THE PROBLEM --- ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the general description of the study. It covers the

background of study, framework, the statement of the problem, research hypothesis,

limitation of the study, definition of terms used in the study, and significance of the

study.

Introduction

Adolescence is the stage where teens become curious on the things that surround

them. It is also the stage wherein they experience their first crush, puppy love and first

love. It is the stage wherein they seek for love and ending up to committing in a romantic

relationship. Sutter Health Palto Alto Medical Foundation defined romantic relationship

as relationship wherein you can truly be yourself with someone who you respect and are

respected by in return. (http://www.pamf.org/teen/abc/types/romantic.html) . Most of the

teens enter into relationships like this to feel respected. Aside from this they also find the

love that they needed in their partners.

Nowadays you can see couple students roaming around with fingers intertwined

and hands in each waist. They were in this commitment while they were still studying.

The researchers wanted to know the effects of entering romantic relationship in the

academic performance of students. They wanted to know if this type of relationship

creates a good or bad impact towards their studies and how they handle certain situation

like this.

Aside from this they wanted to know what the status of couples in nearby schools

is. They wanted to know if most of the couples are legal or are there relationship is being

kept special in their families. They wanted to know how this status affect the behavior of

young couples and how they overcome this situation despite their young age. How does

their families reacts in their relationships?

Also the researchers wanted to know how do they manage their time as a student,

partner, friend, and a son/daughter. They wanted to know how do these young people

make decisions and make time management.

And lastly they wanted to know what triggers them to enter in romantic

relationship despite of their young age. How does romantic relationship create an impact

in their lives and how they behave towards their partners.

The researchers noticed this factors that’s why they decided to conduct an inquiry
about the impact of romantic relationship in the academic performance of a student.
II. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This was an effort to present the study of the impact of romantic relationship in

the academic performance of students in Nick Joaquin Senior High School and Pugad

Lawin High School students. This study was conducted to know the different kinds of

romantic relationships they have and what is its effect in their grades. The researcher

considered the study of importance of the following:

Students. The findings of this research help them to understand their co-students who are

in this kind of relationship. This will also be a guide for future researchers who will have

the same topic like this.

Parents. The findings of this paper will make an impact to parents. It will help them

understand the behavior of their children when they were in romantic relationship. Aside

from this it will serve as their manual on how to handle their child who was in this kind

of relationship.

Teachers. The findings of this inquiry will help the teachers understand the behavior of

their students having romantic relationship in class. It helps them understand their

students who had struggles in class because of romantic relationship.

III. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The researchers will conduct an inquiry about the romantic relationships of

students. They will gather 50 students from Pugad Lawin High School and 50 from Nick

Joaquin Senior High School. They will conduct a survey on these couples and to their

teachers. In order to gather more information they will conduct a survey on their parents

and also to their friends. After conducting a survey, they will make an interview to this

people. After several days they will tabulate the results in order for them to know the

positive and negative impacts of romantic relationship in the academic performance of

teens.

Review of the Related Literature and Studies

This section of this paper presents a writing of different personalities which has

relevance to the current study. It involves quotations and citations from books and

writings of different authors, and other reference material that may serve as a basis for the

development of the proposed study.

Review of the Related Literature and Studies

Adolescence is the stage wherein we became curious of the things around us. It is also the

stage wherein we experience our first crushes, puppy loves and first loves. This is the

stage wherein we become curious about the feeling of being in love and eventually we

commit ourselves in a romantic type of relationship.

Romantic relationship or Love according to Principles of Psychology Today

( Bower, Bootzin & Zajonc) is the very intense and absorb great deal of our thoughts.

Love is just a result of what we think. Its just a product of what we think and what we

wanted to feel.

Love for teenagers is having a crush on someone and intense romantic longing for

someone (Ackland et.al, Growing Up).

According to an article Effects of Romantic Relationship on the Academic

Performance on College Students, Love is a deep sense of acceptance and commitment to

some person, object or activity. There are different kinds of love including parental, love

between friends, love of a child for his or her parents, patriotism or love of one’s

homeland and romantic love.

