does not
collect at the ADAHRS module ports.

NOTES:

64-000023 Page 37 of 123

ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

1) Routing of Pitot and Static lines should be as direct and short as possible.

2) Utilize tubing and fittings consistent with existing Pitot/Static system

hardware.

3) Cut the existing aircraft Pitot and Static lines at the selected location
between the alternate source valve and the static instrumentation
and install a tee in the Pitot and Static lines.

4) Route new Pitot and Static lines from the tees to the ADAHRS
module.

Form the Pitot and Static lines so they slope down as they move away from
the ADAHRS module ports such that moisture does not collect at the
ADAHRS module ports.

Assemble appropriate fittings that match the type installed in the aircraft to
each end of the newly formed Pitot and Static lines.

Connect and secure the Pitot and Static lines to the tees and the ADAHRS
module.

Secure ADAHRS module Pitot and Static lines to the airframe.

G. MSU – Installation

WARNING: Use non-ferrous hardware for mounting the MSU. Screws, washers,
nuts, and nut plates should be made out brass or equivalent to prevent
heading errors in the MSU.

NOTES:

1) The MSU should be mounted in a location that is far as possible from hard
and soft magnetic materials, current carrying wiring, baggage compartments
or areas that may be subjected to magnetic fields during aircraft storage or
maintenance. Refer to Figure 10 - ADAHRS and MSU General Locations
and Figure 11 - ADAHRS and MSU General Locations for general mounting
locations of the ADAHRS and MSU. The MSU should NOT be mounted
using viscoelastic or other vibration isolation mounts.

2) A dry, temperature-stable location should be considered, with enough

distance from motors, pulse generating equipment, relays and cables
carrying high DC or AC current, to avoid interference with external magnetic
flux generators.

64-000023 Page 38 of 123

ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

3) Installation of the MSU shelf should not change the primary structure of the
airframe. Any changes to the primary structure will require additional FAA
approval.

4) Ferromagnetic components that are less than 3 feet from the MSU should
be demagnetized to remove residual magnetism prior to alignment.

5) The MSU should be rigidly mounted to a portion of the airframe that has
sufficient stiffness (with the MSU unit installed). The location must be able
to structurally support the weight of the MSU and mounting hardware.

6) New shelving may require separate FAA approval.

• Inserts must be used if shelving is constructed with honeycomb
material.
• Cantilever supports require gusseting.
• If existing structure is less than 0.050 inches, radius blocks or
doublers may be required for additional strength.
• Do not block venting or intake areas of other equipment,
decompression vents, or cargo fire detection systems.

7) Upon determination of a suitable existing shelf, or completion of a new

equipment shelf, a static load test may be performed per AC43.13-2a,
Chapter 1, to determine proper load bearing of the equipment. Higher load
factors may be required depending on the type of aircraft. Consult a
Structural DER if unsure of the load values required.

8) The MSU should be parallel to the airframe’s centerline within ±0.5º. The
arrow on the bottom of the MSU should point in the direction of flight to
within ±0.5º. Refer to Figure 3 - MSU. North alignment and installation
alignment procedures are detailed in the Chapter 5.

9) Particular attention should be given to wing tip MSU mounting as wing tip
deflection results in a misalignment between the MSU and the airframe.

10) Directions are described in the pilot’s frame of reference with the MSU
mounted in the direction of flight. The X axis is positive to the pilot’s right,
the Y axis is positive in the forward direction of flight and the Z axis is
positive up vertically. Up, right and clockwise are positive directions of
64-000023 Page 39 of 123
ADAHRS INSTALLATION MANUAL

CHAPTER 2 – SYSTEM INSTALLATION

rotations. Pitch up is a positive rotation about the X axis. Yaw right is a

positive rotation about the Z axis and right wing down roll is a positive
rotation about the Y axis.

