Comparative study of Mrs Pearson
& Mrs Fitzgerald
In the play Mother's Day by J. B. Priestley, Mrs. Pearson and Mrs.
Fitzgerald are two contrasting characters who highlight the different
roles and experiences of women in the early 20th century.
Mrs. Pearson is portrayed as a mother and wife who is somewhat
marginalized within her family. She is not given the respect and
attention she deserves, and her opinions are often dismissed by her
husband and children. She works hard to keep her family together
and is frequently interrupted when she speaks. However, she
remains strong and resilient, continuing to love and care for her
family despite their lack of appreciation.
On the other hand, Mrs. Fitzgerald is portrayed as a successful
businesswoman who has achieved a high status in society. She is
confident, assertive, and unapologetic in her pursuit of success. She
has a sharp wit and is not afraid to speak her mind, often challenging
the opinions of others. However, her success has come at a cost, as
she has sacrificed her family life and has few meaningful
relationships outside of her work.
While both Mrs. Pearson and Mrs. Fitzgerald are women, their
experiences and roles in society are vastly different. Mrs. Pearson is
a traditional wife and mother, while Mrs. Fitzgerald is a successful
businesswoman who defies gender expectations. However, both
women face their own challenges and struggles, whether it is the
lack of recognition from their family or the sacrifices they have made
for their respective careers.
In conclusion, the characters of Mrs. Pearson and Mrs. Fitzgerald in
Mother's Day provide a comparative study of the different roles and
experiences of women in the early 20th century. Through these two
contrasting characters, Priestley highlights the challenges and
struggles faced by women in society, whether they are traditional
wives and mothers or successful businesswomen.
