1. General
The factory in Mariestad is introducing a new assortment of electronically
controlled fridges and freezers. Electronics control and display the temperature
in the freezer and fridge respectively.

The control panel for the new electronic control has a slightly different
appearance depending on the design model. However the electronics
themselves are the same.

NOTE!
Circuit boards and wiring (including sensor wiring)
! have a voltage of 230 V.

1.1. Temperature selector / Thermostat

Use the temperature selector to set the required temperature, press the
“+”button for warmer and press the “-”button for colder temperatures.

The first time any of the buttons are pressed the thermometer shows in
flashing digits the previously required temperature. Now you can begin to set
the required temperature by pressing “+” or “-”. The set temperature is
displayed by flashing light. After 5 seconds the flashing stops and the
thermometer displays the temperature of the cabinet again.

This feature allows you to check the setting by pressing one of the buttons “+”
or “-” once without changing the set value.

When restarting the cabinet after “off” position the temperature does not need
to be reset. The electronic control will automatically set it to the previously set
temperature.

3
Door switch
The traditional switch has been removed Reed-element
and replaced by a “Reed element” on the
circuit card and a foamed in magnet in
the in the middle of the end cap of the
upper frame of the upper door.
(see figure).

Function test door switch

Magnet
Test the Reed element by moving a
loose magnet below the center of the
front panel. If the lamp in the cabinet
goes out the function is OK.

Control if there is a magnet in the door

with a piece of iron.

1.3. Thermometers
1.3.1. Fridge thermometer

The thermometer displays a steady light:

- when the thermometer shows the temperature in the cabinet

The thermometer flashes:

- while the temperature is being set by the temperature selector

The thermometer shows

- if the temperature gauge has stopped working for instance due to a sensor
failure

Lower or higher temperatures than -35°C or +39°C are indicated as sensor failure.

- The thermometer shows the average temperature in the fridge. The

cabinet temperature varies depending on the type of cabinet. Generally it is
coldest on the shelf under the drip slot and warmest at the top of the
cabinet.
- In order to avoid heavy fluctuations around the set point a “temperature
window” of +/-2°C has been allowed around this set value. At temperatures
within this “window” the set point is displayed. At temperatures outside the
“window” the actual value is displayed. The thermometer has a maximum

4
changing speed of 1°C every 10th minute in warm direction and 1°C every
5th minute in cold direction.
It is essential that no warm articles are placed close to the two sensors
in the fridge since faulty displays and/or faulty operation cycles might
then occur.

1.3.2. Freezer thermometer

The thermometer shows a steady light:

- when the thermometer shows the temperature in the cabinet

The thermometer flashes:

- while the temperature is being set by the temperature selector
- at temperature alarm
The thermometer shows:
- if the temperature gauge has stopped working for instance due to sensor
failure

Lower or higher temperatures than -35°C or +39°C are indicated as sensor failure.

The freezer thermometer shows the temperature of the warmest part of the
freezer. This means that other temperatures in the cabinet (which can be
measured with an ordinary thermometer) always are lower than the
temperature shown by the thermometer. The warmest part in the freezer
varies depending on the type of the cabinet, but it is generally at the top in the
front part of the freezer at the door sealing. The difference in temperature
between that measured in the middle of the cabinet (not measured directly
against the freezing system) and the warmest part of the freezer may vary
between 3 and 7°C.

In order to avoid heavy fluctuations around the set point a “temperature

window” of +/-2°C has been allowed around this set value. At temperatures
within this “window” the set point is displayed. At temperatures outside the
“window” the actual value is displayed. The thermometer has a maximum
changing speed of 1°C every 5th minute in cold and 1°C every 20th minute in
warm direction.

It is essential that no warm articles are placed close to the sensors in the
freezer, for instance when freezing articles since faulty displays and/or
faulty operations cycles might then occur.