The MSU should not be mounted within 3 feet of any devices that can induce a
variable magnetic field. Acceptable areas can include an existing avionics shelf
located in an unoccupied area of a wingtip, base of the vertical stabilizer, or areas
where other such devices are mounted. Refer to Figure 10 - ADAHRS and MSU
General Locations and Figure 11 - ADAHRS and MSU General Locations for MSU
general locations. If an existing shelf is used, ensure the additional weight of the
equipment does not overload the placarded weight limit of the shelf. Consult the
airframe manufacturers Illustrated Parts Manual or Maintenance Manual for
additional details on acceptable mounting locations.

The MSU must be mounted in an area isolated from wiring that can generate
significant or variable magnetic fields during flight. These wires include:

• Battery wires
• Strobe wires
• Autopilot control wires
• Position light wires
• De-ice boot wires
• Air conditioning power wires
• HF control wires

The MSU should be mounted on a bracket that is rigid to the airframe to alleviate
any potential vibration errors induced by aircraft movement.

The mounting bracket must allow the MSU to be within ±45º of level in the pitch and
roll axis when the aircraft is leveled for weight and balance.

Ensure there is at least three inches of clearance above and two inches of
clearance below the mounting shelf to allow the MSU adequate freedom of
movement during installation, removal and alignment.

The MSU is designed to be installed onto an existing Bendix/King KMT-112 flux

detector mount. If an existing mount is not available on the airframe, consult the
airframe manufacturers Illustrated Parts Manual or Maintenance Manual for
mounting details, parts list or kits. Additional details may be obtained by contacting
the airframe manufacturer.

If an existing mount is not available, or the airframe manufacturer does not provide
information or parts to install a bracket for the MSU, one can be locally fabricated
using the following guidelines.

An optional method of installation and approval may be through structural analysis

and DER approval.

K. ADAHRS Electrical Wiring – Installation

NOTES:

1) A signal reference ground line should be connected between the MSU and
the ADAHRS module. This ground should be part of the MSU
communication cable.

2) Cable shields must be terminated at the connector back shell. Since the
MSU ground pins are not designed for low impedance at very high
frequencies, cable shields should NOT be terminated to a ground pin.

3) Devices communicating to the ADAHRS module should have their

communication ground pins connected to the ADAHRS module ground.

4) Use a shielded two wire interface for the OAT Probe. To maintain accuracy,
the OAT Probe cable should be less than 40 feet when using 22 gauge wire.

The MSU interfaces to the ADAHRS module via RS-422 data lines A and B. Power
to the MSU shall be provided by the same source as that of the ADAHRS module.

Power and ground wires to be twisted not less than 2 turns per inch.

Wiring Installation

NOTES:

1) The ADAHRS wiring harness interfaces with the IDU, MSU and the OAT
probe and a Fast Slave ground switch. There are several IDU wiring and
connector configurations, therefore wiring termination to the IDU will not be
addressed in this manual. Refer to the EFIS Installation Manual for
termination of the ADAHRS wires to the IDU connector.

2) Refer to Chapter 4, Figure 35 - ADAHRS Single Bus Schematic or Figure 36

- ADAHRS Multi-Bus Schematic to assist with the following wiring
instructions for EFIS equipped aircraft.

ADAHRS #2, connector J1, pin 16 and Fast Slave switch S1 using only one Fast
Slave switch S1 for ADAHRS #1 and #2.

L. OAT Probe Connector - Assembly

NOTES:

1) The OAT Probe electrical connector provides the interfaces between the
OAT Probe and the wiring. A molded rubber Boot provides strain relief for
the cable and moisture resistance for the contacts. See Figure 19 - OAT
Probe Connector Assembly.

Figure 19 - OAT Probe Connector Assembly

2) The electrical interface consists of two electrical contacts. The contacts are
gold plated and can be either crimped or solder terminated to the wire.
Crimping is preferred over soldering.

3) The cable used consists of a two conductor 22 twisted and shielded pair.
The recommended cable type is MIL-C-27500/22TG2T14 (22 gauge).

