Philosophy
Topic Note
• We want to present as many looks as possible
• Force our opponent to spend practice time preparing for us.
Be Multiple
Create a major burden for them.
• They should spend more time on us than anyone they play.
• Strategically & tactically, we want to be more creative, more
Be Different
intelligent, than anyone we face.
• We want to force our opponent to make decisions before &
after the snap.
To Disguise
• Never allowing them to just line up & tee off on us.
• Line up one way, then attack another way
• It took 1/3 of the US Calvary (Approx. 5,000 soldiers) to force
GERONIMO and his 34 warriors to surrender.
• This is because he didn't’t fight like his opponent.
Attack & • He was “offensive” on defense.
Attack • He inflicted his enemy with fear…
• He planned, manipulated the enemy, took advantage of
opportunities, his warriors executed his strategy with
discipline, and they attacked…BRUTALLY.
Philosophy
Topic Note
• We are an attack, gap control defense.
• All defensive linemen are responsible for one gap that is
predetermined by the huddle call.
Gap Control • We will line up pre-snap & play great technique by attacking the
Off. Linemen/TE, or we will slant to our gap responsibility using
our quickness to offset our opponent.
• All linebackers are two gap players depending on flow
• Our goal is always to out play the other teams defense.
Points Allowed • While stats do give you an indication of how your defense is
playing, the only stat that we are concerned with is points allowed.
• It is imperative that the defense gives the ball to the offense on
turnovers as much as possible.
Create
• On average, each team will have 12 offensive possessions per
Turnovers
game. If we can take it away on three of those possessions, we
have eliminated their scoring opportunities by 25%.
• You don’t always have to have highly talented athletes to play
defense.
• The one thing that you must possess is a great desire to get to the
Effort
ball.
• Effort and Swarming Players is something that we stress & practice
daily.
STRENGTH CALLS
Setting Defensive Strength
1. To the TE 80% of the time
2. To the wide side of the field or boundary. (based on
opponent tendencies)
3. To Strong receiver side
4. We can also use a “check with me” system based on
opponents offensive formation.
5. If the offensive formation is balanced in the middle of
the field, we will declare strong side to our left.
(because most teams are right handed)
MIKE LB – Gives strength call “Lucky” of “Ringo”
SAFETIES – Give DB strength call “Rip” or Liz”
Defensive Strength
TE to the Left = Mike LB “LUCKY” TE to the Right= Mike LB “RINGO”
