other visuals by discussing in pairs each of the 6 pictures in Activity 1 in terms of an obstacle
course.

2. Pupils can discuss in pairs each of the 6 pictures in Activity 1 in terms of an obstacle course.
ACTIVITIES
1. The phrase ‘obstacle course’ is written on the whiteboard together with its definition, ‘a course over
rough land where participants must run and overcome obstacles by climbing, crawling under or
crossing them by ropes’ and pupils discuss what they know about ‘obstacle course’ as a class.
PRE-LESSON 2. Pupils are told the school is going to create a short outdoor obstacle course to help pupils exercise
during physical education lessons.
3. Pupils work in pairs to design a challenging assault course that will help pupils keep fit.
4. A few pairs share their discussion with the class.
5. Pupils turn to page 38 English Download and read the instructions and the words in the orange box in
Activity 1.
6. Pupils discuss in pairs each of the 6 pictures in Activity 1 in terms of an obstacle course i.e. how can
they use a brick wall in an obstacle course? What do pupils have to do? How will the activity improve
pupil’s fitness? Will it test anything else such as a pupil’s ability to rationalise? Did they include any of
the ideas in the pictures in their own design of an obstacle course? (Complementary Skill)
7. Pupils label 6 pictures with 6 words in the orange box.
8. Pupils read the 4 questions in Activity 3 and identify the most important words and later compare
with their partner whether they underlined the same words.
LESSON DEVELOPMENT 9. Pupils discuss the answers as a class.
10. Pupils go on to Activity 3 and read the instructions and the questions again.
11. Pupils listen to a recording of a short radio report.
12. Pupils answer 4 MCQ questions.(Main Skill)
13. Pupils compare their answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
Differentiated Actvities:
Less proficient pupils: Grouped into smaller groups and listen to the audio text more often, pausing more
times to allow pupils to discuss the information they have heard in pairs.
More proficient pupils: Provide extra multiple-choice questions and refer to audio tape script (p140,
Teacher’s Book) to create further multiple–choice questions similar to the one in Activity 3 Student’s Book.
14. Pupils review their learning in this lesson by working in pairs to discuss the Spartan race. Would they
like to enter such a race? Why?/Why not? What is a Spartan race testing? What characteristics does a

15. A few pairs share their discussion with the class.