5
1.4. Alarm

1.4.1. Temperature alarm, freezer

The alarm is activated when the warmest part in the freezer (= the indicated
temperature) reaches –11°C. The red warning light flashes and the acoustic
alarm sounds intermittently. The temperature is displayed by the thermometer
with flashing digits.

You can switch the acoustic alarm off by pressing the general reset button.
When the acoustic alarm has been turned off the thermometer shows the
temperature with a steady light. The red warning lamp continues to flash as
long as the cabinet temperature remains -11°C or warmer. When the cabinet
has turned cold again the red warning lamp turns off.

If the cabinet automatically reaches a temperature below the alarm level -11°C
but the alarm has not been reset by the button (for instance after a short power
failure and nobody was at home) the acoustic alarm will reset itself. However
the thermometer will in such cases show the temperature of the cabinet with a
flashing light and the warning lamp will also flash. This is due to the fact that
the electronic circuit has a memory function. After one push on the reset
button the thermometer will during 5 seconds show the highest temperature
reached in the freezer and the red warning lamp will turn off.

1.4.2. Door alarm

The warning light starts to flash and the acoustic alarm sounds when:
• the fridge door has remained open for approximately 5 minutes.
• the freezer door has remained open for approximately 80 seconds.

Turn the acoustic signal off by pressing the reset button. The red warning lamp
turns off when the door is closed. If the door is not closed a new alarm will
start after approx. 5 minutes (fridge) and approx. 80 seconds (freezer).

At repeated alarms check the function of the door switch according to the
function test door switch.

1.4.3. Reset button for alarm

The reset button is used to switch the acoustic alarm off when there is a door
opening alarm and/or temperature alarm. This button is also used to switch the
warning lamp off and to show the highest temperature after an alarm.

6
1.5. Freezing/fast cooling
1.5.1. Freezing

When the freezing function is activated the compressor starts to work

continuously. The freezing function is automatically interrupted after appr. 50
hours. The freezing process may also be interrupted manually.

The freezer compressor has minimum deceleration time of 20 minutes. “At

worst” it thus may take 20 minutes before the compressor will start after the
freezing has been turned on.

1.5.2. Fast cooling

When the fast cooling function is activated the thermostat is automatically

switched to +2°C. The fast cooling is automatically interrupted after appr. 6
hours. The fast cooling process may also be interrupted manually.

1.6. Temperature sensors

1.6.1. General

The cabinet contains temperature sensors, NTC, for temperature reading.

Fridge/freezers has three sensors; one inside the freezer and two in the fridge.
The two sensors in the fridge are located on the evaporator, and in the air
resp. Fridges contains two sensors and freezers one sensor. The sensors are
“keyed” and fit in only one way in the contact housing of the circuit card.

NOTE!
It is of utmost importance that the cable inlets for the
sensors are absolutely tight. Poor sealing causes heat
! from the condensor to be conducted to the sensors. This
will influence the control and display of the thermometers.

1.General
Dynamic Cooler is a new kind of refrigerator where the air is distributed by a fan in the
compartment. A fin evaporator is diagonally placed along the inner side of the back of the
compartment. This is to obtain a more even airflow through the evaporator and also a
more uniform temperature in the compartment.
The air is suctioned through the fan grid with a radial blower, thereafter the air is blown
through the fin evaporator. At the transport of the air through the fins there is a conduction
of heat from the warm air to the evaporation of the refrigerant. The air then cools down.
The cool air is then distributed into the compartment where the warmer goods are cooled
down.
The temperature in the compartment is regulated with an air sensor at the right side of the
compartment. To guarantee the defrosting of the evaporator there is also a sensor at the
bottom of the evaporator tube.

