The Effects of Romantic Relationship on Academic Performances of Grade 12 HUMSS Students

Abstract

This study was conducted to discover the effect of involvement in a romantic relationship
amongst Grade 12 HUMSS Students Of Saint Benilde International School,S.Y 2020-2021. This
study also explores the societal pressures for these students to date, as well as the academic
pressures they experience. Besides that, this study determines gender differences in placing
importance on academic achievement versus romantic relationships. This study isn’t all about its
effects but also to guide students that have already boyfriend/girlfriend to maintain their
relationship and also to guide them that they should not have less focus on their academic
studies.

Chapter 1: The problem and its background

Being in love may be considered as part of the growing process, where most of these young
people will be going in and out of relationships simply to experience the feeling of loving and
being loved.

When involved in a relationship, students usually would spend much of their time with their
partner, leaving little time left for other things such as studying, family and friends. As these
young people go beyond the age of 18 they would have to leave their homes for school. Here they
are challenged to adapt to new environment, new people, where they have to adapt to increased
responsibilities and maintaining their academic achievement. This will be the time when students
start to seek for companionship to be with them and motivate them to undergo this trying time as
a university student.

Having love relationship with other individual has been part of lifestyle for most students today.
Prioritizing their relationship with their love partners makes their time less spent especially in
their subjects and to other school activities that affects their performance. It is an issue for some
people because of different opinions and perceptions, mostly for the parents who are responsible
for sending their children in school and for the teachers who are instructing and guiding them.
Having lesser time in studying is a burden to achieve a good academic performance. Students
should be properly guided because having a good academic performance is the reflection of
learning in school that is a very good foundation that a student will brought upon graduation and
when they start their careers. Education is the key to whatever career or goal a student is aiming
for it will recognize the readiness of a certain individual in accordance to what field of work or
career a student is about to land in the future. Our group choose the topic because of the reason
that we are concerned for students’ academic performance who is involved in a love relationship.
