Should we speak
more about this?
TEACHER'S ADVICE
LEAD-IN + PRE-WATCHING

1
First of all, make sure your students know what social issues is. Continue the sentences together in order to make a definition.
Only then brainstorm as many social issues and social topics as they can. If it’s a group lesson, divide them into pairs - discussion with a
limit of time.
Students unjumble the title - The hidden victims of domestic violence. Here you can revise word order (extra). Discuss students'
predictions in pairs/groups and also the importance of such topics to be raised and spoken out.

PRE-TEACHING VOCAB + WATCHING

2
Before watching you can brainstorm types of crime/topic vocab that can be used while discussing such topics and then look through
flashcards. Students read the word and try to explain it before revealing the opposite side with the meaning. Do the task 'flashcards'.
Watch the first part and discuss the real story - what happened? what could have caused it? could it be prevented and how? Discuss how
people usually treat it and what's wrong with it, what can be changed. Watch the next part and compare.

VOCABULARY FOCUS

3
Choose 'learning' and ask students to do the task individually. Draw their attention to pronunciation of difficult words. You can do
choral drilling. Fill in the gaps with 1 word from the box. If necessary, students can fill in the gaps and then watch the video again - find
the phrases and what is missing. Not all phrases are from the video - discuss who said them and in which context? what wasn't used in
the video. Then students make up sentences with odd words.
Answers: 1. manslaughter; 2/ convicted, assault, sentenced ; 3. Conviction; 4. inquest; 5. Witness

GRAMMAR FOCUS
4 Past simple + past perfect in one context. Make sure students have already learnt 2 tense
forms - analyse the sentence from the video - why these tense forms are together in 1
sentence and when do we combine them? Revise how to form each tense form separately
before practice.
If necessary, add other past forms and practice them as well.
TEACHER'S ADVICE
SPEAKING

5
students are divided into pairs/mini-groups for a discussion or you can organise a mingle activity - students discuss
questions with a limit of time 2-3 minutes - then they change partners. Change partners for a few times, The aim is to
make notes and gather as many opinions as it's possible. Then do the summary together.
Also discuss what a person can do if they feel any domestic abuse or violence - where and who they can address to etc.

CONSOLIDATIONS

6
ask students to do the test in quizlet before the next task
Alternative - students name the word and explain it using their own words, Another student makes an
example with it

FREER PRACTICE

7
Students make their own poster about domestic violence using vocabulary of the lesson. Before creating, you
can look at the example of the poster and discuss it.
Alternative - poster can be given for homework if you need to practice grammar more, then stop with answering
the questions. Explain how to create a poster at home. They can use also Canva or any other editor/app.

HOMEWORK
8 Another poster or presentation about any social issue from the first
