CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Love is the most profound emotion known to human beings. Being in a

relationship at the very young age is difficult, especially when the students are

prioritizing their studies. 21st century generation of youngsters are more of outcome-

based in line with education teaching and learning instructions. They build more self-

efficiency with assignments, projects and participation school activities. A study

conducted by Campbell & Oliver (1994) found out the benefits upon engaging in

romantic relationship such as “feeling of happiness, self-growth and self-understanding,

as well as more positive self-esteem”.

Youngsters should know how to manage their time, so they will not fail on their

exams and for giving time to their partner as well as their family. Family members

especially parents are the ones against to early intimate relationship which usually begin

at the age of fourteen. It is just that parents don’t want their child to experience emotional

pain whereby early relationship may affect their academic performance.

Parents want what would be the best for their children, so that they don’t tolerate

those things; instead, they are pursuing their child to study hard for them to fulfill their

dreams and goals in the future. Some students that are engaged in early intimate

relationship take it as an inspiration, but on the other side, it ends up being a distraction.

Most of all teenager couples are also experiencing different problems and arguments

within their relationship, and with that they carry the burden on their hearts throughout

the day that can lead distractions with regards to their performances in various activities..

Background of the study

Having an early relationship at a very young age may results to various

consequences which might not be handled easily. Mostly, high schoolers are prone to this

kind of set up. The researcher observed that, some young students are engaged in early

relationships, and have some thought of having a relationship in a young age. (Maramara,

2015)

The researchers wanted to study about the topic which is the ‘correlation of early

intimate relationship of students to their academic performances as this wanted to

determine the different problems the students may encounter when they are engage in a

relationship at young age. In line with that, researchers also aimed to determine how this

affects the academic performances and let the students be aware of what would be the

result if they would engage in an early relationship. The researchers want to give possible

answers or solutions to the students who fail on their school performances due to

engagement in an early relationship.

Objectives of the study

This study focuses on determining the various impacts of engaging into intimate

relationship to their academic performances. Specifically, the study sought to achieve the

following objectives:

1. Evaluate the reasons of engaging in early relationship.

Correlation of early intimate relationship… tlda, cvca, knkp 3

2. Discuss how the students handle various factors in line with having an

early relationship, in terms of:

a. Time management.

b. Societal adjustments/interactions.

c. Academic/school performances.

3. Recommending possible ways for the students to manage their school

performance while engage in an early intimate relationship.

Significance of the study

This study would be beneficial primarily to students, fellow readers and the future

researchers.

Students and Particular Readers This study can help them resolve problems in

line with intimate relationship if ever they are encountering the same thing. This study

can would broaden their knowledge about the correlation of intimate relationship to their

academic performances.

Future Researcher This can be a source of their further investigations of another

study related to the ones being published.

Researchers They would understand/comprehend more on the situations similar

and if they gone through this, they would know how the deal with early intimate

relationship.

Community To give some information about it and to lessen the engagement of

students in early intimate relationship.

Scope and Limitations

This study focused on the effects of early intimate relationship toward academic

performances of students of AMA Computer College Lucena (2018-2019). The 25

respondents in grade 11 and also 25 respondents from grade 12 students were asked to be

part of this study.

Time Frame of the study was took over four weeks during the academic year

2018.

Definition of terms

For better understanding and clarification of the study, the following terms are

defined conceptually and operationally:

Correlation a mutual relationship or connection between two or more things just

like the correlation o early intimate relationship of students to their academic

performances.

Distraction a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something

else. A factor that the students encountered in having an early intimate relationship at the

same time focusing on their academic performance.

Correlation of early intimate relationship… tlda, cvca, knkp 5

Intimate relationship is an interpersonal relationship that involves physical or

emotional intimacy. A relationship between the students involved in early intimate

relationship.

Inspiration: the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something,

especially to do something creative. It makes the students happy every time they are with

their partner.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related studies about early intimate relationship. The

first section tackled about the involvement of students in an early relationship. The

second section tackled about the possible factors that the students may encounter in

having an early intimate relationship.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's hierarchy of needs was developed to modify the needs that each human

makes up the well-being. Abraham Maslow developed five stages of needs that motivate

the human behavior which is made from lowest to highest level including physiological,

safety, social (love and belonging), esteem, and self-actualization. Each need must be met

from lowest (physiological) to highest (self-actualization).

The first two levels of need are considered basic needs, which are based on the

need for survival and safety. The third stage in Maslow's hierarchy of needs is the social

stage (also known as the love and belonging stage), which includes interpersonal
Correlation of early intimate relationship… tlda, cvca, knkp 6

relationships. The social stage is not based on basic needs but instead on psychological or

emotional needs. The primary source of behavior at this stage of development is the need

for emotional connections such as friendships, family, social organizations, romantic

attachments, or other situations involving interactions with others.

