VISCOSITY
DEFINITION

Viscosity is defined as the property of a fluid which offers resistance to

the movement of one layer of fluid over another adjacent layer of the
fluid. It has been divided into two parts given below.

KINEMATIC VISCOSITY

DEFINITION

Kinematic Viscosity is the ratio of dynamic viscosity to the

density of fluid. The method of recording the Kinematic
Viscosity of a fluid is used widely in laboratories and is
defined by ASTM D445. It is denoted by the Greek symbol
(v) called ‘nu’.
• Mathematically Kinematic viscosity has been defined as follows:-

we know that,
Dynamic Viscosity 𝛍
v= =

The units of Kinematic viscosity is obtained as

Units of KINEMATIC VISCOSITY
 In MKS and SI, the unit of kinematic viscosity is
meter2/sec or m2/sec.
 And in CGS units it is written as cm2/s. In CGS units,
kinematic viscosity is also known stoke.

1 2
Thus, one stoke = cm2/s = ( ) m2/s = 10-4 m2/s

The unit of kinematic viscosity is = 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒

𝐿2
So the dimension of the kinematic viscosity is =
𝑇
= L2 T-1
It can also be written as, [M0L2 T-1]
