For the Turkmen, as the folk
poet Aşık Veysel says,
"My true love is the black soil . "
Looking from this point of
view, there appears before us an
interesting and well-established
cu ltural phenomenon . . .
Customarily the Turkmen visit
the graves of their dead on impor
tant days in a spirit of celebration .
The "saz" is played and the twirl
ing of the sama begins . . . Babies
in bunting are laid u pon their
grandfather's (or grandmother's)
graves- - "we have brought you
your grandchild" is the chant. . .
And this i s the way children grow
up among the Turkmen- - with
the tradition of visiting the graves
of ancestors.

The village continued to flow
out into the cemetery for the next
hour. Only the sick and the wom
en in confinement (stili in the first
forty days after childbirth) stayed
at home. in the end, we too, as
visiting tourists, started up the
road to the gravesite.
When we got there, young
girls greeted us in an air of festivi
ty. Glasses of ayran were offered
"for the sake of the spirits of the
dead".
The scene was quite intrigu
ing . . .
Fires had been lit b y the

who were not were putting the
food away in bags to take home.
The bags were to be hung up on
the walls to assure a fruitful sum
mer.
Towards noon, meals were
set out. All kinds of dishes

a way of reaching God, of becom

The Turkmen hope t o breathe
their last while in the mystical
trance of the sama. For them,
prayer is the sama, accompanied
by music and song .
The oldest woman in the vil
lage, Mother Bağdat (Bagdad),
tells the story of her mother's
death with tears in her eyes.
"My mother was very strong, a
believing woman. She knew the

There are certain beliefs tied to
clothes among the Turkmen. This
is why garments and jewelry are
engraved on old tombstones . . .
üne example of this i s the
"clothing" rite. After the dead per
son is washed and cleaned, tradi
tion has it that he is dressed in
his underwear. Yunus says,

Yunus describes the "name

"They'll plant a slat at my head

Turkmen women are buried in
