“Musmos na Pag-ibig: The Causes and The Effects of Engaging in Early Romantic Relationship on
Chapter 1
Introduction
Background of the study
Society plays a big role in shaping and developing one's nature, from behavior to the way of living. To
adapt in the environment, an individual must undergo changes required for survival. From generation to
generation, each serves as a pathway and transition for another evolution. The youth is affected by these
alterations. Due to many influences in the surrounding, good or bad, young people were programmed to
follow their examples. One of the notorious influences on the youth is engaging in early romantic
relationships.
conflicts regarding their social growth. The American Psychological Association defines social growth as a
development of an individual's intellect and the ability to deal with others. The way they view the world
changes as they encounter different experiences in life. Adolescence is a period in life wherein children are
in a process of maturity and adulthood (Cleveland Clinic, 2023), having connection and socializing at this
time is crucial. On the other hand, nothing is permanent in this world, the result of being involved in an
early romantic relationship can induce an indelible impact on the development of an individual.
John Donne said "No man is an Island '', there is a connection between all humankind.
Globalization has made the world more connected and interdependent (National Geographic, n.d.). Liberal

Wisevoter (2023). Associating in romantic relationships at an early age is part of their norm. However, not
all countries in the world promote liberalism. There are conservative countries that hold traditional values
relevant. Chutima Roomruangwong and C. Epperson (2012) said that Asians, in general, are more
conservative than individuals from Western countries. Asians preserve their beliefs, values, morals,
standards and keep them frozen in time. Regardless of how, adolescents are characterized with curiosity
(Pickhardt Ph. D., 2013). Entering romantic relationships are linked to the way teenagers explore identity,
independence, privacy and self-image (Raising Children Network, updated on 2023, October 2).
In the Philippines, dating comes in stages, starting with courtship (Chara Scroope, 2017). A man
will try to prove his worth to another by courting. If the woman accepts the suitor, the relationship begins.
In an article written by Irish Torres (2019, July 10), there are shifts in terms of practices among Filipinos.
Urban areas in the Philippines are becoming less conservative when it comes to dating customs as they are
influenced by the West (Scroope, 2017). Filipino youth are engrossed with the trends they learn in the
society. Vicente Aldanese (2010, February 1) said that peer pressure can lead teens to seek new activities.
These activities may be related to their decisions, relationships or hobbies. Filipino adolescents engage in
romantic relationships due to the influences from the environment, nonetheless the Philippines is a country
that values religion (J. Canete, 2021), this act violates the norm upheld by Filipinos.
shared by Puja Mondal (n.d.), it states that social interaction in rural areas is lower compared to urban
areas, but the interaction level is more stable and continuous, the relationships are intimate. It was observed
that people who engage in romantic relationships are getting younger and younger as days pass by
(Antiquera, M. et al., n.d.). Lopez, despite being a town in the province, shows potential to be a greater
community. However, the youth who are supposed to lead the municipality in the future engage in early
romantic relationships that can affect their development and social well-being.

The general problem of the research is to identify what causes adolescents to engage in early
romantic relationships and their effects on the social growth of selected G-11 HE-LBR.
1.) What is the demographic profile of the selected respondents from G-11 HE-LBR?
•Age
•Gender
•Religion
3.) How does entering romantic relationships act on the social growth of the selected respondents from
•Socializing?
4.) What are the implications of the research in the social development of an adolescent individual?
5.) What could be done to improve the social growth of adolescents in the community who are prone to
The aim of the research is to identify the root cause of entering early romantic relationships
among selected adolescents of Grade 11 HE-LBR and their impacts on the social growth of young
individuals. Therefore, the scope of the study is limited only in one municipality, namely Lopez, Quezon.
The research will be conducted inside the grounds of Lopez National Comprehensive High School. The
respondents of this study will be derived and selected from a section in Grade 11 Senior high.
The research is delimited to grade 11 HE-LBR adolescents ranging from 15-19 years old who
have an experience when it comes to engaging in romantic relationships. Adolescents who are included in
the age limit but do not have involvement in romantic relationships are excluded from the study. On the
other hand, people whose ages are 14 and below or 20 and above that participated in romantic relationship
The Youth - as Dr. Jose Rizal had said, "Youth is the hope of the Nation". The study will serve as a tool of
awareness for young people who are engaging in romantic relationships and those who are planning to do
so. Upon reading the research, they will come into realization and be conscious of their decisions regarding
romantic relationships. Adolescents will focus on developing and improving their social capabilities.
Parents/Guardians - as the first and most important agent of socialization that hones and shapes an
individual's morals and personality, parents/guardians will know the status of their children's social life,
especially in romance. With this research, they will maintain a healthy monitor on their children as well as
Teachers - when children go to school, teachers become their "Second Parents''. By reading the research,
teachers will develop new teaching methods to enhance the social knowledge and potential of young
people. Teachers will also gain information that may relate to their students and educate them of the
impacts brought by engaging in early romantic relationships. Which will help in controlling their actions.
Community/Society - the study will help the community and the society to have a better understanding
regarding the hinders that adolescents encounter as they engage in romantic relationships. Instead of
discriminating against them, the community/society must protect the youth and assist them with their social
development. After all, the youth are the ones holding the future of the society.

