Senior Womens Basketball Report Season 2010/2011

The season started off with about 40 people turning up to attend a Player Registration Night at the Riverton Hotel. This was held 5 weeks prior to the season commencement. We discussed the year's competition and got the registrations forms from all teams registering for the season. We then went through a list of jobs that needed people to volunteer to take on which were all covered on the evening. Teams were then given the run through of how the season would follow, times, paid umpires fee, and scoring. 10 teams signed up for the 2010/2011 competition 4 from Riverton, 2 from Manoora, 3 from Marrabel and 1 team called 'Storm' made up from the cancellation of the Tarlee Babes team. Teams played at 7pm and 8pm inside and and outside and one at 9pm inside. We used paid local umpires at $15 a match which was covered by the $195 per team umpires fee. Each team also had to supply a scorer for their game each night. Midway through the season the 10 teams split into an A and B grade competition depneding on their position on the ladder. There was 8 teams in the A grade competition and 4 in the B grade competition this meant more sides had a opportunity to play finals. The split was messy according to some teams and in the future we will re think how we split the teams. The season ran really smoothly with teams enjoying the lessened responsibilities of scoring before or after their game and also not having to umpire, umpire unless they put their name down to do so. The quality of the games was highly improved from past seasons as having confident and experienced umpires meant the game was kept clean and with far less fouls. Many players commented on the quality of the games now being played. On the downside chasing money for subs and umpires fees was a long and dismal process this season. Many players having registered and then ending up not playing after the first two or three weeks meant chasing subs was a huge effort, as well as keeping track of who had paid and how much. This is another area which needs to be readdressed before this season. Another area of concern was the amount of forfeits two teams in particular had. I also noticed the difficulty in which some teams had finding fill ins as we had so many players and teams this year. Pink Ribbon round was held again this season and we were rained out once for our scheduled match at Manoora but rescheduled and held the bbq and fundraising at Riverton. The night was very successful and everyone enjoyed the social side to basketball that night. Finals were very tight in the A grade competition and not as tight in the b

grade as one of the top teams who forfetied a few to many times ended up playing b grade finals and having a huge win in the grand final. In the end two Riverton teams took out the A and B Grade grand final. Riverton Pink won the A grade and Riverton White the B grade. Our best and fairest winner was Hannah Clark from Riverton White and our Runner up Simone Miller from Marrabel Black. Thank you to Simone Hier who was the umpire co-ordinator, Gayle Teague the score recorder, Ann Willmott who organised the games roster, Katie I'anson who was secretary and Leanne Griffiths who was treasurer and a very good helper to me in leading me in the right direction for my first year in charge. Over all a very enjoyable season!! Rachael McInerney
