ABSTRACT
The information communication technology has made a huge impact in our daily activities. It has
brought the revolutionary changes in every social, economic, and legal sector. Our paper presents
the application of ICT during different construction phases i.e., predesigned, design, construction,
operation, and maintenance.

Here we discuss about how ICT has made the construction works easier, cost effective and faster
in grade one-construction companies in Ethiopia.

1 INTRODUCTION
Information communication technology has brought an industrial revolution in the construction
process throughout the world. It has brought comprehensive improvement in the performance of
construction process in terms of expenditure, time, and quality and client satisfaction. In modern
days, ICT can be implemented into different phases and process of construction project. Here, in
Ethiopia, the construction sector is booming, and many companies are vying to be among the top
providers of construction services in the country construction process representing the whole life
cycle of the construction, including predesigned, design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
Use of ICT improves co-ordination, process and collaboration between customer, contractor, and
engineer.

2 Literature Review
2.1 The construction Process and The Need for IT

Several studies have investigated the use of ICT in the construction industry,
highlighting its benefits in improving project management, reducing costs, and enhancing
collaboration and communication among stakeholders.

One study by Alshawi et al. (2013) explored the adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM)
in the construction industry and found that BIM implementation can significantly improve the
accuracy and efficiency of project planning and execution. Another study by Arayici et al. (2011)
investigated the use of ICT in construction supply chain management and concluded that the
adoption of ICT tools such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems can improve supply
chain efficiency and reduce project costs.

ICT tools such as project management software, AutoCAD, civil3D modeling, eagle point and
virtual reality (VR) are also being increasingly used in construction project planning and
execution. A study by Wang et al. (2019) examined the use of VR technology for construction site
visualization and found that it can improve project planning and communication among
stakeholders.

Overall, the literature suggests that the use of ICT in construction project planning and execution
can bring significant benefits to construction companies, including improved project efficiency,
cost reduction, and enhanced collaboration among stakeholders. As such, it is recommended that
construction companies consider the adoption of ICT tools to improve their project management
processes.

3 Methodology
The research methodology used in this study is the qualitative research method. Data was collected
from the five Grade one construction companies in Ethiopia through interviews and observation.
The research focused on the ICT technology being used in planning, designing, and construction
activities in both road and building sectors.

The five construction companies are SAMSON CHERINET Construction, China WU-YI
Construction, ASER construction, RAMA Construction and BAMACON Engineering PLC.

3.2 Conclusion of Results

In recent years, Ethiopia has made significant progress in developing its ICT infrastructure. Based
on the above questionaries’ we can conclude that most of grade one construction companies use
various ICT technologies for planning , designing and construction process such as MS-EXEL,MS
PROJECT,ETABS,SAP,AUTOCAD,INROADS,CIVIL 3D,EAGLE POINT and extra and most
of these companies obtain this technology through purchasing the software’s ,hiring expertise or
by downloading from internet and its usually operated by office engineers, project managers and
general managers.

Furthermore, we have also observed that the technology’s they use are limited due to different
grounds.

4 Discussion Regarding Merits and Challenges Faced using ICT

Technology.
The construction industry is notorious for its reluctant approach to new technologies. ICT
awareness should be created and directed toward organizations within the built environment to
inform and better integrate construction project contributors. Given that ICT changes rapidly, it is
in the best interest of construction organizations to implement current ICT systems and devise a
management plan for future updates. In the report need to improve the image of construction by
adopting high-tech, methods that facilitate project communication. The following discussion
demonstrates some merits and challenges faced to apply ICT technologies for planning, designing
and construction purposes in our country.
4.1 MERITS
▪ Improves the performance of construction process in terms of cost, time, and quality
and client’s satisfaction.
▪ Enable cooperation, coordination, and collaboration level.
▪ Change in design can be made efficiently.
▪ Works as catalyst in development process.
▪ Lower financial risk.
▪ It helps completing the project in estimated time and budget.
▪ Effective communication between project participants.
▪ Group decision making is made easier.
▪ Possibility of error is minimized.
▪ Information flow is accurate.

4.2 CHALLENGES IN OUR COUNTRY

Successful implementation of ICT is not as easier as it is thought of. Mainly developing
countries like our country Ethiopia face more challenges for the use of ICT in the construction.
Some of the major ongoing challenges are as follows:
• Our society is not sufficiently exposed to IT and its benefit.
• Government is expected to lower the tariff on IT tools.
• New technology demand new skills set and training. So, there is need of qualified and
skilled IT professional in the country.

5 CONCLUSION
Despite the emerging progress, access to ICT technology and services remains limited in many
parts of the country, particularly in rural areas. This can be attributed to a lack of infrastructure,
limited financial resources, and a shortage of skilled personnel. In terms of the construction
planning and designing process, it is likely that a range of ICT technologies is being used in
Ethiopia. These may include computer-aided design (CAD) software, civil 3d, inroads, project
management tools, and building information modeling (BIM) systems such as ETABS AND SAP.

Overall, while Ethiopia has made progress in developing its ICT infrastructure, there are still
significant challenges to overcome in expanding access and adoption of these technologies across
the country.
