ASSIGNMENT

Biological safety and Risk managment

APRIL 26, 2023

SARA MARYAM
Roll no 30
Laboratory safety handbook

Summary:
The laboratory health and safety program is run by committee. It includes
documentation as well as application, but persons’ safety depends on him/ herself.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) mainly used for safety and should be wear
proper PPE while performing operations. Engineering also be useful in protecting
people from hazards such as fume hoods, safety cabinets etc. Administrative control
includes the procedures that ensures the safe laboratory work and is set as a
standard in the laboratory. Relevant to these safety and health work there are some
standard operating procedures. There must be safety board’s includes the signs for
the hazard if present. For personal safety, eating, drinking and applying makeup is
not allowed. Glassware’s in the laboratory are made by considering the compatibity
of chemicals and procedures performed at the laboratory. Risk of injuries and
accidents can be minimized by proper handling of the glasswares while
experimenting. Its proper disposal also necessary for the other’s safety. Biosafety
levels are the levels that are basically the precautions for the biocontainment and the
isolation of hazardous material in a closed facility. There are 4 biosafety levels from
biosafety level 1 to biosafety level 4. Biosafety level 1 is for those agents that not
easily cause he disease in humans. Biosafety level 2 is also for those that are
moderate hazardous to personnel and environment. Biosafety level 3 is for clinical ,
teaching, research, or production facilities in which work that is done is very lethal to
cause disease in humans. Biosafety level 4 is require for the work that cause fatal
diseases in humans, cause infections for which proper treatments are not available.
Biosafety cabinets also have 3 classes, Class l BSC, class ll BSC, class lll BSC.
Safety data sheet is also helpful and play role in safety during working in lab. The
safety data sheet includes all the physical and chemical properties of the all
substances and the safety precaution for all those substances. There are also safe
work practices that include some general regulations as not to eat or drink or smoke
and other chemical handing, storage and procedures to handle the emergency
situations. There are also the proper guidelines for spillage of the chemicals so it will
not cause harm to others. There are 3 types of carcinogens. Category 1 include the
established human carcinogens. Category 2 includes the probable human
carcinogens. Category 3 are those that are suspected to have the carcinogenic
potential in humans. Cryogenic liquid that are usually stores in a vacuum jacketed
containers and has property to evaporate as have normal boiling point of -150 o C. All
these cryogenic liquids are extremely cold as freeze the human’s tissues. Safety
from these cryogenic liquids are usually by using the PPE. There are various
electrical devices in the laboratories. There is need for their proper handling and
maitainence otherwise it can cause the insecure conditions for working and health
hazards for the laboratory users. So the sources of electricity and the exposed
circuits must be guarded. In cold rooms the use of electrical devices must be
minimum. Mechanical safety is also the important part in the laboratory safety
program as machine shops facility must be maintained and regulated for safe
working environments. Mechanical tools are of two types such as the manual (not
fully covered) and CNCs (fully covered). Implementations of the measures that
minimize the hazards originate from the radioactive materials and radiation emitting
devices is the best decision for the Sabanci University. Concept of dose limitation is
used in the radiation protection by workers. Turkish standards for radiation safety
and the waste management are used. Laser safety is also important because laser is
used as research tool in University. The maintenance of responses kits are
necessary for the laboratory potential use. They should be inspected annually as to
check If they are ready to use. So we can say that last but not the least , all the
chemicals, devices, glasses or machines that are used in labs must be handled and
maintained in the same way as described or mentioned in the Laboratory safety
program so it will reults in safety of a person itself and of others.