Social needs refer to the need to have interpersonal interaction once the

physiological and safety needs have been fulfilled. Maslow considered the social stage as

an important part of psychological development because relationships with others help

reduce emotional concerns such as depression or anxiety. As humans, we all have a need

to feel loved and accepted by others. (Thomas, 2018)

Relationship/Romantic Relationship

Relationship is the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are

connected, or the state of being connected. For many high school students, having a

partner is near top of their priority list, and some individuals may feel left out or even feel

like failures if they’ve not dated someone by the end of high school. Meanwhile, having a

boyfriend or girlfriend can make a high school student happy or feel that they fit in, such

a relationship can have other consequences for the individuals which may not be proved

as positive. High school students typically maintain a circle of friends whom they depend

on for companion, but the politics of relationships can alter these friendships. When a

student gets into a relationship with a guy or girl, that person’s friends may complain that

the student isn’t spending enough time with them anymore; Worse, the peer might feel

jealous, and this envy may manifest in arguments among the peers.
Correlation of early intimate relationship… tlda, cvca, knkp 7

High school students have plenty of stresses to be stressed about. For a start,

they’re teenagers with all the emotional difficulties, such as mood swings, which is often

brought into reality. Students also feel pressure to succeed academically to go to college,

they wanted and expected to perform extracurricular activities such as sports and arts.

Relationship introduces another source of pressure into the student’s life, taking more of

time and potentially adding to emotional upset in the case of relationship problems. As

noted in the essay made by Matthew E. Kopfler, pupils involved in relationships are often

subject to more stress as a result. Support The presence of a boyfriend or girlfriend in a

pupil’s life can have a positive effect on that individual, providing the relationship is

stable. The individuals in a relationship, even one based around a high school, can

become very close, which in turn allows each partner to support the other during the

experiences high school life presents to them. For instance, the pair might find studying

together for exams is beneficial.

This may lead to a sudden forced breakup between individuals who decided to

continue the relationship at college is not worth it. If the students continue their

relationship, this can have negative effects on their college careers; for example, a student

might neglect to make new friends at college in favor of heading home regularly to see

her boyfriend. Throughout high school there are always the many stereotypes, and there

are always the couples that walk down the halls holding hands. High school is the most

popular place for teenagers to interact and be exposed to the feeling of love.

But if someone is in a romantic relationship, that person often chooses not to study.

They instead choose to spend time with their significant other, which could affect his or

her grades in classes. But this is not the case with junior, according to Travis Lee, his
Correlation of early intimate relationship… tlda, cvca, knkp 8

girlfriend is very smart and helps him with his work so that’s a positive effect, and he

said to a study completed by the department of psychology at Loyola University, there is

no clear cut relationship between academic performance and romantic relationships.

There are many researchers that do believe that romantic relationships in teenagers have

negative effects on their academics (Paragraphica, 2018). Some may argue that

relationship that starts at a younger age is not healthy; others may think otherwise.

Regardless of what people say, teen relationship has both its advantages and its pitfalls.

Advantages of Engaging in an Early Intimate Relationship

The advantages of early relationship, first many teenagers “excel in their class”,

because they become motivated to study hard because of their partner which is

considered as a positive result for every students and teenagers looks “gain better self-

esteem or self-confidence”. Many teenagers having an early romantic relationship gain

self-confidence because when we have a partner we feel safe and secured. Our partner

gives us an assurance that we can do more. Lastly, many teenagers said that “they gain

more friends” because of their partners. Because when we are in a relationship we

encounter and meet our boyfriends or girlfriends friends (Elevate, 2016) .There are more

advantages of having an early romantic relationship gives them a positive result for every

aspect of their live, to their social and emotional life.

Developing a good strong relationship while you are a teenager might rib you of

some of the vital other teenage needs you have. Sports, extracurricular activities, family

time, grades, school, worries about the future, and every day issues revolving around

drugs, huffing, and drinking are just as prevalent in your day to day life. You must be
Correlation of early intimate relationship… tlda, cvca, knkp 9

tired. The great beauty of teen relationships is that they help you to grow. If you’re lucky,

your relationships will grow with you and become a static force in your life. During the

teenage years, you’re going to learn a lot about what doesn’t work in a relationship. Girls

are going to meet guys that border on violent, guys are going to meet girls who want to

move way too fast, and with each challenge, there are real emotions involved in trying to

determine the best course of action. Just because your feelings are strong and seemingly

even a bit crazy, that doesn’t mean they aren’t real.

Disadvantages of Intimate Relationship

While the disadvantages of having an early romantic relationship affect their study as

if “they gain lower grades”. How ironic that many are said that having an early romantic

relationship helps them to excel in class, but it also affect to their study to gain a lower

grades, many teenagers may learn to keep secrets from their parents, teens “tend to be

quarrelsome”, many teens “come home late”. Because they want to hang out with their

boyfriends and girlfriends, they wanted to spend more time with their partner’s company

and lastly is “they disregard the major priorities”. Teens are easily distracted when it

comes to their partner. They wanted to give enough attention and time to their boyfriends

or girlfriends. Reason why teens forgot to prioritize, focus and manage more important

things (Elevate, 2016).

There are numerous variables that can become terribly confusing while you’re

growing into the relationships that mark this very important time in life. Dealing with

adult feelings without the perks of being an adult. Sometimes it’s good just to step back,

take a breather, and then come back to the relationship with a new approach. This might
Correlation of early intimate relationship… tlda, cvca, knkp 10

be necessary from time to time to prevent the potential loss your sense of self in the

relationship.

