ACTIVITIES
1. Pupils discuss in pairs discuss the features of formal letters are and then what makes communication
effective. (Features of formal letters include: in top left corner the name and address of the person
writing to, the date, Dear + Mr/Mrs/Ms + surname or full name, an opening sentence clearly stating

the reason(s) for writing, a formal tone throughout, a clear purpose, the desired course of action
stated at the end, an ending with Yours sincerely/faithfully).
2. A few pairs share their discussion with the class, with a list written on the whiteboard.
LESSON DEVELOPMENT 3. Pupils turn to page 156 and read the information on letters and communicating effectively.
4. Pupils read 2 extracts in Activity 1 and state which one is written in the right tone and is most likely to
get a good reaction. (Main Skill)
5. Pupils compare their answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
6. Pupils read another extract in Activity 2 and suggest a solution and how it would help.
7. Pupils compare their answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
8. Pupils read the writing task about how many elderly people in the local nursing home are suffering
from depression caused by boredom and loneliness in Activity 3 and discuss as a class what could be
done and why it would help. (Complementary Skill)
9. Pupils read a letter in Activity 4 that was written in response to the task in Activity 3 and discuss as a
class whether they think it is a good letter and justify their opinion.
10. Pupils answer 4 comprehension questions about the letter in Activity 4. (Main Skill)
11. Pupils compare their answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