According to Jacob Craim (2016) in Effects of Having a Romantic Relationship in

academic performance, Love or Romantic Relationship is an emotion of strong affection

and personal attachment. It also said that it is common to teenagers to enter romantic

relationship because this is the stage wherein they got easily attracted to other opposite

sex.

The site Paragraphica said in Effects of Romantic Relationship on the Academic

performance on College students said that Romantic Relationship is the state of being

related of two persons who display love and strong emotion.

Robert Steinberg, a Psychologist created the concept of Triangular Theory Of Love

(Barthes, Roland 2015). According to him, there are three components of love - passion

(sexual or romantic attraction), intimacy (a deep sense of attachment, and a dynamic of

sharing) and compassion (a willingness to not only maintain the relationship, but also let

it grow). Aside from this he also elaborated the seven types of love or romantic

relationship:

1. Intimacy alone is friendship or liking.

2. When there is passion, it is called infatuated love.

3. When you feel a strong sense of commitment toward someone, but no passion or

intimacy, it is empty love.

4. Romantic love is when there is intimacy and passion between two people.

5. Companionate love is when there is intimacy and commitment, but not a whole lot

of passion.

6. Fatuous love is when there is passion and a will to commit, but no real intimacy.

7. When the three powerful elements combine, we get consummate love.

Romantic Relationship creates both positive and negative impact in the

performance of teens. Here are some of the positive impacts of relationship in academic

performance of teens.

According to Jacob Craim in Effects of Having a Romantic Relationship in

Academic Performance, Romantic Relationships serves as an inspiration for students to

get a high grades. It motivates students and they make students more lively and more

energetic.

Based on the article of Amanda Chatel (2015) Good Things about Being in a

Relationship: 6 Positive Effects Being in a relationship helps to relieve physical pain.

Students who were in this relationship relieve the pain in all day by just talking with

their partner. Their  partners helps them ease the physical pain that they had. People in

relationships have lower stress and lower rates of depression. Relationships can benefit

mental health–especially in women. A 2010 study by the University of Chicago and

Northwestern University found that single people suffer from psychological stress and

depression more than those in relationships because relationship status affects cortisol
production. Cortisol is the stress hormone that can either make or break how one is going

to react to a stressful situation. Less stress means less depression. Being in a relationship

can positively affect your career. The amount the partner supports his/her partner in

taking up his/her career can lead to better professional performance.

According to article Effects of Dating in College, being involved in romantic

relationships may increase personal acceptance and enhance self-beliefs.

Gabriela Hugins, make a research about Romantic Relationships and Academic

Performance, She said that there’s no any negative impact on the studies of youth.

The site Paragraphica said in Effects of Romantic Relationship on the Academic

performance on College students said that a student possesses characteristics that change

as they progress in their college years. Also romantic relationship serves as their stepping

stone in developing stage of a young person’s life. Aside from this it also helps develop

the emotional health.

Despite of all positive impact there are also some negative effects of Romantic

Relationship.

Furnman & Shaffer said that because of romantic relationship they tend not to get

a high scores. They spent more times with there love and because of this they forgot their

responsibilities in home and also forget their classroom responsibilities. Aside from this it

serves destruction rather than inspiration.

Sinocruz and Tayag (2012) stated in their study that students involved in a

relationship experienced more stress when facing deadlines for school.

Daisy Martinez (2012) Can dating affect my studies? specified that being in a

relationship is a source of stress on students’ lives and that trying to balance studying

and dating may be difficult to handle.

Entering this type of relationship is quite not easy. It was a journey that was full

of happiness, sickness and tears. Here are some ways to help the students who are in this

type of relationship.

Gloria Sandalan Ph.D in Teaching and a Teacher said that as a teacher you should

contain the attitude of Caring. You should understand what your students feel and reacts.
CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY OF STUDY

This Chapter describes and discussed how the researchers gather the

necessary data and information that will be used in the entire study. It describes who will

be the respondents and the focus of the research. This also shows the procedure of data

collection and instrument used; these chapters also discuss the type of research, research

method, and the research locale where the study will be conducted.