The setbacks are usually sometimes destructive especially when your feelings are

hurt so bad that nothing else can ever replace the lost happiness that once you have

shared. Usually when partners break up, these can lead to suicide a sad ending. Other

setbacks would include wrong decisions can cause life pressures in the lives of both

partners. One good example is pregnancy. This is one of the issues that is seldom

welcomed. This can lead to further problems like single parents and social pressures in a

society. When you are experience a teen relationship, there are times you will feel on top

of the world and times you would feel as though your whole world just bottomed out. It

would be fine to admit the feelings, talk about it and deal with it. If you can learn this

precious gift now while you’re young, you will be heads above the rest of the crowd as

you continue to mature.

Conceptual Framework

It determines how early intimate relationship affects the academic performances

of students with regards to time, levels of motivation and the levels of anxiety. By the

used of questionnaires as instruments, it can be easily to know the percentage of the

students who are affected or distracted when engaging in an early intimate relationship,

and the students who found out engaging in an intimate relationship makes them feel

happy and special. Engaging in an early intimate relationship has advantage and

disadvantages that the students may encountered when having a relationship.

Correlation of early intimate relationship… tlda, cvca, knkp 11

“Early Intimate relationships” is placed in the framework to specify the kind of

relationship which will be studied. Applying the concept proposed by the theory of the

Need to Belong, romantic relationship allows people satisfy the need to belong. Romantic

relationship offers people more desire to have a constant feeling of being loved and cared

and is characterized by more frequent interaction because of its exclusivity.

Having a perspective of enduring and harmonious relationship, people have the

desire to achieve their goals, thus giving their best in every task they do which

contributes to the betterment of a relationship. However, this perspective is threatened by

some factors such as jealousy, conflicts with partner, disapproval of other important

persons, etc.

Intimate relationships, as described in the conceptual framework affect the

Academic performance or tasks in either positive or negative way. Thus, academic

performance of the students (engaged in early intimate relationship) which involves

school activities or tasks is affected by intimate relationship. The positive and negative

reactions of the students regarding the relationships are determined by the levels of

anxiety and motivation as a student (Bernales, 2011).

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the strategies used by the researchers in order to seek

answers to the problems of the study. It consists of the research locale, respondents,

research design, instrumentation, data-gathering procedures, statistical treatment used in

the collection of the study.

Research Locale

The study was conducted in AMA Computer College of Lucena Campus which is

located at 160 M.L. Tagarao St Iyam, Lucena city. It is a private school where students

are mostly engaged in an early intimate relationship and the location guaranties easy

access to the researchers.

Research Design

The researchers implemented the simple descriptive design. This design used

survey questionnaires which were distributed to the respondents in order to attain the

main objective of the study which is determining the various impacts of engaging into

intimate relationship to their academic performances. The survey or the research itself

tried to describe, analyze and interpret the status of the respondents. The design is a non-

experimental correlation research. This design investigated the relationship of the

variables without manipulating them. The two main variables evaluated were academic

performance and early intimate relationship which involves time management, levels of

motivation and anxiety.

Respondents

The respondents of the study were the 50 grade 11 and grade 12 students of AMA

Computer College. They were chosen purposively since they are the ones exposed to the

target focused of the study.

Instrumentation

In this study, the researchers used questionnaire. The questionnaire is in the form

that is suitable for the demographic profile, and influence of having an early intimate

relationship. The first part of the questionnaire is about the demographic profile of the

respondents which includes the name, gender, grade, strand and age. The second part

contains the positive and negative influence of having an early intimate relationship.

Data-Gathering Procedures
Correlation of early intimate relationship… tlda, cvca, knkp 14

 The researchers used questionnaires in gathering data. But the first thing

that researchers did before administering the research is, to secure a letter

of endorsement to conduct the pilot testing for the study from the research

adviser and the adviser of the certain class.

 The letter explained the nature and purpose of the study that attached for

the purpose of receiving the consent and approval of the School Head.

 After the approval of the School head, researchers set the date of the

formal day in gathering data and conducting the present research.

 Next, the researchers went to the said school to gather the respondents and

distribute their questionnaires.

percentage of respondents of the study by their grade level. Fifty percent (50%) of the

respondents are grade 11 and the grade 12 is also fifty percent (50%).

Conclusion

 Therefore the researcher concluded that engaging in early intimate relationship

really affects the academic performances of students.

 Therefore the researcher concluded that engaging in early intimate relationship

inspired the students to do their school works.

 It also concluded that having an early intimate relationship is never easy so that

parents should always aware in their child’s relationship so that they’ll give them

some advices.

 Therefore, the reason why students engage in early intimate relationship is

because they want to have a companion, they enjoy each other company.

Recommendations

The following recommendations are offered based from the findings and

conclusions drawn:

 students who are engaged in early intimate relationships should be maintaining

their responsibilities in their studies

 They have to be more aware and duly implement their time management.

 Parental guidance is important to those students who are involved in intimate

relationship