2.Regulating
• The temperature in the compartment is regulated with an air sensor and an evaporator
sensor.
• When the air sensor is warmer than the cut-in temperature and when the evaporator
sensor is warmer than the defrost temperature, the fan starts and with 1 minutes delay
the compressor starts.
• When the air sensor temperature is lower than the cut-out value, the compressor stops
immediately while the fan stops with 5 minutes delay.
• When the door is opened the fan stops immediately while the compressor continues
for another 2 minutes. If the door then still is open the compressor also stops.
• An extra defrost period when only the fan runs for 45 minutes comes with an interval
between 2 and 4 days. It is the accumulated uptime of the compressor that decides
when this period shall occur depending on how much the refrigerator has to work.

8.Evaporator
8.1 General
As heat-absorbing surface is a fin evaporator used where the fins are attached to the
evaporator tube with equal distances between all the fins. The air flows along the surface
of the fins and there is a heat transfer between the air and the fins. Thereafter the heat is
transferred to the evaporator tube where it contributes to the evaporation of the
refrigerant. This heat transfer process makes the temperature of the air sink during its
transport between the fins and cold air can be distributed into the compartment.
Because of the design of the fins it is very important that the fins are not deformed. If that
should occur the water might not drains during the defrosting.

9.Sensors
9.1 General

The refrigerator contains two temperature sensors, NTC, for measurement of the
temperature.
One sensor is placed in the air, the other on the evaporator.
The sensors are "coded" and can only be correctly assembled in the socket on the PCB.
The coding can be seen on the picture below.

Attention!
It is extremely important that the different conduit entries are completely
tight. If the entries are not tight, heat is transferred in to the sensors. This
will have an influence on the regulating of the refrigerator and on what
the thermometer displays.

Operations:

Evaporator sensor:
1. Remove the lover protective cover.
2. Loosen the lower evaporator holder and bulb fastener holder by turning the retaining
screw a half turn.
3. Pull the bulb out of the bulb fastener.

Air sensor:
1. Remove all protective covers, the upper protective cover by also removing the
connection to the fan.
2. Remove the two screws and loosen the air sensor holder.
3. The new air sensor wiring shall be routed under the suction tube according to the
picture above.

10.Printed circuit board (PCB)

10.1 Exchange of the printed circuit board

At exchange of the PCB, chassis complete with the PCB shall always be exchanged. Note
that chassis complete is return coded and shall be returned to the factory in original packing
together with the service order.

Chassis complete 226 22 66-01/4

Operations at exchange of the PCB: 1. Loosen the upper door by unscrewing

the pivot pin from above.
Open the control panel by ….
2. Dismantle the top by loosening the two
rear screws and then pull the top
forward in order to enable it to pass by
the pivots. This action must be taken
because the halogen transformer is too
large to be removed through the front.
3. Loosen the front panel by way of the
three snap fixings at the upper side of
the panel.
4. Secure the door by taping or by
screwing home the pivot pin.
5. Release the cover in front of the
controls (only for Electrolux models).
6. Loosen the chassis by first snapping
loose possible lamp glass.
7. Bend the front part carefully while
simultaneously snapping the chassis
from its fixings by pulling it in a
downward direction.

Exchange of the printed circuit board without halogen lighting

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

Compressors for R134a

- The replacement of CFC refrigerants (R12), considered being one of the causes of the gradual destruction
of the ozone layer in the atmosphere, with HFC refrigerants (R134a) have led to the production of a new
series of compressors which take into consideration the different physical and thermodynamic properties of
the two refrigerating fluids.

The differences between R134a and R12 are the following:

- Higher compression pressure

- Lower evaporation pressure
- Lower density, both as a liquid and as vapour (especially at low temperature)

R134a compressors have a new internal design and use a new ester-type lubricating oil.

This new type of oil is necessary because mineral oil is not soluble in the new R134a.

The new oil has other favourable characteristics: it is, for example, highly biodegradable.
However, it is also very hygroscopic and readily absorbs water and water vapour from the air.

