ACTIVITIES
1. Pupils turn to their textbook page 155 and work in pairs to discuss 4 questions in Activity 1.
PRE-LESSON
2. A few pairs share their discussion with the class.
3. Pupils read the 4 sentences in Activity 2 and fill in the gaps in the sentences with what they might say
if they don’t hear or don’t understand what someone says.
4. Pupils check their answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
5. Pupils read the Download box and the phrases in the Language Bank.
6. Pupils read the instructions and the mindmap that outlines 5 possible ideas to keep a youth centre
open.
7. Pupils work in pairs to discuss how effective each idea would be and then decide which 2 ideas they
would put into practice.
LESSON DEVELOPMENT 8. Pupils imagine they are going to present their ideas to a committee from the local council.
9. Using formal register, pupils take turns to explain the main points of the 2 ideas that they have
chosen regarding keeping the youth centre open to committee members who will be the rest of the
class.(Main Skill and Complementary Skill)
10. Pupils listen to teacher’s feedback after all the pairs have their turns.
Differentiated Activities:
Less proficient pupils: Provide cards with the appropriate language such as ‘we believe that…’, ‘It is
important that...’, ‘Not only that but…’ so they can use these in their dialogue.
More proficient pupils:
11. Pupils review their learning in this lesson by completing an exit card about the speaking activities:
‘what they were able to do well in the activities?’ and ‘what they found particularly challenging about