3.1 Methods of Research Used

The researchers use quantitative method of research. This describes the impact of

romantic relationship in the academic performance of students. They will conduct an

interview to teachers and friends of the students who are involved in a romantic

relationship. They will distribute questionnaire to the students of Pugad Lawin High

School and Nick Joaquin Senior High School.

The results and findings of this research will be statistically computed and will

analyze and interpreted.

3.2 Research Design

In order to discover the impact of romantic relationship in the academic

performance of students, the researchers used the descriptive method. They collected

detailed and factual information to describe existing phenomena. The researchers

want to know the effect of this romantic relationship.

They wanted to know if it affects positively or negatively. It allowed the

researcher to carefully describe and understand the behavior of the students.

3.3 Research Instruments

The researcher used quantitative research methodology. This is to know the

impact of romantic relationship and how it affects the student, positively or

negatively. Aside from this they also used survey questionnaire form to determine the

results of romantic relationship. The questionnaire is consisting of 10-12 times. They

will conduct this survey at Pugad Lawin High School and Nick Joaquin Senior High

School.

They will also conduct an interview to the teachers and friends of the students

who are involved in romantic relationship. They will ask some questions that will

determine the results of romantic relationship.

3.4 Locale

The researchers used Pugad Lawin High School and Nick Joaquin as their locale.

These two schools are located at District 1 Quezon City.

Nick Joaquin Senior High School is established in year 2016. It is a Senior High

School in Quezon City that offers Academic and Tech-Voc track. For Academic, they

offer General Academic Strand and Humanities and Social Sciences. And for Tech-

Voc they offer Information and Communication Technology. The researchers choose

50 students at this school. They chose this respondents using convenient sampling.
Pugad lawin High School is a junior High School located at District 1 Quezon

City. This School offers schooling from 7-10. The researchers chose 50 respondents

from grade 10 in this school.

3.5 Data Gathering

The researchers personally assist the respondents when they are answering the

questionnaire. They discussed the significance of the study and accomplish the

distribution of the instrument property.

The respondents are given 5-15 mins to answer this question and to accomplish

the questionnaire that the researcher gave. After the questionnaires have been

accomplished, the result were tallied and tabulated. These data became the basis of

analysis and interpretation.

CHAPTER IV

DATA ANALYSIS

This chapter presents the data collected from the respondents from Nick Joaquin

Senior High School and Pugad Lawin High School. The findings are based on the topic

The Impact of Romantic Relationship in the Academic Performance of Students .The data

are grouped by the type of questions based on the statement of the problem. The

questionnaires and interview questionnaires are attached on appendix A and B.

The Figure above shows the year level that the students started getting or having a

romantic partner. Looking at the table, the Grade 8 Year level got the highest

percentage. It got 27.27% out of 100%. Next is Grade 10 which got 22.72%,

followed by Grade 7 which got 20%, Grade 9 which got 16.36%, Grade 11 having

8.18% and lastly is Grade 12 which got 5.45%.

The result only shows that during the Year Level of Grade 8, where the puberty

started to begin and developed, the teens also develop the feeling of being “inlove” or

the feeling of “love”. This is the stage where they started to felt some strange things,

the feeling of some butterflies in their stomach and the feeling of cloud nine. And all

of those things lead them in having a partner and having a romantic relationship.

According to Jacob Craim (2016) in Effects of Having a Romantic

Relationship in academic performance, Love or Romantic Relationship is an emotion

of strong affection and personal attachment. It also said that it is common to teenagers

to enter romantic relationship because this is the stage wherein they got easily

attracted to other opposite sex. And mostly it is common to teens to feel this kind of

feeling and entering this kind of relationship.

respondents involve themselves in a relationship once. It got 43.85%. Followed by twice

which got 20%, Three times got 16.15%, fourth got 12.31% and lastly are others which

got 7.69%.

