Philosophy 1402 Written Assignment

Unit 6 Prof. Sergey

What is your truth?

What does it mean ‘your truth’? Is it ones spiritual beliefs , your very essence that molds

your mental mindset and is the foundation of your being? The relevance of living your truth to

the highest standards of your virtues and principles honoring your inner self. The foundations of

who you are in all aspects your being is your authentic self.( Fahkry.T.(2017)

The influence of nature and nurturing molds our principles to what we believe . Our life

experiences that embed wisdom are pillars of our true self. How we think, how we live and how

we react to situations is a result of our truth. My own truth , my authentic self stems from my

belief in God. To follow his word , his teaching and life a good pious life as best I can. Morality

and ethics of right and wrong are major factors of my truth. To have compassion for one another,

to follow the laws set by God and be guided by faith sets the stage for life and my authentic

truth. I believe that truth is what you know true, what you see to be true and what you believe to

be true. Yet all of this may differ from one person to another. We have the freedom to think for

ourselves and seek the truth in all matters of life.

In contrast to Plato beliefs the there is a deficiency of knowledge which made for an argument of

cynicism. He believed that truths are objective and that there are apparent differences between

knowing and believing. According to Plato, “for one to have knowledge: is (1) the proposition

must be believed; (2) the proposition must be true; and (3) the proposition must be supported by

good reasons”. (Oxford University Press n.d.) This statement supports the idea that truth must
be rationalized. Plato also believes that things must be real and take a real form. However, belief

in the unseen such as God , is a truth that is spiritual and has no right or wrong context. It is a

personal choice that stems from our surrounding, influences and own knowledge of what we

think is true. It is what I belief to be true and my belief alone. Not my friend or neighbor only

my truth and that is what matters. My authentic self is how I travel on the road of life with all

its curves, hills and pot holes. Being true to myself guides all aspects of my life. All the

knowledge I have attained in all forms that I find to be true is suffice.

Living your authentic self , your truth, I believe impacts our empathy and compassion. My

words and actions are a result of my authenticity. Thus my core upholds who I am. Moreover,

my truth directs how I live and in the best possible way.

Plato may not of concurred with my thoughts having to have real forms and to pose an

argument, but a personal truth such as mine is based on faith, choice and what I believe to be

right for myself. In Plato’ Republic Book X , Socrates said, “ No man is to be valued more than

the truth.”(Woolf. 2007)

All the great philosophers have their beliefs on truth. Some may share the same ideas and

arguments and some differ greatly in how they interpret truth. Truth holds us accountable

morally, ethically and spiritually. What my truth may be ,may not be the same as yours. Your

knowledge, and your beliefs are the essence of who you are. Socrates quoted, “I cannot teach

anybody anything, I can only make them think.” Plato quoted, “ Philosophy is the Science

which considers truth.” (quotemaster.org)

All the great philosophers argued the idea of truth. It is what we seek and desire to know.

Our interpretation of how we see things. Belief of things and the understanding of it in all forms

becomes our truth. We follow our hearts, intuitions, and knowledge from life around us. One

must stand for their values and principles of right and wrong that is a pillar of their truth. Be

steadfast in what you believe to be your truth and defend what you know. It is our own authentic

truths that makes us who we are.

For me my truth is exuded in all aspects of my life. My family, friends and colleagues experience

my truth every day. It is who I am. My truth represents my character and soul. My belief in God,

the human connection, morality and ethics of right and wrong, and my emotional senses of what

I think and how I think is the exhibit of my authentic truth.