The compressor range for R134a includes the following series:

"GL" ZEM series

"GLY" ZEM series
“GQY” ZEM series
"OF" VERDICHTER series
"GD" UNIDAD HERMETICA series
“DB” MATSUSHITA series
“THB” TECUMSEH series

As there are different refrigerant fluids and different constructive and functional features of the compressors,
their specific use is binding for the type of gas that is filled in the appliance that must be filled or in case of
replacement of the compressor because it is out of order.

The GL series has the following versions: "AA", "AH”, “AK” and “AH-HT"
"AA” is the standard version;
"AH” is the high efficiency version;
"AK" is the high efficiency version with higher electric motor; this last device allows switching on the
compressor in critical conditions,
"AH-HT is the high efficiency version with higher electric motor which can guarantee a good functionality at
high temperatures.

For all versions follow the instructions of the suction and service pipes connection.

In "AH and AK" versions the use of a running capacitor is mandatory.

NOTE: in some cases, for production necessity, these compressors have been used with a right suction
pipe, accepting therefore the rise of absorbed power.

GQ series identifies the compressors of “resting” type that have lower noise levels, in fact, in the
compressors of ”resting” type, the suspension internal springs of the electric motor are positioned at the
bottom of the compressor casing while in the compressors of “hanging” type the springs are positioned in the
centre of the casing.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

Compressors for R600a

At the beginning of 1994 the R600a or Isobutane (CH4H10) and the R134a (HFC) have replaced the R12
(CFC).

R600a is a flammable Hydrocarbon. Hydrocarbons have the property to disperse in the atmosphere in a
short period of time (weeks).

The physical and thermodynamic properties of R600a slightly differ from the properties of the R134a and of
the R12.

To compensate for the different efficiency characteristics of the new refrigerant a specific range of high
efficiency and low noise compressors has been produced.

The compressors take into consideration the different characteristics of the fluid:

- Lower compression pressure

- Very low evaporation pressure
- Lower density both as liquid and as vapour (especially at low temperatures).

These compressors have undergone an increase in displacement in order to compensate the different yield
of Isobutane while at the same time using motors of limited power.

The range of R600a compressors includes the following series:

"HL" ZEM series

“HLY” ZEM series
“HPT” ZEM series
“HQY” ZEM series
“HQT” ZEM series
“HQM” ZEM series
“HTK” VERDICHTER series
"HV" VERDICHTER series
"HVY" VERDICHTER series
"HP" UNIDAD HERMETICA series
"FGS" EMBRACO series
“TL” DANFOSS series
“NBK” ASPERA series
“NBT” ASPERA series
“EMU” ASPERA series
“BP” ASPERA series

All above models have an internal muffle with semi-direct suction of the refrigerant. To take advantage of
their full efficiency it is indispensable that suction and service pipes be connected according to the
instructions (suction line should never be connected to service pipe and vice versa).

All are equipped with a PTC for starting and a running capacitor.

For safety reasons the overload cut-out is no longer "open" but sealed with a plug.

The lubricating oil can be of the normal type or synthetic. These oils in fact mix optimally with the
Hydrocarbons and do not create any hygroscopicity problems.

As far as operating pressures and temperatures are concerned these compressors have lower noise levels
and operate at lower temperatures.

5/38
Like for R134a the use of the specific compressor is binding for the type of refrigerant fluid that is filled in the
appliance that must be filled or in case of replacement of the compressor because it is out of order.

HQ and HTK series identify the compressors of “resting” type that have lower noise levels, in fact, in the
compressors of “resting” type, the internal suspension springs of the electric motor are positioned at the
bottom of the compressor casing while in the “hanging” compressors the springs are positioned in the centre
of the casing.

