CVS 545: WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING II (3 Units)

Course contents
Introduction to engineering economy in water resources and water resources planning
techniques. The design of integrated water resources systems such as drought management, river
navigation, drainage systems, spill ways and outlet works, recreational use of water. Integrated
water resources planning and management in arid semi-arid areas. Design of water harvesting
works. Erosion control: principles, erosion control works, constructions in small waterways. Sea
water intrusion: salt wedge in estuaries, penetration in aquifers, effects of excessive mining of
groundwater. Introduction to the design and construction of dams and related water structures:
weirs, sluices, embankments. Introduction to river engineering training and river training works,
such as the application of groins parallel and perpendicular to the flow in rivers and the use of
gabions.
Fieldwork: study to erosion control works in a river catchment area and in a specific
watercourse.
