(25th Foot)
Plate D, page 24

THIS famous Scottish regiment dates from 1689, being raised in

Ed inbu rgh on March 19 of that year, it is said to have recruited up to
1,000 men in fo ur hours. Within a few months of being raised it took
part in the celebrated action at the Pass of Killiecrankie. In 1695 it
was at the seige of Namur and lost no less than 20 officers and 500

men by the explosion of o ne of the enemy mines. The regiment was

constantly on service in Europe, and at Gibraltar in 1732 it successfully
outlasted a four months ' seige by a Sp a n is h force of 20,000 men. One
battle honour "Minden" proves the great valour of the regiment. Prince
Ferdinand of Brunswick who commanded the Allied army said on
revisiting the site years afterwards, "It was here that the British Army
gained immortal g lory . "
In 1793 the regiment was transferred to the sea service to act as
Marines and took part in Lord Howe's victory over the French on June
1, 1794. During the 19th century service in Holland, Africa, Canada,
Afghanistan, Ind ia and South Africa brou g h t more honours to the regiment
The d ress had up till 1881 been that of a line regiment, always a red
coat with yellow facings changed to blue after 1805 when the regiment
received the title of The King's Own Borderers. From 1881 the Scottish
doublet has been worn with tartan trews. At first the trews were of
Universal tartan which was changed for the Leslie tartan in 189 8 .
The red waistcoat and yellow breeches o f the officer i n Fig D2 are
shown in a series of contemporary paintings as is the Iight infantry
head-dress shown in Figs D6 and D7. The shako shown in Fig D8
was worn from 1800-12 and that in Fig D9 from 1812-1816. The light
company man of 1842, Fig D 10, w e a r s the shako of 1829-1842; the
ball on this shako replaced the plume in 1835.