The “Q” range identifies the compressors of resting type (as the previous picture ZEM 5) but with the
following differences:
ƒ The junction box, called “ K “, has changed and has a new displacement of the contacts, therefore, in
case this compressor is used to replace one of a different type, it is necessary to carry out the electric
connections as shown in ZEM 6a picture;
ƒ The new cover of the junction box has a different hooking system so as to comply with the safety rules.
In ZEM 6b picture it is represented the demounting procedure of the junction box cover ;
ƒ The new service pipe is 93 mm. long and has a Ø 6 mm. external diameter, thus leading to a distinction
of the two following cases :
‰ in case of replacement of the compressor, the advantage is that it is not necessary to lenghten the
service pipe to load the refrigerant, thus avoiding to carry out a sealing;
‰ in case of operation on the compressor, if it is necessary to lenghten the service pipe, before
carrying out any forge weldings, it is MANDATORY to follow the evacuation rules of R600a gas.
Alternatevely it is possible to use also the LOKRING joints.
The A end of the copper pipe with no. 2219390016 (ZEM 6c picture) to lenghten the service pipe is

COMPRESSOR – WATER DEFROST TRAY MATCHING

In case of replacement of a compressor, it is necessary to compare the tray no. described in the spare parts
list with the no. described in the A table because if they are different it will be necessary to replace not only
the compressor, but also the defrost water tray, see no. in A table.

IMPORTANTE: the defrost water tray is an important element to guarantee a good functioning of
the appliance and its safety. Therefore it is necessary that the tray adheres perfectly to the
compressor casing and that it samples all the water coming from the drain channel, so trays
incompatible with the compressors should not be used.

In some appliances of the same range, the drain channel finds in different positions therefore it is necessary
to use trays with extra compartments to sample the water.

Drop protection DME (refrigerator with fan)
When the evaporator is defrosted on this kind of products it could, under certain
climate conditions with high humidity, create so much defrost water at the same time
that the drainage gutter is flooded and the water comes at the bottom of the cabinet
and further out on the floor.
The drop protection stops the water and spread it over the drainage gutter.
The drop protection assembles with tape on the lower part of the lower evaporator
holder, see picture. Make sure that the left edge of the drop protection is placed
above the centre of the drainage hole. Check also that the drainage hole is not
plugged. The drop protection is part of a kit, which can be ordered from Distriparts
Torsvik. The kit consists of the drop protection and this service bulletin, and has part

SAFETY REGULATIONS WHEN WORKING WITH ISOBUTANE

Isobutane is a refrigerant which forms an explosive mixture with air (1.8 -

8.4% isobutane). The effects of an explosion of such a mixture can be
very severe. It is therefore exceedingly important that the following
safety regulations are observed at all times when working with isobutane.

At the service station:

– The amount of isobutane stored within the service station must be kept to a minimum. The
maximum amounts of inflammable gases such as isobutane or welding gas which may be
stored in the station are specified by local regulations.
– Isobutane may only be stored at the service station in spaces intended for this purpose.
Such spaces are to be close to external doors and must be marked with standard warning
notices. The space is to be provided with a gas warning device for the detection of isobu-
tane.
– The space in which isobutane is stored must be a no-smoking space. No work with open
flame is to be performed in this space.

In the service truck:

– Only isobutane required for day-to-day service work, stored in approved pressure vessels
may be stored in the service truck.
– The vessels containing isobutane must be secured in the service truck during transport.
– A gas warning device must be carried in the service truck when isobutane is transported.
– Smoking is not permitted in the service truck when isobutane is transported.
– Compressors containing isobutane which are removed from refrigeration units may not be
transported in the service truck if the oil has not been drained or all compressor connections
sealed with LOCK-Ring couplings.

At the customer:
– Only service personnel who have been trained in the handling of isobutane and
understand the risks involved may perform work on refrigeration units in which isobutane is
used.
– Smoking by both the service personnel and the customer’s personnel is prohibited during
the service visit.
– Clothing e.g. of acryl, which can generate static electricity discharges is not to be worn by
service personnel.
– Work in confined spaces such as closets is to be avoided. Move the unit on which work is to
be performed to a larger room.
– All work with open flames is forbidden. Lock-Ring couplings are to be used for all
joints.
– No vacuum cleaning or work with electrical heating devices (hair dryers, heating fans) is per-
mitted during the service visit.
– Only original spare parts or spare parts recommended by Distri Parts may be used. Home
made service aids such as electrical water heaters or own starting devices may not be
used.
– When isobutane is removed from a refrigeration system, the refrigerant is to be
drained via a hose through a window to the open air.
– The electrical recharge/charge stations must be approved for explisive gases.