The OAT Probe contains a precision RTD temperature sensor whose resistance
varies with temperature. The resistance of the wire between the OAT Probe and
the ADAHRS module must be limited to a maximum of 1000 milliohms in order to
64-000023 Page 47 of 123

8.3 ADAHRS Compass Swing Procedure

Performed after leveling and is required anytime the ADAHRS

or MSU is replaced. Compensates the MSU for Hard and Soft
Iron effects. Requires two complete revolutions of the aircraft in
a magnetically quiet environment (i.e., compass rose). This
function computes the soft iron correction matrix and the hard
iron correction vector for the MSU by measuring MSU
magnetometer readings during a clockwise and
counterclockwise turn of the aircraft. The resulting matrix and
vector are stored in the AHRS Calibration EEPROM and
validated by a CRC32.

NOTE: The compass swing function must be performed with all

aircraft systems in “FLIGHT” mode except for the ADAHRS that
is in ground mode to do the function.

8.4 ADAHRS Compass Alignment Procedures

Performed after the ADAHRS Compass swing to detect any

residual compass errors and load offsets into the AHRS to
compensate for those errors. This function computes the offset
differences between measured headings (after soft and hard
iron corrections) and cardinal headings (North, East, South, and
West) reported by the user to create alignment offsets used as
a final correction to reported magnetic headings. It requires
accurate alignment to cardinal heading in a magnetically quiet
environment (i.e., compass rose). The resulting offset
differences are stored in the AHRS Calibration EEPROM and
validated by a CRC32. This procedure is required if the
ADAHRS or MSU is replaced.

STEP DESCRIPTION PASS FAIL

3. FLIGHT TEST PROCEDURE:

NOTE: An appropriately rated pilot for the type of aircraft must

perform the following flight tests. No persons other than
required flight crew members may be on the aircraft
during the flight test.

NOTE: All flight tests will be performed in day VFR conditions

away from traffic as needed.

NOTE: The following tests are performed to verify that the

standby instruments provide the same information as
displayed on the connected system attitude display (if
available) within acceptable limits of the pilot. If the test
is not acceptable, the installer must determine if the
standby instrument or the connected system (if
connected) is providing erroneous information and
make corrective action as required.

NOTE: Typically the waterline symbol should be 0º to 2º-3º

above the horizon line in straight and level flight.

NOTE: Mark N/A for items that are not applicable.

3.1 After installation is complete and while flight testing the aircraft,
note the displayed attitude from the connected system (if
available) while in level flight. If the horizon line is shown too
high, the ADAHRS module must be tilted “nose up” a
corresponding amount to bring the horizon line on the
connected system attitude display (if available) to the center of
the indicator. Excessive offset of the horizon line on the “PFD”
while in level flight may be caused by ADAHRS mounting errors
or aircraft flight characteristics. Pitch offsets may be applied to
correct this error (see Step 8.2 in Chapter 5).

NOTE: If during the flight test, pitch and roll characteristics

require pitch and roll errors are to be corrected, new pitch and
roll values must be input in the ADAHRS Leveling Function
Procedures, Step 8.2. Compass Swing Function, Step 8.3, and
Compass Alignment Function, paragraph, Step 8.4 must be
repeated followed by another flight test.

3.2 If the connected system attitude display (if available) shows a

slight bank when the aircraft is in level flight, roll offsets may be
required to correct this error (see Step 8.2 in Chapter 5).
Typically, the horizon line of the connected system attitude
display (if available) should be near the center of the display
when the aircraft is loaded with its typical payload. Once set, a
discernable difference in aircraft attitude will be noticed
throughout the range of airspeed, weight and angle of attack.

2. DISPLAY ADAHRS VALUES AND STATUS FLAGS

The Display ADAHRS Values and Status Flags function in the ADAHRS Maintenance Utility
Software contains information that can be used for troubleshooting purposes. The Display
ADAHRS Values and Status Flags page can be divided into 7 sections (see Figure 38 -
Display ADAHRS Values and Status Flags Page).