The data shows that despite of having a partner in young age, most of the

respondents engage themselves once or twice. This proves that despite of having a

relationship, the respondents still prioritize their studies and romantic relationship always

comes next.

with their partner first before doing school works got 24.35%, handle task as a

student and as a partner got 11.39%, helping each other’s task got 20% and lastly is

others which got 1.74%.

The data shows that despite of having a partner, students are responsible enough

because they finish first their assigned task before spending time with their partners.

They uses their time wisely to avoid any conflict on their studies. They know how to

prioritize well and they know how to manage their time wisely.

F. COMMON INFLUENCER IN ENTERING ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP

FIGURE 6
The data in the previous page are the findings on who is the basic influencer of

students on entering romantic relationship. The data shows that there are some peoples

that influence them. First is the family. It got 10.94%, next is their friends which got

50%, peers which got 25.78%, community 13.28%, teachers and others both got 0%.

This only shows that the major influencers of the students are their friends. They

commonly do what their friends do and listen on what their friends told to them. Second

to their friends are their peers, they follow what their peers told them and that leads them

in having such romantic relationship.

relationship. Illegal got 30.36% and Mutual Understanding (M.U) got 14.28%.

Based on the findings in Figure 7, it is evident that most of the students have a

legal type of relationship; this only shows that they value the virtue of respect to their

parents and they assure that their parents or loved ones know that they are in a

relationship. This action was important so they have someone to talk with or consult with

when their relationships are on rocks or in a strong struggle and also there are someone

The findings above shows that most of the teens wanted to feel love that’s why they

enter romantic relationships. They find the love that they want with their parents.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary
The main goal of this thesis is to know the impact of romantic relationship in the

academic performance of students. Aside from this it is also the goals of the researchers

to determine the different reasons why teens enter romantic relationship. Determining the

general meaning of romantic relationship, and how it affects the academic performance

of students. Researchers provide sample studies and literature that can make this paper

much stronger. All of the questions in the survey questionnaires are developed and

designed based on the main objective of this study. In each corresponding numbers, the

respondents are asked to put a check on the item that they did experienced. Based on the

findings that the researchers gathered it was very evident that romantic relationship

makes a good impact in the academic performance of the students. Most of the students

become inspired and motivate because they know that there is someone that is supporting
them. They pursue more and worked more in achieving their dreams. It is also clear that

being Legal nor Illegal doesn’t make a negative impact on the studies of students but it

makes them more courageous in achieving their goals in life.

To put it in a nutshell, this study says that romantic relationship doesn’t make a

negative impact in the studies of students but it impact positively.

Conlusion

This paper contains the Impact of Romantic Relationship in the Academic

Performance of Students. As the researchers conduct the study they knew that every

students have their own perception about this matter. After having this study the

researchers find out the following:

1. We have a wrong perception that having a partner while studying creates a

negative impact on the studies. It doesn’t make a negative one but a positive one.

Because of this relationship they become more inspired and much motivated.

2. Students make sure that they finish all their school works before spending time

with their partners. They make sure that they are responsible students and manage

their time well.

3. Students enter romantic relationship because they wanted to feel love. And they

found this love in their partners.

4. Students still have a legal type of relationship. They both still make sure that their

parents know whats going on them.

5. Romantic relationship is common to students because they were curious, they just

felt it and they wanted to be love.

Reccomendations

The researchers recommend making a future study on the following topics

that is somehow related to their recent study.

2. Make a study on the impact of early pregnancy towards the academic

performance of students.

3. Conduct an inquiry about the perceptions of students in heart ache and their

response about this matter.

4. Make an inquiry about the perception of couples towards pre-marital sex.

5. Conduct an investigation on how the early couples ensure they can be

successful in the future.

6. Make an investigation about the perception of students in romantic

relationships.

7. Conduct an analysis on the impact of same sex relationship towards academic

performance.
8. Make an analysis on how the romantic relationship affects the behavior of

students.

9. Conduct an investigation about the perceptions of oldies about same sex

relationship

10. And lastly create a study on how romantic relationship affects the growth of

an individual.
