UNITS 3+4: EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT &

FOOD AND DRINK


WARM UP:

- Divide all students into 3 or 4 teams.

- Each team will choose a specific slogan and write it on the board. The team having the
most interesting slogan and presentation of it will win this round.

GAME 1: Guess the synonyms

- university education => higher education, tertiary education, third-level education,


post-secondary education

- primary education => elementary education

- public school => state school

- academic performance => academic achievement

- knowledgeable => well-informed

- colleagues => co-workers, workmates

- work together with => cooperate with, collaborate with

- hard-working => industrious, diligent

- job opportunities => employment opportunities

- salary => income, pay, wage

Note: The host will read out loud a word / phrase and each team has to write down its
synonym(s) quickly

GAME 2: Guess the word

- the act of using, eating, or drinking something (noun) => consumption

- a person who does not eat meat (noun) => vegetarian

- the fact of being extremely fat, in a way that is dangerous for health (noun) => obesity

- a disease in which the body cannot control the level of sugar in the blood (noun) =>


diabetes

- an amount of money paid to the government, usually a percentage of personal income or


of the cost of goods or services bought (noun) => tax

- not good for your health (adjective) => unhealthy

- containing sugar (adjective) => sugary

- not containing sugar and usually containing an artificial sweetener instead (adjective)


=> sugar-free

Note: The host will read out loud the definition of a word, and each team has to write
down the word quickly.

PRESENTATION / DEBATE:

TOPIC: SUGARY FOODS AND DRINKS

Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes
many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage
people to consume less sugar.

Note:

 Each team will choose their own view, having 3 minutes to prepare together with 4
minutes to present, and other teams are allowed to ask a question related to the
presentation later
 Mark each team’s performance according to 4 criteria: pronunciation, fluency,
grammar and vocabulary