The first section provides raw data of the AHRS module in the ADAHRS. The second
section provides raw data of the MSU. The third section provides raw data from the ADC
module in the ADAHRS. The fourth, fifth, and sixth sections provide the alignment matrix
generated during the Compass Swing and Compass Alignment functions. The seventh
section provides the ADAHRS options, the CRC value, and a running sample number.

The information contained on this page can be stored by selecting the “File” menu and
either copying the data into a word document or e-mail, or saving the data as a picture file
which can be attached to an e-mail. Contact CAIS Product Support for further assistance.

CAUTION: ADAHRS and MSU must be operational for 10 minutes before using the Display
ADAHRS Values and Status Flags page for troubleshooting. Data may be
unreliable during the warm-up time of the ADAHRS and MSU.

ADAHRS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

CHAPTER 6 – FLIGHT FUNCTIONAL TEST

Figure 38 - Display ADAHRS Values and Status Flags Page

A. AHRS Section

The AHRS section contains the AHRS module Hardware Status, AHRS module
Data Status, AHRS module Software version, X-Y-Z rate sensors, and X-Y-Z
accelerometers. The following values represent a valid AHRS module:
AHRS Hdwr Stat = 0x00
AHRS Data Stat = 0x80
X, Y, and Z-axis rate sensors = less than 0.10º/s
One accelerometer (usually Z-axis) = close to 1.000G.

If the AHRS Hdwr Stat has a value other than 0x00, there is a hardware failure in
the AHRS module of the ADAHRS. Contact CAIS Product Support for repair.

If the AHRS Data Stat has a value other than 0x80, there is a data failure from the
rate or accelerometer sensors. Contact CAIS Product Support for repair.

If the X, Y, or Z-axis rate sensors are excessively noise (greater than 0.2º/s), there
may be a failure of a rate sensor or ADAHRS is mounted on a flexible bracket.
Verify ADAHRS installation.

64-000023 Page 119 of 123

ADAHRS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

CHAPTER 6 – FLIGHT FUNCTIONAL TEST

If none of the X, Y, of Z-axis accelerometers display near 1G, the ADAHRS may not
be mounted flat, the ADAHRS may not have successfully performed the ADAHRS
Leveling function, or a failure of an accelerometer. Verify ADAHRS installation and
alignment.

B. MSU Section

The MSU section contains the MSU Hardware Status, MSU Data Status, MSU
Software version, X-Y-Z magnetometers, and X-Y accelerometers. The X and Y-
axis accelerometers are used during the ADAHRS Leveling, ADAHRS Compass
Swing, and ADAHRS Compass Alignment functions only. The following values
represent a valid MSU:
MSU Hdwr Stat = 0x00
MSU Data Stat = 0x80
X and Y-axis Accelerometers are less than 0.05G

If the MSU Hdwr Stat has a value other than 0x00, there is a hardware failure in the
MSU. Contact CAIS Product Support for repair.

If the MSU Data Stat has a value other than 0x80, there is a data failure from the
magnetometer or accelerometer sensors. Contact CAIS Product Support for repair.

The X, Y, and Z-axis magnetometers (Fld X, Fld Y, Fld Z) will vary in numbers
depending on the location of the aircraft.

The X and Y-axis accelerometers should display less than 0.02G if the MSU is
mounted parallel to the aircraft waterline.

C. ADC Section

The ADC section contains the ADC module Hardware Status, ADC module Data
Status, ADC module Software version, Altitude Correction, raw Pressure Altitude,
Indicated Airspeed Correction, and Indicated Airspeed. The following values
represent a valid ADC module:
ADC Hdwr Stat = 0x00
ADC Data Stat = 0x80

If the ADC Hdwr Stat has a value other than 0x00, there is a hardware failure in the
ADC module. Contact CAIS Product Support for repair.

If the ADC Data Stat has a value other than 0x80, there is a data failure from the
Pitot, Static, or OAT sensors. Contact CAIS Product Support for repair.

