GEM214E – ENGINEERING MEASUREMENTS

Final Online Exam (20-21 Spring) June 17, 2021

All the four questions are equally graded Time allowed:100 minutes
1. Explain the following arguments:
a. Explain the primary purpose of using cavitation tunnels and the types of experiments
performed on these facilities “IN YOUR OWN SENTENCES”.
b. Explain the differences in the test procedures for resistance tests in Ata Nutku Ship
Model Testing Laboratory, using a mechanical type Atwood dynamometer and
electronic dynamometer “IN YOUR OWN SENTENCES”.

2. Explain the following arguments:

a. In the uncertainty analysis for the ship model resistance test, it was seen that the
uncertainty error was high as a result of the calculations. Then, the resistance values
and engine power of the full scale ship are calculated with the results obtained from
the model. Comment on the negative consequences of high uncertainty error for full
scale ship. Explain in your own words how to reduce the high uncertainty error
(Note: The experiment was repeated a large number of times).
b. Draw a sketch of the Data Acquisition System used in Ata Nutku Ship Model
Testing Laboratory and explain each component “IN YOUR OWN SENTENCES”.

3. In a resistance test in Ata Nutku Ship Model Testing Laboratory the following model
resistance values for a 7600 DWT Tanker at the design draught and at T=13 °C have been
obtained.
a. Calculate ship particulars in the table
b. Convert the measured resistance values at T=13 °C temperature to the standard
temperature of T=15 °C
c. Calculate the effective power, PE for ship, values, using the model total resistance
coefficients CTM at T=15 °C for all speeds given.

4. An experimental study is conducted to determine the hydroacoustic characteristics of a
propulsion system. As a result of the experiments, the standard deviation of the distribution
and the observed sample mean value are estimated as 7.65 and 132.5, respectively, for
overall sound pressure. A total of 30 measurements were taken into consideration while
performing the calculations. Suppose that the level of confidence is 95% and 99%, then
calculate both confidence interval and evaluate the results comparatively by considering the
level of confidence.
Determine the 𝑧𝑎/2 value for CI 95% by using the given Normal Table and elaborate the
calculation steps.

CI 𝒛𝒂/𝟐

95% ? 𝑧𝑎/2 × 𝑠 𝑧𝑎/2 × 𝑠

[ 𝑥̄ − , 𝑥̄ + ]
99% 𝑧𝑎/2 = 2.576 √𝑛 √𝑛