WHAT ARE HC and ISOBUTANE?

HC is an abbreviation of HydroCarbons, i.e. inorganic compounds with molecules
consisting of carbon and hydrogen only. HC-refrigerants were largely used during the
1920’s before being superseded by other compounds. Propane, C3H8, was that
most frequently used and then in relatively large installations. The following table
shows the simplest HC-refrigerants.

4 HC-Info, Isobutan

HC refrigerants have no effect on the ozone layer as their molecules contain no chlorine at-
oms. Their contribution to the glass-house effect (GWP) is very small. In a comparison in
which the effect of CO2 is given as 1, the effect of HC refrigerants is 3, R12 7500 and R134a
1200. In practice therefore, the GWP for the HC-refrigerants is 0. Table 2 gives ODP and
GWP for the most usual refrigerants including R600a (isobutane) and R290 (propane).

The major disadvantage of HC-refrigerants is their inflammability. In the case of isobutane, a

mixture of air and 1.8-8.4 % volume of isobutane is inflammable.
It is most probable that most future products using HC-refrigerants will use isobutane. Isobu-
tane is a relatively stable gas with an estimated service life of more than 20 years. Propane is
another suitable refrigerant but because of its low boiling point requires a large pressure in-
crease and thereby generates considerable noise when used in a compressor. Various mix-
tures of HC-refrigerants have also been investigated and may be used in the future. The
German company Foron which, in collaboration with Greenpeace, developed a refrigerator
with HC some years ago, use a mixture of isobutane and propane. Mixtures of different HC re-
frigerants are non-azeotropic, i.e. they do not behave as homogenous refrigerants but boiling
and condensation of the constituents of the mixture take place separately. This gives a vary-
ing evaporation temperature and can cause sound phenomena.
Isobutane as a refrigerant is given the designation R600a. It is colourless and odourless. The
technical data of R600a is given in the following table:

HC-Info, Isobutan 5

There is a risk of the development of an inflammable air/isobutane mixture with a re-

frigerant leakage or servicing work in a confined space. The figure below indicates if
a certain leakage can give a critical mixture in a certain closed space. If the space is
particularly small, the unit concerned should be moved to a larger space for servic-
ing.

R600a has considerably lower evaporation and condensation pressures (at the same
temperature) than R12 and R134a. The following table provides a comparison of the
three refrigerants.

-40 0,29 0,52 0,64

Note that isobutane boils already at -11.7°C at atmospheric pressure. This means
that the low-pressure side usually has a pressure less than atmospheric.
The use of isobutane as a refrigerant requires a high degree of purity. A suitable qual-
ity is designated "isobutane 2.5" with a purity of 99.5%.
Because of the explosion risk with R600a, units using it are subject to a number of
modifications. All components which can generate sparks must be moved outside
the refrigeration room to avoid explosion with any internal leakage. This means that
thermostats, lighting switches etc. must be located on an external control panel.
Lighting in the refrigerated space is only permitted if the lamp-cable connection is en-
capsuled and the cable is electrically connected outside the space. Lamps in such an
installation may only be replaced by service personnel. Refrigerators with foam-cov-
ered evaporators may have electrical details inside the cabinet as it is then consid-
ered that any leakage of refrigerant will not enter the cabinet.

JOINTS/LOCK-RING
No soldering work is permitted on refrigerator units which contain or have contained
isobutane or other types of HC-refrigerants. All joints are to be made with the help of
Lock-Ring.
Lock-Ring is available in two different materials, brass and aluminium, the choice be-
ing dependent on the piping material.

