Business Case: Student Registration System

You have been tasked to help design a student registration system for a post-secondary
institution. This system will be the primary book of record for student information and will
include:
 Personal information (name, date of birth, etc.)
 Student ID
 Contact information (phone number, mailing address, email addresses, etc.)
 Emergency contact information
 Health care number
 Current program of study and credits earned
 The date they were entered into the system

Most of these data are populated manually by the administrative team using information pulled
from the student’s application. Students can update their secondary email address, phone
numbers and mailing address, but they must contact the student service centre to request any
other updates to their student profile. For emergency purposes, the students must provide their
health care number and emergency contact information, which is only visible to administrative
users and department leadership (e.g., the program chair).

While this system is not responsible for processing payments, any students who receive grants
or scholarships from the school or government will have a note on their profile. Any previous
post-secondary diplomas or degrees are also listed.

Students using the system can view all classes being offered, register for classes and view their
own schedule. Registration for each semester opens approximately three months before the
start of term, and the administrative team is responsible for populating these dates.

Some courses have prerequisites: students are unable to register for these courses if they have
not successfully passed all prerequisite courses. However, administrative users can register any
student for any course within their current program of study.

Some courses have a waitlist: students may be added to the waitlist if a course is full. If another
student withdraws, the first student on the waitlist will be automatically enrolled in the course.

Instructors can see all classes being offered, view their own schedule and view the class lists for
all the courses they are teaching in the current and upcoming semester. The class list shows
them a student’s ID, full name, primary email address and program of study.

Important: Do not make any assumptions when designing this system. Ask your client (your
instructor) for any clarification needed.