Review of Related Literature and Studies
Foreign Literature
Arnet (n.d.) stated that late adolescence is the stage wherein teenagers undergo a total and social
independence. In addition, the adolescent period is a time for curiosity to arise among young people and
they start to explore. They tend to search for a partner because of their interest that later leads to a romantic
relationship. Although, this kind of relationship does not conclude that the love affair is pleasant and
intense. It is just one of their ways to try to fit in the world with their inquisitive mind. Questions about life
are significant during the teenage stage, as adolescents seek their place in the society. This quest consists of
Wyndol Furman, it stated that understanding the essence of teenage dating means that adolescence is a
phase of roiling emotional caldron which is fueled by the influences in the surrounding. These Influences
include parents, peer group, or school and the result of these combinations is the opposite sex. He also
added that the lack of social skill and emotional control among adolescents can make a relationship
Lifespan developmental theorist Erik Erikson (1968) viewed crushes and youthful romances as
significant patrons for adolescents to understand self-concept and form an identity. He described teenage
when ‘falling in love’ as a form of self-development rather than true intimacy. (As cited by Moore, S.

Local Literature
Michael L. Tan (2011, September 27) states that Filipinos, even the liberal ones, are not
comfortable with the issue of sexuality education. Children at an age of six already feel attraction that later
develops to the so-called Puppy Love. Puppy Love is innocent and inconsequential, but there are cases
when children are put at risk. Adolescents are dealing with gender and sexuality because sexual orientation
starts to manifest at this phase, the physical and emotional changes begin at this stage of life. With the right
environment and healthy relationships, young people will have happy memories ahead.
On the other hand, according to Christopher Ryan Maboloc (2017, January 24), it is social media
that connects young people to others on the internet. It becomes a medium in developing relationships.
Reality unfolds that relationships online are superficial at times. Young couples nowadays who engage in
romantic relationships desire for everyone to know about their status. However, as one grows older, he or
she realizes that there are better things in the world and their desire starts to falter.
According to Ujano- Batangan, M. (2012) adolescence is known to be the time of extensive and
unfamiliar changes that happen in various sides of human growth and development. It is at the period of
adolescence when Filipino males and females tend to explore intimate and sexual relationships. Moreover,
this period in life is a critical time for adolescents to experiment and take risks (p.170).
Foreign Study
In a study conducted by Quatman et al. (2001), researchers examined the relationship between dating
status and academic achievement, academic motivation , depression and self-esteem among high school
students in California. Results showed the relation between engaging in romantic relationships and a lower
academic performance. The frequency of dating and commitment level are the factors that define a