CHAPTER 6 – FLIGHT FUNCTIONAL TEST

The Altitude Correction (Alt Corr) value is an offset applied to the internal output of
the altitude pressure transducer to correct for 0 feet MSL. A value of “0” means that
this parameter is invalid. Contact CAIS Product Support for repair.

The Pressure Altitude (Press Alt) value is the altitude reported on ARINC429 Label
203 with the Alt Corr value applied.

The Indicated Airspeed Correction (IAS Corr) value is an offset applied to the
internal output of the airspeed pressure transducer to correct for 0 KIAS. A value of
“0” means that this parameter is invalid. Contact CAIS Product Support for repair.

The Indicated Airspeed (IAS) is the output value with the IAS Corr value applied.

D. Alignment Matrix Section

The alignment matrix section is divided into 5 subsections:

AHRS Alignment;
MSU Alignment;
MSU Soft Iron;
MSU Hard Iron; and
Offset.

The ARHS alignment matrix is a group of numbers that represent the orientation of
the ADAHRS in the airframe. The values have a range from -1.0 to +0.99997 and
represent the integrity of the ARHS alignment. One value near -1.0 or +1.0 should
be located in each column and each of the three rows should only have one
occurrence near ±1.0. In the example above, a value near +1.0 is displayed on the
top-left, middle, and bottom-right columns in the AHRS Alignment Matrix group.
This represents a valid alignment.

The MSU alignment matrix is a group of numbers that represent the orientation of
the MSU in the airframe. The values have a range from -1.0 to +0.99997 and
represent the integrity of the MSU alignment. One value near -1.0 or +1.0 should
be located in each column and each of the three rows should only have one
occurrence near ±1.0. In the example above, a value near +1.0 is displayed on the
top-left, middle, and bottom-right columns in the MSU Alignment Matrix group. This
represents a valid alignment.

64-000023 Page 121 of 123

ADAHRS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

CHAPTER 6 – FLIGHT FUNCTIONAL TEST

The MSU soft iron matrix is a group of numbers that represent the soft iron
correction values for the magnetic table stored in the ADAHRS. The values have a
range from -2.0 to +1.99933 and represent the integrity of the soft iron alignment.
One value above -1.0 or +1.0 should be located in each column and each of the
three rows should only have one occurrence above ±1.0. In the example above, a
value above +1.0 is displayed on the top-left, middle, and bottom-right columns in
the MSU Soft Iron Matrix group. This represents a valid alignment.

The MSU hard iron vectors are values applied to the MSU output prior to calculating
the soft iron matrix.

The offsets are corrections calculated during the ADAHRS Compass Alignment
Procedure and can correct for aircraft induced errors up to ±20.0 degrees for each
cardinal heading. These values should be as close to 0 degrees as possible.
Additionally, the difference between these values should not be greater than 5
degrees. High offset numbers (greater than ±5.0 degrees) or a large offset value
spread could be the result of an excessively noisy magnetic environment near the
MSU or installation errors.

E. Airframe Section

The airframe section contains the airframe configuration, memory CRC, and a
sample number. The airframe configuration (Airframe Config) is a number that
represents the filter values, SDI bit, and ADC data in the Options function of the
ADAHRS Alignment program. The Calibration CRC is a number generated by all of
the data that is stored in the ADAHRS memory after completion of alignment. This
value is not used of the stand-alone ADAHRS. The Sample Number (Sample No)
is an incrementing number that is updated 25 times per second. If this number is
always “0” or does not increment, communication has been lost between the
ADAHRS and the laptop computer.

3. OAT PROBE TROUBLESHOOTING

To determine if the OAT probe is functioning correctly check the resistance of the OAT
probe at each temperature listed in Table 31 - OAT Probe Test. Ensure the measured
resistances are as specified in Table 31 - OAT Probe Test.

If the OAT probe pins checks open or if there is a short between the pins or a short
between the pin(s) to case the OAT probe is faulty.
