SOCIAL CONFORMITY: OBEDIENCE TO MAJORITY OR AUTHORITY

INTRO:

When we say social conformity, it is a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behaviour in
order to fit in with a group. (Humans have a common tendency to adopt the opinions and follow the
behaviours of the majority). So with this, our group decided to experiment on whether a person would
be affected or influenced by the majority or authority or not all. Obedience to authority, It is the act of
changing one's conduct in order to comply with a request made by a higher authority (People typically
comply with demands because they worry about the consequences of not doing so) on the other hand,
another factor by which a person's judgment can be influenced is the group majority. In order to satisfy
our two fundamental needs: the need for an accurate sense of reality and the need for social
acceptance, Individuals give in to peer pressure as they rely on the group.

BACKGROUND:

This experiment is a product of ASCH Experiment and MILGRAM Experiment. In Asch, The experiments
revealed the degree to which a person's own opinions are influenced by those of a group. Asch found
that people were willing to ignore reality and give an incorrect answer in order to conform to the rest of
the group while in Milgram, an authority figure ordered participants to deliver what they believed were
dangerous electrical shocks to another person. These results suggested that people are highly influenced
by authority, and highly obedient.
