ESL / EFL RESOURCES Memory Game

Activity Type Introduction

Writing, listening and Here is an entertaining memory game to help students practice
speaking activity, 'There was/were...' statements and 'Was/Were there...?' questions

Procedure

Divide the students into pairs (A and B).
'There was/were...'

'Was/Were there...?' Give each student a corresponding A or B worksheet.

Students will also need a pen and paper for writing.

Aim
Tell the students that they are going to play a memory game
To practice 'There was/ where they have 20 seconds to remember as many pictures as
were...' statements and they can from the worksheet in front of them.

questions and short When everyone is ready, ask the students to turn over their

seconds.
Preparation After 20 seconds, tell the students to turn the worksheet back
Make one copy of the two over.

of students. The students' task is to then write down as many items as they
can remember using 'There was/were...', e.g. 'There was a TV'.
Students write their sentences on a separate piece of paper.
Level
When the students have finished writing, they swap their face
Elementary down worksheet with their partner and look at the pictures on
their partner's worksheet.
Time The students then take it in turns to ask 'Was there a...?' and
25 minutes 'Were there any...?' questions to confirm if their sentences are
right or wrong.

Their partner answers 'Yes, there was/were' or 'No, there wasn't/

weren't' as appropriate.

Students score one point for each correctly remembered item.

The student with the most points wins the game.

Afterwards, get feedback from the class to find out who could
remember the most items.
