PULSE WIDTH DEMODULATOR

Objective:
 To understand and get familiar with the operation of Pulse-Width Demodulator

Tools:

 MATLAB
 Laptop / PC
Theory:
In this lab firstly we have to understand and learn the working and function of pulse width
demodulator. Pulse width demodulator is completely opposite to PWM in PWM we can encode
an audio signal and in pulse width demodulator we can decode the receive signal. That’s why we
can use pulse width demodulator. Different methods are used to demodulate any signal.

Method: 1
In this method of converting signals is firstly we convert the PWM signal Pulse amplitude
modulation signal and their output signal is passes to any low pass filter but this method is less
common. After that PWM signal is given to integrator and hold circuit and their shows ramp
signal when their positive edge appears.

Then, this signal is added with sequence of synchronous pulses. And obtained resultant
waveform which is basically a sum of constant amplitude and constant WPG by the
demodulator.

After that we have to cut-off the portion of signal this is only exist when we pass the signal into
clipping circuit. Then the PAM signal is again passes through low pass filter to obtain modulated
signal.

Method: 2nd
In this method we demodulate PWM signal using the product of carrier signal and PWM. The
length of both signals is same but their magnitude is different.

The PWM are carrier signal are given to the input at a time as a sum, as a result the inverse
magnitude pulses are generated. At the end the signals are passed through low pass filter and
take output.

Conclusion:
In this lab we understand the operation of pulse width demodulation. And also understand IC-
MC1496 and their pin configuration. We completely learn the PWM and pulse width
demodulation and their working theoretically because the IC-MC1496 is not available in
software. We study 2 methods of generating PWM and demodulation signal and see their
generated waveforms and also understand the schematic diagram.