Piping material Lock-Ring material

Alu-alu Aluminium
Alu-copper Aluminium
Alu-steel Aluminium
Copper-copper Brass
Copper-steel Brass
Steel-steel Brass

Installation of Lock-Ring coupling:

1) Clean the ends to be joined with steel wool or fine emery cloth. The abrasive
should be rotated around the end of the pipe to avoid longitudinal scratches.

To ensure a tight seal, the Lock-Ring coupling must be applied at a straight

length of pipe.

2) Apply Lockprep to the pipe ends to be joined. Lockprep fills in the uneveness on
the pipe surfaces. Note that the Lockprep must be of a type resistant to isobu-
tane.
3) Mount both the pipe ends in the Lock-Ring coupling and rotate the pipe 360 de-
grees so that the Lockprep flows out over the pipe surfaces.
4) Press the coupling together with the help of the hand tool. The coupling can be
loaded after 2-3 minutes.

COMPRESSOR FOR HC-REFRIGERANTS

Special compressors have been developed for isobutane. The swept volume must
be approximately doubled compared with R134a but the motor power need not be in-
creased to any degree. Certain larger compressors will be physically larger because
of the larger pump which is not accommodated in the enclosures used currently.
Compressors for HC-refrigerants are filled with mineral oil.
ZEM and Danfoss already have a relatively wide range of HC-compressors. Data for
ZEM-compressors are given below. It should be noted that this compressor data is
very much preliminary and certain adjustments will be probably be necessary in pro-
duction versions.

DESICCANT FOR R600a

Union Carbide XH9 (or equal) is to be used as a desiccant for R600a. This desiccant
can also be used for R12 or R134a.
Desiccants for R600a in service are to be in quantities weighing at least 15 grams.
Note that the desiccant is always to be replaced after repairs to the refrigeration unit.
In the case of larger refrigerating units, or for systems with fine bore capillary tubes, it
may be appropriate to use a service desiccant with three connecting pipes. The third
connecting pipe is then used as an extra service pipe and the evacuation is per-
formed from both the low and the high pressure sides.

LEAKS / LEAK TRACING

The pressure on the low pressure side of a refrigerating unit working with isobutane
is usually below atmospheric pressure. This means that the indications of leaks are
different from those in units using R12 or R134a.
a) Leaks on the high-pressure side are comparable with leaks of R12/R134a. The
complete or part of the filling then leaks out and the pressure drops toward 1
atm. The refrigerant normally leaks completely relatively quickly.
b) Leaks on the low-pressure side result in air being sucked into the system. The
pressure then rises on both the high and low pressure sides. As the refrigerant
is mixed with air, the partial pressure of the refrigerant drops and boiling begins
at a very low temperature. Typical for these leaks are the
• very low temperature at the injection and
• falling temperature after the evaporator, The pressure and temperature
on the high pressure side increase considerably.
To locate a leak, an amount of refrigerant larger than that specified on the data plate
should be introduced into the system. This is intended to increase the pressure in the
system. As an alternative, the system can be filled with nitrogen to a maximum pres-
sure of 10 bars. A portable isobutane detector can then be used to locate any leak.
Soap and water can be used as an alternative. Detectors for R12 or R134a cannot
be used for R600a. Certain leak detectors for R12 or R134a heat the gas and such
detectors can be directly dangerous when used for isobutane.
Note that the system must be carefully evacuated after the tracing of a leak as the
refrigerant is pressed into the oil. (see the section on evacuation below).
HC-Info, Isobutan 9

DRAINAGE OF THE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM

The procedure for draining a refrigeration system containing isobutane is different
from that of systems containing R12 or R134a. This is because, for examples:
a) systems with R600a contain considerably less refrigerant than those using R12
or R134a. A small 150 liter refrigerator can, for example, contain approximately
20 grams R600a.
b) the equilibrium pressure for the system with R600a is lower than for systems
with R12 or R134a.
c) at room temperature, a large part of the refrigerant is dissolved in the com-
pressor’s oil.

