Accomplishment Report in the Implementation of Project REAL

(Reading Enhancement Activities for Learners)
School Year 2020-2021

I. Introduction
Project REAL (Reading Enhancement Activities for Learners) aims
to make our learners more receptive and proficient in reading. It also seeks to
reduce or totally eliminate non- readers. This project REAL anchored with the
DepEd project 3B’S (Bawat Bata Bumabasa).
In a move to bridge literacy gaps among learners, the Department of
Education (DepEd) is intensifying its campaign on reading proficiency with the
unveiling of Hamon: Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs. With previous national
assessments revealing that learners still need improvement in literacy skills,
DepEd’s 3Bs initiative encourages offices from central to division level and
schools to intensify their advocacies for reading to make every learner a
reader at their grade level and capacitate teachers to become effective
reading instructors, according to DepEd Memorandum No. 173, s2019.
Anchored on a number of researches, the 3Bs initiative is grounded on the
needs of the learners and will develop succeeding interventions for them to
acquire reading and comprehension skills.
Project “REAL” is a yearlong, high-interest, teacher friendly,
learner- involving tool that teaches reading and language skills. Pupils work
with a single high- interest passage each week, encouraging the rereading for
details that is so necessary for fluency development. This enable the learners
to be more active and participative in different reading activities intensified by
our teachers which are very beneficial to the reading development of learners.

II. Implementation

Grade one teachers conducted reading pre- assessment via video

call, online reading assessment and home visitation to our 79 Grade one
pupils (oral) both Filipino/ English to assess their reading standing from
October, 2020 – January, 2021 to intensify the suitable reading intervention
suited to our learners who are belongs to learner’s at risk/ non-readers. Due
to the months of pandemic pupils ability and learnings become stagnant.
Assessment after, our principal, Mrs. Milagros C. Calingasan assigned each
teachers a group of pupils to hold an intervention and reading tutorial to the
chosen pupils. To the different reading activities administered by the BRSES
teachers anchored to our reading Project REAL Reading Enhancement
Activities for Learners.)
All teachers of Balete Relocation Site Elementary School conducted
reading assessment with the use of reading assessment tool, to determine the
reading readiness and reading level of learners. Monitoring assessment and
processes last from February, 2021-May, 2021. Our school launched project
REAL for those pupils who evaluated as non- readers and slow readers.
Since Grade one is the foundation of reading, we focused our project in the
same grade.
Beginning readers and pupil’s at risk the following practices implemented.
1. REAL “ Project (Reading Enhancement Activities for Learners

OBJECTIVES:

 To identify the strength and weaknesses of pupils in reading

through the administration of diagnostic instruments
 To lessen the number of non-readers or pupils at risk in grade 1
 To employ direct phonetic awareness training
 To establish accuracy and fluency in beginning reading skills.
 To strengthen the teachers’ skill in communication so that the
quality of teaching reading will be improved.

III. Monitoring and Evaluation

After almost six months of execution of the Program, assessment test

were given to measures the effectiveness of the program as well as the
improvement of the learners.Thereafter implementing varied activities and
series of reading tutorial/instruction with the faculty members, partners and
other stake holders mid- assessment and post assessment was conducted to
measure the development of reading skills of our learners.
IV. Impact
After almost 6 months of reading program implementation the
learner’s performance in reading comparatively improving. Most of them
actively participated in the written and online discussion.
Of all the effort and helped of the BRSES teachers we can be able to
conquer the problem/ challenges encountered in reading amidst pandemic.
Through the result of Project REAL assessment it really showed that we
find “SUCCESS”. The importance of reading for children cannot be
underestimated. Reading for pleasure can benefit a child’s education, social
and cognitive development, their well -being, and of course in their mental
health. As of now we are still on- going process of reading activities so as to
totally swipe up non-readers.

V. Sustainability
There is a need to continuously implement the project REAL in all
grade levels with the help and guidance of their advisers to aid the learners
attain reading proficiency and improve reading level so as their reading
comprehension.
