A web address is the internet or intranet location of a website, file or database. Using a web address,
users can visit a website, download a file or send an email. Just like with regular addresses that are
usually in the country, city or town, street, apartment or a house format, there are different degrees of
specification for a URL: There’s the network addresses or website (such as Google, Facebook, loweb,
etc.) the top level domain (such as .com ; .io ; org ; etc.) the folder, the subfolder, and the file or the
page.
1.2 Define the term “domain suffix” and explain its importance in identifying a website.
Websites are grouped by their domain suffix according to the type of information they provide. The
domain suffix can provide you with a hint about who has created the site or what their intent is. The
domain suffix might also give you a clue about the geographic origin of a website.
1.3 How can you determine the domain suffix of a website from its web address?
You can determine the domain suffix of a website from its web address by looking at the end of the
domain name (the .com part).
1.4 Explain the domain suffixes “.com”, “.org”, “.gov”, “.mil”, and “.edu”.
“.com” : states for commercial site which is all about making a profit, not all “.com” sites are selling
items. It’s a common domain open and available for anyone.
“.org” : is for non-profit organisations and it’s open for anyone, used by many schools, community
groups and for profit groups. This domain requires further investigation before it’s proven reliable.
“.gov” : Is for government site and it’s at national and the state level.
“.mil” : Is for military site and it’s used by the U.S military and information at this site are reliable.
“.edu” : Is for educational institutions. It was created for the U.S educational and academic institutions
such as universities, colleges, or research institutions.
1.5 With the above identified domain suffixes in question 1.4, provide examples of websites that use
each suffix.
