Experiment No. 2:
Title: Calculate “Basic Time” and “Standard Time” for a given activity (Fan Assembly and
Disassembly) and find the “Rating” of the worker.
Objective:
• To determine the Average Rating of worker
• To compare the two methods in terms of the time-study method.
• To study the importance of the work-study method.
• To measure the time required to do the job for a qualified worker and hence to establish
the standard time.
• To suggest a better alternative method to enhance productivity by having less standard
time.

Problem statement:
In industrial engineering, the main objective is to enhance productivity. It demands a higher
production rate with better product quality. For this purpose, the work-study is done. The work
study is further conducted in two parts, time study and motion study. The time study method
evaluates how long it takes on average for an employee to complete a given task. This time study
is different for the same task performed by different methods. The best method is the one that is
done safely with a higher accuracy rate.

Safety Precautions:
• Wear safety gloves to protect yourself from the sharp edges of a screwdriver.
• Place the apparatus in the middle of the table to eliminate the risk of falling the apparatus
on your feet.
• Wear covered shoes as advised during lab performance.
• Assemble or disassemble the apparatus carefully so that your finger may not get hurt.

Procedure:
• After taking account of safety precautions place the fan apparatus in front of yourself on
the table.
• Start the stopwatch once you are ready to perform.
• It’s your choice either to perform assembly first or the disassembly method.
• Pick up the parts one by one from the table and assemble them all in a complete manner.
Make sure you follow a sequence while doing the task to improve your rating.
• Measure the time taken in completing the task. This will be your observed time.
• Repeat the experiment for the rest of your group mates.
• Follow the reverse procedure for doing the disassembly method.

Comments and suggestions:

This experiment is the practical application of the time-study method and describes the importance
of the work-study method in Industrial engineering. The calculation of normal and standard time
has been understood by performing this experiment. The fan assembly and disassembly were two
methods and the observations show that the standard time for disassembling is less than assembling
a fan. In the time-study method, we describe which method takes less time and why is it so. In this
case, the assembly of a fan is time taking because it takes picking up parts one by one from the
table. While the disassembly is a simple task as all the parts are already in the performer’s hand.

There must be a stand-like object having boxes for each part specifically in front of the performer
so that the performer feels well to pick up each part from the table stand.