person is at the bottom of the scale. (As cited by Cartano, A. M., n.d.)
In a study by Honghao, Jin, et al. (2021, December 21) regarding The Influence of Adolescents’
Romantic Relationship on Individual Development, it was found that the academic performance of
adolescents’ who participate in romantic relationship is lower and the risk of having negative emotions is
lower compared to others of the same age. The romantic relationship gives an opportunity in learning
intimate relationships and building an optimistic self-concept, and therefore, it has a positive effect on the
Zhi Hong Li, et al. (2010, April) studied the Adolescent romantic relationships in China and Canada:
A cross-national comparison. It compared the romantic involvement of Chinese and Canadian adolescents
as well as connection with parental relationship and friendship. Results showed that Chinese adolescents
were less likely to have any form of romantic relationship, displayed lower levels of romantic experience
and had fewer romantic relationships. Though friendship is more intimate in Canada, parental relationships
are closer in China. Among Chinese adolescents, parents are also connected with romantic experiences in a
negative outcome.
Local Study
Bernales, A. J. & Colonia, F. (2011, October) studied The Effects of Romantic Relationships on the
Academic Performance of University of the Philippines – Cebu College Students (A.Y. 2011-2012). The
conclusion states that students who are involved in romantic relationships who experience higher levels of
anxiety while dating would indicate a great possibility that it would offer negative effects on their academic
performance. Researchers also found out that respondents' level of motivation as students, has a slight
relation with the academic performance. It implies that it doesn't necessarily affect academic performance
Mitchel Mapalad (2014) studied the Satisfaction in Romantic Relationship among Adolescents, it was
conducted to discover whether or not the profile and involvement in romantic relationships among
adolescents are associated. Fifty high school students of Batangas National High School were surveyed.
The result showed that adolescents are satisfied with their romantic relationships. The relation between the
length of the romantic relationship and the level of satisfaction was found to be positive.
Balagosa, A. et al. (2019) conducted a research about the Impact of Romantic Relationship to the
Academic Performance of Grade 12 ABM Students in Bestlink College of the Philippines, the results of
the study revealed that romantic relationship has an effect on the academic performance of Grade 12 ABM
students in terms of assignment, quizzes, performance tasks and school attendance. The result
demonstrated the call for parents’ and teachers’ guidance when engaging in romantic relationships at an
early age. The students must balance time between academics and romance, focusing on academic goals
Conceptual Framework
The researcher has observed that the community nowadays is becoming filled with young people
who engage in romantic relationships. It is a concern of their social well-being, the study will be
conducted to know the relation between the causes of engaging in romantic relationships and the effect on
social growth of an adolescent individual. Also, to find ways that may help in solving the issue.
The conceptual framework that was used in the study is the Input-Process-Output model. The
research uses this method to easily show the analysis of the research. The paradigm is shown below. The
input consists of the Statement of the problem found in this study. The process, on the other hand, includes
the data gathering procedure or the instrument to be used while collecting information. The study will use a

Methodology
This chapter presents the methods and techniques necessary to accomplish the research. Including
the research design and type, population and sample, research locale, and the instrument used in data
gathering procedure.
The research will use a qualitative design that gathers non-numerical data, specifically case study
type. This design relies on human understanding and interpretation on analyzing data. In addition to this,
qualitative research embodies visual sense in terms of words, meanings and description of an event.
According to Yin, as cited by Crowe, S. et al., (2011), case studies can be used to explain, describe,
elaborate or explore phenomena in daily contexts in which they occur. A case study approach lends itself
properly in capturing information on more explanatory questions such as ‘how, what and why’.
The population frame of the study includes the grade 11 HE-LBR students of Lopez National
Comprehensive High School. The sample for the research are selected adolescents of Grade 11 HE-LBR
who have knowledge about the topic. The research will use a non-probability sampling technique, it does
The type of non-probability sampling to be used in the study is Purposive Sampling. This type
of sampling selects respondents according to the goal of the researcher. It is also known as
“JudgementalSampling”, the reason for this is because researchers rely solely on their own judgment when
identifying individuals, cases, or events that can provide best information to achieve the study’s objective
(Kassiani Nikolopoulou 2022, August 12). It is also commonly used in Qualitative research and
mixed-methods research. Since the study will revolve around G-11 HE-LBR adolescents who have
experience in romantic relationships, this type of sampling is appropriate for the study.
The study will be conducted in a school located in Lopez, Quezon. The Lopez National
Comprehensive High School is the locale of the research. The locality was selected for the convenience of

the researcher, also because the topic was formulated due to the observations made in LNCHS. At the
current time, adolescents studying at LNCHS were discovered to be involved in romantic relationships.
The researcher decided to choose only one section to study and draw a concluded generalization among
teenagers who engage in early romantic relationships. The study will be implemented in a section from
Data gathering is an important process for a research to be effective. The researcher will use
one instrument in collecting information needed for the study. The instrument to be used is an interview. It
is a survey-method, typically facilitates exchange of information between the respondents and the
researcher. An interview is a tool where the researcher initiates conversation with the respondents in order
to gather useful information about the research topic. Face-to-face interviews are efficient because the
connection allows the interviewer to gain more insights from the respondents.
