Chapter 6: Gender and Families

Chapter Context
The evolution of the family stems from the relationship to economic systems and ideologies
of the family that glorified the home as women’s place. Feminism emphasizes structural
diversity in class, race, and gender arrangements. Many social problems result from gender
relations that shape such problems as family violence, teen pregnancy, and the affordability
of childcare.

Research Assignments
The following research assignments pertain to the main topics and/or themes of the
chapter. Please respond by writing a paper consisting of 1000-1500 words.

The Fantasy Wedding

Research the economics of weddings by looking for data citing the average cost of weddings
in the United States. Then apply symbolic interaction theory to wedding magazines by
selecting one magazine and analyzing its contents. Connect your research on the cost of a
wedding to the symbolic displays of wealth in the images. Illustrate the ways the images
present a socially constructed view of wedding and married life.

Researching Parental Leave

To further understand the U.S. policies of parental leave, do some research on the history of
the U.S. Family and Medical Leave Act and the parental leave policies in France, Norway,
and Japan. Be sure to study both maternal and paternal leave policies. How does the
United States compare to these countries? What does this tell you about the value of work
in these countries versus in the United States? What about the value of families and raising
children? What would you propose the United States do to change its parental leave policy?
