INTRODUCTION
Students today are more prone to engage themselves
in romantic relationships, not thinking of the
consequences that would arise from their decisions.
Today, being in a relationship is a “trend”. Teens are
becoming more aggressive because of love. As a
result, romantic relationship gains more importance
among teenagers nowadays. Adolescents crave to
have romantic relationship to which love is given
without restrictions. During adolescence, teenagers
start to crave attention from fellow peers. Teenagers
become more interested and involved in dating
because of their desire to belong with others.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
According to Wigmann (2009), an adolescent
relationship plays an important role to
adolescents as it develops the ability to commit
relationships in which it builds up their loyalty to
their partners.
In the study conducted by Kofler (2009), the
feeling of competency in dating and a resulting
increase in self-esteem may have a self-
perpetuating influence on students’ performance.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Furman and Schaffer (2003) and Kopfle (2009)
stated that the feeling of competency in dating
and a resulting increase in self-esteem may have
a bad or good influence on students
performance.
Based on the statement of Ronco, Sinocruz,
Tayag, Tirado, Tomagan and Uy (2012), high
school students must also consider the level
commitment in a relationship.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Based on the study of Furman (2002), young
people spend a great deal of time thinking about,
talking about and being in a romantic
relationship.
Another study conducted by Bredgen, Vitaro,
Doyle, Markiewicz and Bukowski (2002), it was
revealed that the relationships that an individual
forms throughout their life affect their behavioral
characteristics and overall perception of
themselves.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
What are the effects of romantic
relationship on Humanities and Social
Sciences (HUMSS) students’ academic
performance?
What are the factors that influenced
HUMSS students to enter in a romantic
relationship?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The researchers wanted to know why
HUMSS students are preoccupied
with getting themselves involved in
early romantic relationships, and
also to determine the possible
effects of this in their academic
performance.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
The research study focused on Grade 11 and
Grade 12 HUMSS students. The researchers
have a total of 80 respondents in 6
classrooms of HUMSS (A, B, C, & 1, 2, 3) who
are engaged in a romantic relationship. The
researchers floated a survey questionnaire in
gathering the data. This study was conducted
at Baguio City National High School – Senior
High School.

METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN
The researchers used a descriptive-correlation
design in this study, since it talks about the
relations of the variables. The researchers
also used a purposive sampling in identifying
who and who were not qualified to answer the
survey questionnaire. The researchers use
dthis design because it can help them to
gather all the data that is needed in the
research study.
SAMPLING AND LOCALE OF THE
STUDY
This research was conducted at
Baguio City National High School –
Senior High School. A survey
questionnaire was used in data
gathering. Only students who are in
Grade 11 and Grade 12 of HUMSS are
asked to answer the survey
questionnaire.
DATA GATHERING TOOL AND
COLLECTION PROCEDURE
The researchers used a survey questionnaire
including a screening questions. It consist of
two (2) questions with eight (8) choices on it.
Students from Grade 11 and Grade 12
HUMSS are asked to fill out the survey
questionnaire because they fit the
qualification of the researchers. The
researchers choosed them because they
believe that those students have “more
experience” than those on the other track
and strands.
TREATMENT OF DATA /
DATA ANALYSIS
The researchers used the statistical tool of
frequency count, percentages, and mean of
the students responses in interpreting the
collected datas. After collecting the data from
the respondents, the researchers will notify
the participants regarding the overall purpose
of the research to express openness to the
questions or concerns about the data that will
be collected.
TREATMENT OF DATA /
DATA ANALYSIS
The researchers include a letter of
permission in the survey questionnaire
that will expain the research topic and
the confidentiality. The respondents will
be assured that their answers on the
survey questionnaire will only be used in
the research.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
According to Cotterell (2001), at this time,
the evidences regarding this romantic
relationship remain equivocal or debatable.
In addition to externalizing and internalizing
symptoms, quality of social relations has
been linked to academic achievements and
related variables.
This implies that the main factors influenced
the HUMSS students from entering a
romantic relationship is motivation. Students
who are engaged in romantic relationship
often boost their social developments.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
A study conducted by Rosenburg (2005)
suggested that the relationship status of the
surveyed high school students affects their
self-esteem level and their maturity level.
Balancing students’ academic performance
and their social life might seem very hard,
but in the results of the study, with this
setup, students become more matured in
handling both studying and having a
romantic relationship.
CONCLUSIONS
Having a romantic relationship does not
affect negatively because they can easily
focus on their academic performance
and at the same time with their partners.
In this study, the researchers also
indicated that not all students who are
engaged in romantic relationship have a
low academic performance.
CONCLUSIONS
Relationship status does not have a
significant effect on one’s self-esteem. It
is based on the students behavior and
attitude in school and on how they cope
up with their partners.
Having a romantic relationship does not
really affect HUMSS students` academic
performance.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Researchers should provide more
insights and studies about the effects of
having a romantic relationship on
students’ academic performance.
For future researchers, it would be more
interesting if the researchers could
provide a large amount of respondents,
specifically respondents who are
engaged in romantic relationships.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Consume the given time in the research
properly, so that the research paper will
be finish at the right time.
Cooperation of the members, the
research will not be done at the right
time without cooperation.
Prolong your patience, without patience
you will be having misunderstandings
and arguments.
RECOMMENDATIONS
For the students who are in a romantic
relationship, they should know how to
balance their academic performance and
their romantic relationship.
For the parents, inform their child about
the effects of having romantic
relationship on their academic
performance.