Draining procedure
1 Connect the puncturing pliers on the service tube. Run the purging hose from the
discharge outlet via a mnometer (e.g. the vacuum pump) to the outside air.

NOTE! Drainage indoors is highly dangerous!

2 Drain the system while checkin g the manometer. Open the door to unit in order to
evaporatre refrigerant inside. If the drainage must be speeded up, an other
puncturing pliers can be connected to the high pressure side.
3 Vibrate the compressor and check the manometer. End the draining procedure at
1 atm.

NOTE! To avoid entrance of air and humidity into the system, NO vacuum
pumping must be done!

4 Cut the tube if the system should be opend.

NOTE! The system contins isobutane and no soldering/welding is permitted.

5 The replaced compressor must be sealed with Lock-Ring or the oil must be
drained before transporting the compressor in the service van.
10 HC-Info, Isobutan

VACUUM PUMP PROCEDURE

Due to the high solubility of refrigerant in the oil, the vacuum pump procedure is
somewhat changed:

1. System with new compressor.

If the compressor have been changed the system can be vacuum pumped in a
normal way..

Note! The electrical vacuumpump must be approved for explosive gases.

The replaced compressor must be sealed with Lock-Ring or the oil must be drained
before transporting the compressor in the service van.

2. System where the compressor has not been changed.

A: (electric vacuum pump)

1. Vacuum pump for 10 minutes..
2. Run the compressor for 1 minute
3. Vacuum pump for 5 minutes.
4. Run the compressor for 1 minute.
5. Vacuum pump for 3 minutes.

B: (for Manne hand pump)

1. Vacuum pump 25 strokes
2. Wait 1 minute, vibrate the compressor.
3. Vacuum pump 10 strokes.
4. Run the compressor 1 minute, vibrate the compressor.
5. Vacuum pump 10 strokes.
6. Run the compressor 1 minute, vibrate the compressor.
7. Vacuum pump 5 strokes.
HC-Info, Isobutan 11

FILLING THE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM

Systems using R600a require considerably less refrigerant than those using R12 or
R134a. This means that refilling with R600a requires particular care. The following
are alternative practical methods:
a) volume-based filling, i.e. filling in the same way as with the measuring glass
used today. By adapting the measuring glass and the filling equipment to the
new refrigerant, the method used currently can be used. It is important that the
measuring glass should have a smaller diameter so that the quantity can be
measured with greater accuracy. The filling tubes should also be shorter and of
smaller diameter.
b) Filling with prefilled ampoules. If it is possible to purchase prefilled ampoules con-
taining the exact refill volume, these can be used as disposable containers.
Note that it then becomes necessary to keep in stock ampoules containing all
refill quantities required for the work to be performed.
c) Weight-based filling. The serviceman fills the unit with the help of a refrigerant
flask placed on a scales. Such equipment with sufficient accuracy is not yet
available for use in the field.
As refrigeration units using R600a work at such low pressure on the low pressure
side, there is a great risk that air will be sucked into the system. A filling system in ac-
cordance with the following is recommended to minimize the risk of leakage of air
into the system during the filling.

Working procedure:
1. When the evacuation is com-
plete, open the valve (5)
carefully and admit the cor-
rect amount of refrigerant to
the system.
2. Start the compressor and
permit it to work for at least
5 minutes. This sucks the
compressor’s supply tube
free from refrigerant.
3. Close the valve (7) on the
supply tube and close the
service tube by crimping
with locking pliers.
4. Switch off the compressor
and open the door of the
refrigerated space. Wait at
least 5 minutes. The
pressure now rises on the
low- pressure side and the
risk of air leakage into the
system decreases.
5. Finally crop the service tube and fix a LockRing coupling on the end of the tube.
Release the locking pliers.
Note that so-called Schrader valves cannot be used in refrigerating units using
R600a as they do not seal when under partial vacuum.
